1/ Recently I ordered filter coffee from VS Mani & Co. β˜•

The coffee was good, but the copy was better πŸ‘€

Curious, I made myself a cuppa coffee and dug deeper 🧐

Was amazed by what I found! Photo from VS Mani's Insta page
2/ Turns out that VS Mani was a pandemic pet project of @gd_vsmani!

He was a Vice President at an advertising agency.. by day.

He'd wake up by 5 AM 😱

Pack all the orders πŸ“¦

And THEN head to his day job (!!!)

He'd then ship products during his lunch breaks πŸš€

Respect πŸ™‡β€β™€οΈ
3/ Now, two years post launch, the South Indian D2C brand VS Mani raised $370,000 in an angel round.

That's over β‚Ή2.5 crore?! 😱

That's insane money for a side hustle that started as a pandemic pet project!

Source: livemint.com/companies/star…
4/ But I found something even more suprising when I looked at the list of "angels" in VS Mani's angel round πŸ‘Ό

One of the angels is actor-producer Rana Daggubati 😱

Y'know the the antagonist in Bahubali?!

Sure doesn't look like an angel to me πŸ₯΅
5/Right now VS Mani is running a Black Friday sale with a buy-one-get-one-free offer

I've (re)ordered their:

β˜• filter coffee decoction (80:20::coffee:chicory)

β˜•'instant' coffee filter powder (60:40::coffee:chicory)

You can buy 'em here: vsmani.com #notsponsored

1/ Bangalore has 70+ microbreweries 🍻

Each day, each brewery uses 200 kg of grain/day

That's ~14,000 kg of grain going waste.

PER DAY 😱

So Bangalore based food researcher cum chef @elizabethyorke started @SavingGrains.

@SavingGrains upcycles spent grain to good flour
2/ This isn't new.

In the good ol' days, brewers & bakers used to work v closely together 🀝

That's because bread n' brews use the same building blocks:

🌾Grain
🍚Yeast
πŸ’§Water

Bread became brew 🍻

While spent grain became bread (anew) πŸ₯

And the circular cycle continued πŸ”
3/ I've tried @SavingGrains':

🍞 Brewer's bread
πŸ₯£ Good granola
πŸͺ Gooey chocolate cookie
🌾Spent wheat crackers
🍘Besan laddoos

They all had a slight malt-y aftertaste.

Of all the things I've tried, their granola was the best. Full of almonds & seeds.

VERY filling.

Pink Bengaluru szn 🌸
Why are we Bangaloreans so besotted with the tabebuia rosea tree? πŸ€”

In the tabebuia rosea tree, all the green leaves fall off πŸ‚

So the contrast between it's 🌸 pink blooms 🌸 and the sky is far more visible

So it's more aesthetic vs other trees whose leaves don't fall🌲
Where can you spot these pink trees?

Go to Cubbon Park

Then head to the State Library

You'll see several pink trees in FULL bloom 🌸

1/ Finally, went to Nerlu CafΓ© today!

The coffee cupping experience was pretty interesting! πŸ€”

They let you pick 3 black coffees, and you're supposed to guess the "notes" in the coffee.

As a coffee n00b, I found it v hard πŸ˜…

Might be worth it if you're a coffee connoisseur 🧐 ImageImage
2/ Nerlu Cafe has a range of v reasonably priced food.

Lots of sandwiches!

They also have scones with cream cheese & blueberry jam!

I've always wanted to try them after reading Enid Blyton books.

Thought they'd taste like Variar puffs. But they're more dense like shortbread. ImageImageImageImage
3/ More than Nerlu's coffee/food tho, what I'll keep going back for is the ambience.

Nerlu means shade in Kannada.

I LOVED the "komorebi" effect they've managed to create. V industrial chic.

The cafΓ© was so green! They also have al fresco seating.

Perf place to work out of! ImageImage

1/ Veryyy excited for the Craft Cocoa & Chocolate Festival happening in Bangalore this week! 🍫

Here's a line up of the sessions & workshops I'm looking forward to the most πŸ‘‡πŸΎ
2/ Tomo there's a cocoa ceremony happening during the full πŸŒ•

Participants are given ceremonial grade drinking 🍫

As per the @hubermanlab podcast, chocolate releases 1.5x dopamine.

Allegedly, it also "opens" your 3rd eye πŸ‘€

This is followed by a sound bath for good 'vibes'πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Pic from BeAnimal's Insta post
3/ On Sunday, there is an artisinal cheese cheese + craft chocolate pairing experience.

The artisinal πŸ§€ is by the B'lore based brand Nari & Kāge

I've been really looking fwd to try N&K's πŸ§€

Esp after they collab-ed with a Michelin star chef last week at The Courtyard πŸ‘€ Pic from Nari & Kage's insta handle

1/Paneer and pav. Two Portuguese inventions I am very grateful for. Little did I know that I also had to thank the Portuguese for the Alphonso aam as well.

Curious about how the πŸ₯ revered by the aam aadmi came to have a Caucasian name I researched a bit. Here is what I found!πŸ‘‡
2/When the Portuguese first landed in India mangoes were a little bit..sucky. That is to say, Indians used to devour them by sucking their pulp.

These mushy mangos, while delicious, were hard to transport back home. The emperor demanded πŸ₯s that were easier for European exports.
3/ Portuguese priests who had settled in Goa then started experimenting with indigenous mangoes. This resulted in the origin of the world-famous Goan grafts of mangos.

They then sowed the seeds (quite literally) for the Alphonso aam that we all love.
