124.02/ Shabbat was wonderful but incredibly rainy. We got to daven mincha & maariv on Sat. afternoon/night at the famed "Shteibelach" minyan factory. Tried again this AM but shacharit in the 6 o'clock hour is not as "factory-ish" as I was led to believe. So we went one block up
124.03/ We're leaving back to America imminently. It was way too short a trip, and the days were short as well. I didn't get to see so many of my friends and I apologize for that. I'll try to make it up next time (suggested bribe: shawarma)
124.04/ One surprise of this trip was discovering that Cheshvan/Kislev is snail season in Jerusalem. There were so. Many. Snails.
Luckily we were in The German Colony and not the French, eh?
124.05/ We came back to the USA last night. My soundtrack this morning were the songs of my birthplace:
Steve Miller
James Brown
& in honor of my favorite secular holiday (which I missed)
124.07/ Barukh Dayan Ha-Emet for the loss of Christine McVie. Playing all of "Rumours" in her memory. And my daughter (sick & home from school) is honoring me by not mentioning how every song has been misused in some Big Pharma commercial.
124.08/ Ah, wearing a mask in sub-freezing temperatures, how I will not miss thee.
BTW fogged glasses, at my age and eyesight, is a serious health threat. Nothing compared to dying of COVID, but I'd rather not, ya know, fall down a flight of stairs.
124.09/ This trip to Israel was Jerusalem centered for me & my kids (my wife gave a guest lecture in Bar Ilan). I took them to my old quotidian haunts, like the shuk - which could be one of my favorite places on Earth in it's loud, crowded & stinky glory. jewishlink.news/features/55185…
Of course, I've shown the family this movie before - I'm no monster - but it's been too long & the kids are forgetting the lines, and that can't be. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Night_a…
122.03/ The first #MotzeiShabbatMovieNight of 5783 is the classic grim crime thriller "Batman"... actually, sorry, it's the camp classic "Batman (1966)". Why? Because it's referenced so often by later comedies & it's part of their education, of course. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_(1…
120.03/ Spot on. I used to get a DD kosher egg-white, fakin'-bacon & cheese on a bagel as a Sunday treat and I so wanted it to be good... but my dreams were dashed on this reality:
