Elon does have a bit of a Trump thing in that he thinks he will be able to use media and his own dissembling to talk his way out of his debt. (Which Trump did very effectively in the 80s and 90s.) Regulators have not disabused him of this.
The SEC has slapped him on the wrist several times and he likes it, keeps goading them.
I assume what brings him down if it happens is not govt oversight
It’ll be banks determining that his monkeying with TSLA stock is not acceptable and his debt holders determining that he’s so toxic that they can’t repackage and sell his debt

Btw for right wingers who haven’t googled me and don’t know I’m a former equity analyst who has written extensively about finance and are like ooooooh are you gonna write about how Elon triggered you snowflake feminazi? Nope!
Buckle up, Nazis!
There are plenty of interpersonally repulsive people who are good fiduciaries. Elon isn’t one of them.

If you want a civil community, tone setting matters as much as moderation. Elon has amplified and agreed with white supremacists and anti-semites in public on this website. He is setting a tone that they are legitimate and correct.
No amount of moderation from people who disagree with him who are lower in the company matters if he doesn’t set an example.
Also: I hope twitter doesn’t die. It’s a writer’s platform, for better or worse and I like that about it. But I’ve also been through a lot of platforms as an early adopter of these things.

There’s a kind of condescension toward womens’ mags that’s deeply gross. (Sorry, Ben. You’re the example today because you should know better.) Any time a big large circ magazine writes about a rich and powerful person everything gets fact checked and lawyered
And it doesn’t matter if it’s a women’s mag or The New Yorker. Newspapers don’t work the same way, but that’s a different ball of wax.
Nonetheless, if Vogue does an article on domestic abuse where the perp is a billionaire, bet your ass that thing is fact checked several times and heavily lawyered

Just a sociopath, honestly. She also said that when she cried about the death of their child, he got angry and accused her of being emotionally manipulative.
I once had a guy accuse me of that when I godforbid had an emotional moment re: something horrible that was happening and he was angry because in his own words, his attraction to me was that I was “stoic” and he couldn’t fathom that I was just upset, because he couldn’t relate.
I’m sure it devastated Musk if he has any feelings in there. But the fact that he’s lying about it now to score points is just disgusting.

Re: crime in NYC - this is obviously anecdotal because I am one person and not a, like, data set. But in my 22 years of living here I know two people who got mugged, and one whose house got broken into. Nobody who died or got shot. Among millions of people.
Growing up in small town AL, I knew three kids whose siblings or parents died from gun violence. People’s houses get broken into with an alarming frequency (at least according to my parents). One of my brothers had audio equipment stolen three times.
I would wager crime (violent crime especially) is a much bigger problem in places where people are isolated and don’t need to live with people who are not like them on a daily basis. They trust others less as a result.

List of perverse things i’m thankful for this Thanksgiving: 1) between Elon and SBF, there’s undeniable public evidence that these people I’ve been saying are mediocrities for years are proving me right
2) “centrists are more persuadable” pundits were wrong and Dems over-performed in the midterms and now political consultant dudes I know who are boomers will finally stop sending me articles about the median voter (maybe)
3) Thankful that I can live without this site. (Mad for people who need it though.)
