🇪🇬Egypt is doing everything it can to bolster LNG exports to🇪🇺EU and collect additional revenues for its stranded domestic economy.
The targets are to maximise domestic production and rationalise consumption, hitting a new high in LNG exports for 2022.
At what costs?🧵
According to the🇪🇬Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla🇪🇬LNG exports will hit a new high of 8 mt/y in 2022.
This means +8% compared to 2021 as🇪🇬tries to gain from the hefty prices of LNG paid by🇪🇺countries.
This morning, TTF month-head is surging by nearly 5%
To maximise the🇪🇬exports towards🇪🇺will, Cairo is recalibrating the share of LNG towards🇪🇺whilst sending less to Asia.
In 2022, 🇪🇺countries will absorb 90% of deliveries, comapred with 80% in 2022.
In June,🇪🇬&🇪🇺Commission Presidents released a Joint Statement on energy cooperation
The🇪🇬🇪🇺bilateral cooperation focuses on several issues:
-Fostering sustainable development
-Combatting climate change and environmental degradation
-Ensuring energy security
-Facilitating a balanced and just green transition
During #COP27 🇪🇬🇪🇺signed an MoU on green hydrogen(🟢H2)
🟢H2 played a big part at COP27.
🇩🇪German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that🟢H2
"is happening now” with the🇩🇪government announcing a first tender for green ammonia and budget for import scheme of more than €4 billion.
He presented the idea in a roundtable with🇪🇬President El-Sisi
But the reality on the ground says that it is🇪🇬LNG that is gaining attention as an alternative to the imports of🇷🇺Russian gas.
Countries in🇪🇺EU are accelerating the deployment of new import infrastructures.🇩🇪has just inaugurated its first floating terminal euractiv.com/section/energy…
🇪🇬is a major gas producer and has done much during the last years to ramp up production and expand its reserve base.
Onshore and offshore fields attracted IOCs like🇮🇹ENI,🇬🇧BP and🇷🇺Rosneft.
This has been key to respond to the higher🇪🇬domestic demand:
- 2011 48bcm
- 2021 62bcm
+29%
But now🇪🇬is doing all it can to boost LNG exports from its 2 terminals.
In August, amid a🥵heatwave across the region, the government rationed electricity to save around 15% of natural gas used in⚡️power generation and increase LNG exports to generate foreign currency.
🇪🇬has suffered from an acute foreign currency shortage, worsened by🇷🇺invasion of🇺🇦Ukraine, high global commodity prices, the collapse of tourism from🇷🇺and🇺🇦 and the sky-high costs of borrowing.
In March-Aug. urban and core inflation accelerated to 13.1% and 13.7 %📈
Meanwhile...
the war is catapulting food prices to unsustainable levels. Wheat's cost has increased by 44%, sunflower oil by 32%📈
🇺🇦grain exports have resumed, but the🇷🇺🇺🇦deal is hanging by a thread.
With a growing population of over 106 million, a food crisis will bring pure chaos in🇪🇬
The energy crisis is not just a🇪🇺phenomenon.
Authorities in Brussels and🇪🇺capitals need to understand this before the energy crisis generates spinoff effects, bringing more and more political crises.
Urging our neighbours to export additional gas has costs, for us and for them.

🚨🇾🇪Yemen's Houthi are threatening to step up the attacks to all ships supplying goods to🇮🇱Israel, despite their nationality.
This is another risk for energy security in the Middle East, where distressing war signals come from Gaza as Israeli troops seized the Rafah crossing
🧵
The Houthi are expanding the action range of attacks to naval convoys as IDF troops have taken the Rafah crossing.
This happens while the Netanyhau government is now openly considering fully advancing and meeting Hamas militants in the area, massively overpopulated by Palestinian
refugees fleeing from other parts of Gaza.
As a response, the Houthis, which are the only faction of the so-called Axis of Resistance led by🇮🇷Iran that have declared war on Israel because of the invasion of Gaza, are threatening to include targeting ships heading to Israel
🚨🇮🇹Italy is still importing a lot of🇷🇺Russian gas.
Despite political announcements made and calls by🇪🇺EU authorities to zero the gas flows from Russia, in March Italy has imported almost three times the gas it was importing a year ago.
This gas transit through🇺🇦Ukraine
🧵
At first, I could not believe my eyes. But digging, data is revealing an unpleasant truth. Italy still relies on Russian gas more than what could appear.
In March, Italy imports from Austria ballooned year-on-year and month-on-month.
Given the nature of the European gas pipeline network, where Austria is a centrepiece of the East-to-West transit of Russian gas, almost the entirety of this gas is likely to have come from Russia, produced and exported by Gazprom through its long-term contracts with
🚨🇪🇨Ecuador is in a deep energy crisis.
The country is suffering from extended blackouts and the government has blocked the economy to avoid a grid collapse.
In a world full of tensions on markets, both climate change & political accountability are behind a new energy crisis.
🧵
A few days ago, the Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared an energy emergency with unprecedented measures undertaken to de facto paralyse the country's economy.
Last week, schools were suspended and all public and private sectors of the economy were halted to save energy.
What is even more concerning is that the government is likely headed towards a political crisis, with President Noboa replacing the former energy minister Andrea Arrobo with the current Transportation Minister Roberto Luque, named as an interim energy minister during this crisis.
🚨In the night,🇮🇱Israel has retaliated against🇮🇷Iran for the April 13th massive drone and missile barrage launched against its territory.
There are no reports of major damages. Markets are downplaying the threat of a further escalation.
What can the West do about this?
🧵
During the night, several drones have been spotted in the vicinity of Iranian major city of Isfahan, South of Tehran. The city is located in a strategic position of Iranian oil and network, with main pipelines reaching its vicinity.
Available reports of the event are providing
just a few, confused, details of what happened.
Iran state media reported that air defences downed "a suspicious object".
Other reports say three drones were. Flights are suspended in the area. At least three explosions were heard near the city's airport and army airbase.
🚨Clouds are gathering around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the major global energy chokepoints, as🇮🇱Israel vows to respond to🇮🇷Iran.
From Europe to Asia, gas prices are rising along with the preoccupation for the security of supplies in case the escalation goes out of control.
🧵
After a Monday which left many analysts quite disappointed because of a mild market reaction, now we are starting to see some big movements in global energy indexes, especially regarding gas prices.
TTF front-month reached +6.5% this morning and now is still +4%, marking the
4th-day of consecutive rise of the major🇪🇺EU gas index, also greatly affecting electricity and carbon prices, both at multi-month highs because of the rising gas prices.
In a matter of a few days, EU gas prices erased the year-to-date losses recorded after the early January 2024
🚨A new wave of🇷🇺Russian attacks vs🇺🇦Ukrainian gas storages and power plants send prices to skyrocket in🇪🇺EU and knocks down Kyiv's energy supply. Energy and war are deeply interconnected.
While some say the energy crisis has already ended, the reality says something else.
🧵
Last weeks have been dramatic for Ukraine's energy system.
Russian troops have launched multiple attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructures from occupied Ukraine, from the Russian territory and from air. Drones and ballistic missiles have particularly targeted
gas storage sites in the West of Ukraine and power plants both in the East, near the major city of Kharkiv, and in central Ukraine.
The last attack on April 11 has been particularly devastating.
