🇪🇬Egypt is doing everything it can to bolster LNG exports to🇪🇺EU and collect additional revenues for its stranded domestic economy.
The targets are to maximise domestic production and rationalise consumption, hitting a new high in LNG exports for 2022.
At what costs?🧵
According to the🇪🇬Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla🇪🇬LNG exports will hit a new high of 8 mt/y in 2022.
This means +8% compared to 2021 as🇪🇬tries to gain from the hefty prices of LNG paid by🇪🇺countries.
This morning, TTF month-head is surging by nearly 5%
To maximise the🇪🇬exports towards🇪🇺will, Cairo is recalibrating the share of LNG towards🇪🇺whilst sending less to Asia.
In 2022, 🇪🇺countries will absorb 90% of deliveries, comapred with 80% in 2022.
In June,🇪🇬&🇪🇺Commission Presidents released a Joint Statement on energy cooperation
The🇪🇬🇪🇺bilateral cooperation focuses on several issues:
-Fostering sustainable development
-Combatting climate change and environmental degradation
-Ensuring energy security
-Facilitating a balanced and just green transition
During #COP27 🇪🇬🇪🇺signed an MoU on green hydrogen(🟢H2)
🟢H2 played a big part at COP27.
🇩🇪German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that🟢H2
"is happening now” with the🇩🇪government announcing a first tender for green ammonia and budget for import scheme of more than €4 billion.
He presented the idea in a roundtable with🇪🇬President El-Sisi
But the reality on the ground says that it is🇪🇬LNG that is gaining attention as an alternative to the imports of🇷🇺Russian gas.
Countries in🇪🇺EU are accelerating the deployment of new import infrastructures.🇩🇪has just inaugurated its first floating terminal euractiv.com/section/energy…
🇪🇬is a major gas producer and has done much during the last years to ramp up production and expand its reserve base.
Onshore and offshore fields attracted IOCs like🇮🇹ENI,🇬🇧BP and🇷🇺Rosneft.
This has been key to respond to the higher🇪🇬domestic demand:
- 2011 48bcm
- 2021 62bcm
+29%
But now🇪🇬is doing all it can to boost LNG exports from its 2 terminals.
In August, amid a🥵heatwave across the region, the government rationed electricity to save around 15% of natural gas used in⚡️power generation and increase LNG exports to generate foreign currency.
🇪🇬has suffered from an acute foreign currency shortage, worsened by🇷🇺invasion of🇺🇦Ukraine, high global commodity prices, the collapse of tourism from🇷🇺and🇺🇦 and the sky-high costs of borrowing.
In March-Aug. urban and core inflation accelerated to 13.1% and 13.7 %📈
Meanwhile...
the war is catapulting food prices to unsustainable levels. Wheat's cost has increased by 44%, sunflower oil by 32%📈
🇺🇦grain exports have resumed, but the🇷🇺🇺🇦deal is hanging by a thread.
With a growing population of over 106 million, a food crisis will bring pure chaos in🇪🇬
The energy crisis is not just a🇪🇺phenomenon.
Authorities in Brussels and🇪🇺capitals need to understand this before the energy crisis generates spinoff effects, bringing more and more political crises.
Urging our neighbours to export additional gas has costs, for us and for them.

The Qatari Shock: Italy Accelerates Nuclear Renaissance Plans Amidst LNG Collapse

The unfolding energy crisis in the Middle East, coupled with Italy's heavy dependency on Qatari LNG, is pushing Rome to reconsider nuclear energy.
🧵 Image
The Meloni government is accelerating dialogue with international partners in a bid to develop new power plants as soon as possible. According to the Italian Minister for Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy should restart a programme to construct new
nuclear power plants in the Mediterranean country “as soon as possible.” The Minister assessed that these plants must be safe and “economically convenient.” However, the definition of “economically convenient” remains vague, as many European countries currently building

The U.S. military has struck Kharg Island, Iran’s largest oil terminal and one of the most significant facilities of its kind.

President Donald Trump has promised further actions against the island’s oil infrastructure should Tehran fail to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

There appears to be no end to the escalation of the energy war unfolding in the Middle East. Speaking to the press late Friday, the U.S. President stated that the military targeted all military installations on Kharg Island, claiming to have “totally obliterated every MILITARY
target.”
Yet, he also noted that the oil infrastructure was left untouched by his orders—effectively leaving the door open for further strikes. However, the escalation appears to be only at the beginning.
Trump added, “should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with

Shell is the first international major to declare force majeure to clients who source LNG from Qatar.

The highly-anticipated next wave of LNG, which was expected to stabilise global markets and provide energy security, is crumbling as a consequence of the U.S.-Israel-Iran War

The British major Shell has communicated to clients who entered into contract with the company that the same will be unable to deliver Qatari LNG to clients.

The British energy major Shell has communicated to clients under contract that it will be unable to deliver Qatari LNG
for the foreseeable future. This force majeure declaration exempts the company from its contractual obligation to deliver specified volumes, shielding it from legal liability for the consequences of non-delivery. However, while the declaration protects the company from legal

Putin’s Energy Masterclass: Exploiting the Hormuz Crisis to Break the EU’s Resolve

Vladimir Putin is threatening to cut remaining gas supplies to Europe at the exact moment when EU inventories are the most fragile in years.
An honest masterclass in energy geopolitics.
🧵 Image
Yesterday, speaking to Kremlin-aligned media, the Russian President alluded to the possibility of halting gas exports to the EU abruptly: "If they're going to shut us down in a month or two anyway, wouldn't it be better to stop now and go to countries that are reliable partners?
And establish ourselves there," he said.

These comments refer to the EU plan to completely phase out natural gas imports from Russia, which currently arrive in Central and Eastern Europe through pipelines and as LNG in Northwestern Europe. Various EU Member States are still

This is, literally, the most important countdown in the world.
Oil exporters in the Persian Gulf, currently unable to export their hydrocarbon bounty, are all facing a dire short-term outlook.

🧵 Image
Unable to store additional oil in strategic reserves and state-owned or privately-owned facilities, they will soon be forced to halt production at some of the largest oil fields on earth.

This will have disruptive consequences for following these countries:
🇮🇶Iraq
🇰🇼Kuwait
🇦🇪UAE
🇶🇦Qatar
🇸🇦Saudi Arabia
When these producers fill their storage tanks to capacity, there will be no other possibility but to curtail production.
Depending on the geology of the field and the specific technologies implemented, shutting in wells could even

The Perfect Storm: EU Storage Hits 30% Threshold as Qatari Supply Vanishes

Let’s talk about the dramatic situation of EU gas storage, which dropped below 30% the same day Iran struck Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, halting all Qatari LNG production.

🧵 Image
Do coincidences happen in energy geopolitics? I honestly don’t think so. Yesterday, Iranian drones targeted and hit two of the largest facilities for LNG production in the world, paralysing Qatar’s LNG operations and causing exports to cease completely.
The Qatari Ministry of Defence has confirmed the strike, but state authorities are not disclosing the severity of the damage. This suggests we might be at the beginning of a prolonged period of reduced supplies coming from the Middle East’s largest exporter.
