🇪🇬Egypt is doing everything it can to bolster LNG exports to🇪🇺EU and collect additional revenues for its stranded domestic economy.
The targets are to maximise domestic production and rationalise consumption, hitting a new high in LNG exports for 2022.
At what costs?🧵
According to the🇪🇬Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla🇪🇬LNG exports will hit a new high of 8 mt/y in 2022.
This means +8% compared to 2021 as🇪🇬tries to gain from the hefty prices of LNG paid by🇪🇺countries.
This morning, TTF month-head is surging by nearly 5%
To maximise the🇪🇬exports towards🇪🇺will, Cairo is recalibrating the share of LNG towards🇪🇺whilst sending less to Asia.
In 2022, 🇪🇺countries will absorb 90% of deliveries, comapred with 80% in 2022.
In June,🇪🇬&🇪🇺Commission Presidents released a Joint Statement on energy cooperation
The🇪🇬🇪🇺bilateral cooperation focuses on several issues:
-Fostering sustainable development
-Combatting climate change and environmental degradation
-Ensuring energy security
-Facilitating a balanced and just green transition
During #COP27 🇪🇬🇪🇺signed an MoU on green hydrogen(🟢H2)
🟢H2 played a big part at COP27.
🇩🇪German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that🟢H2
"is happening now” with the🇩🇪government announcing a first tender for green ammonia and budget for import scheme of more than €4 billion.
He presented the idea in a roundtable with🇪🇬President El-Sisi
But the reality on the ground says that it is🇪🇬LNG that is gaining attention as an alternative to the imports of🇷🇺Russian gas.
Countries in🇪🇺EU are accelerating the deployment of new import infrastructures.🇩🇪has just inaugurated its first floating terminal euractiv.com/section/energy…
🇪🇬is a major gas producer and has done much during the last years to ramp up production and expand its reserve base.
Onshore and offshore fields attracted IOCs like🇮🇹ENI,🇬🇧BP and🇷🇺Rosneft.
This has been key to respond to the higher🇪🇬domestic demand:
- 2011 48bcm
- 2021 62bcm
+29%
But now🇪🇬is doing all it can to boost LNG exports from its 2 terminals.
In August, amid a🥵heatwave across the region, the government rationed electricity to save around 15% of natural gas used in⚡️power generation and increase LNG exports to generate foreign currency.
🇪🇬has suffered from an acute foreign currency shortage, worsened by🇷🇺invasion of🇺🇦Ukraine, high global commodity prices, the collapse of tourism from🇷🇺and🇺🇦 and the sky-high costs of borrowing.
In March-Aug. urban and core inflation accelerated to 13.1% and 13.7 %📈
Meanwhile...
the war is catapulting food prices to unsustainable levels. Wheat's cost has increased by 44%, sunflower oil by 32%📈
🇺🇦grain exports have resumed, but the🇷🇺🇺🇦deal is hanging by a thread.
With a growing population of over 106 million, a food crisis will bring pure chaos in🇪🇬
The energy crisis is not just a🇪🇺phenomenon.
Authorities in Brussels and🇪🇺capitals need to understand this before the energy crisis generates spinoff effects, bringing more and more political crises.
Urging our neighbours to export additional gas has costs, for us and for them.

🇮🇹Italy has long dreamed of becoming the🇪🇺EU hub for gas. At the centre of the Mediterranean Sea🇮🇹has multiple entry points, possibly exporting gas in excess to the North.
Meloni's right-wing government is proposing new projects, including 4 LNG terminals.
Not an easy task🧵 Image
The map above shows how many gas projects have been discussed in🇮🇹over the last 20 years.
One other project, the LNG Ravenna (not in the map), is the only one with local and state officials on the same page.
The 1 billion € project with 5bcm/y capacity will be realised by 4Q-24 Image
One other major project is the FSRU unit in Piombino (Tuscany) with 4-5 bcm/y capacity. Yet, the terminal is openly challenged by the local mayor, from the same party of the new🇮🇹PM Giorgia Meloni, for safety & economic reasons.

Emmanuel Macron warned that the US risked “fragmenting the west” with a flagship climate law that the French president said would distort competition by massively subsidising American companies to the detriment of European industries.
ft.com/content/a1a03a…
The harsh words, which came on the first day of his state visit to Washington hosted by president Joe Biden, could weigh on the discussions between the leaders on Thursday.
In a speech on Wednesday night at the French embassy in Washington, Macron said while he agreed with the
objectives of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, it would have negative repercussions for Europe by making it less attractive for companies to invest there.
“The choices of the past few months, in particular the IRA, are choices that will fragment the west,” he said. “We need to

avoid escalation and expansion of the crisis,” while also promoting peace talks.
Michel told Xi that the EU counted on China “to contribute to ending Russia’s brutal destruction and occupation,” according to a statement from Michel’s spokesman.

Neptune is owned by China Investment Corporation (CIC), the Carlyle Group (CG.O) and CVC Capital Partners. It has guided for its 2022 post-tax operating cash flow to reach $2.5 billion-$3 billion and expects production to grow to 165,000 boed next year.

Germany and France appear to have set their differences on hydrogen regulation aside as part of wider efforts to resolve simmering tensions between the EU’s two largest countries.
euractiv.com/section/energy…
Hydrogen is expected to play a critical role in decarbonising industries like steelmaking and chemicals, with the European Commission planning 10 million tonnes of domestic renewable hydrogen production and 10 million tonnes of imports by 2030 to replace fossil gas.
However, France and Germany have clashed over EU rules that will govern the future production of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen in Europe.
At the heart of the dispute is the definition of “renewable” hydrogen against “low-carbon” hydrogen, which also includes fuels produced

🇪🇺🇳🇴frictions ahead?
Norway is postponing its next round of new oil and gas exploration licences by a further three years as part of a domestic political deal that cuts across its promises to do all it can to help Europe with its energy crisis.
ft.com/content/08e7da…
The so-called 26th licencing round for new oil and gasfields, originally scheduled for 2022, had already been delayed but will now not take place for the entire parliamentary period, which ends in Sept. 2025.
This is part of a deal the centre-left Norwegian government struck with a leftwing party to pass its budget. Norway is increasingly pushing itself as a reliable and democratic supplier to Europe. The country has displaced Russia as Europe’s biggest supplier of gas since Moscow’s
