🧵/ link in the last tweet. A tapped call reveals the high-ranked Russian officer, commander of the 27th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade Sergey Safonov, stabbed to death an elderly Ukrainian woman when retreating from the Kharkiv region. His comrade also shot her husband.
Today our colleagues from @cxemu investigative project published their OTG report about volunteers from the city of Izyum, who buried the bodies of local civilians and Ukrainian soldiers killed during the Russian occupation. radiosvoboda.org/a/skhemy-spovi…
Part of the story is a tapped call, obtained by @cxemu from UA authorities. A guy on the tape describes the chaotic retreat of the Russian forces.
Translation: "They were evacuating, an elderly man and a woman came in their way. Battalion commander from 96th shot the man, and our bad guy, the superior one, stabbed the woman to death".
According to the call, this unprovoked murder happened on September 25th, 5 days before the Russians lost control over the strategically important city of Lyman. Battalion commander have been sent there actually to evacuate 27th brigade commander (illustrative photo).
The phone number allowed to track its owner, Oleg Gasilin (on the right on the photo below).
As open sources show, Gasilin serves in 27th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, unit 61899, based in Mosrentgen, a small town near Moscow, which was included in the city limits in 2012. Part of the 1st TA since 2014. archive.ph/9DAPj
In another part of the tapped call, Gasilin specifies that by "our bad guy" he means the brigade’s commander. The commander of the 27th brigade, according to several open sources, is Colonel (Guards) Sergey Safonov letovochurch.ru/novosti/novost….
.@cxemu reached out to Gasilin, who disclosed an interesting fact: he had already spoken to official investigators in relation to this murder, which means it didn’t come unnoticed even within the RU army – though Gasilin himself only have heard about the murder, not witnessed it.
A Russian lawyer we spoke to says the fact of such an interrogation means that the suspect probably has already been detained. We identified a dozen of Safonov’s friends and all his relatives. Some of them answered our questions.
None of them denied that the investigation is ongoing, nor any were surprised. Still, they hesitated to confirm it directly. One asked us what we know exactly about the case ourselves. Safonov himself hasn’t been online since Nov. 15th (though there may be other reasons for that)
In the tapped call Gasilin also describes the chaotic retreat, mentioning that Safonov knew about massive number of KIAs, but didn’t report them to his commanders – which is typical and one of the root problems of the Russian army on any level.
Translation, part 1: "They kicked our butts, like Frenchmen did back in 1812. Most important: brigade commander didn’t tell we’re going to retreat, where are we going to go, where do we gather".
Translation part 2: "Next day he reported to the army – he didn’t report that all AA gunners fled, didn’t tell them a word about our losses, though he knew himself. Signalmen’s equipment have all been burned out, we had no communication link with the brigade".
Translation part 3: "What happened to infantry is unclear too, one battalion seemed to escape, no one can find the second one".
Killing the elderly couple was not an isolated incident, says Gasilin. "We were on a IFV, smashed one civilian car with khohols into pieces", – he says about yet another episode of killing civilians.
Safonov had a perfect career: Moscow Higher Command School, elite Tamanskaya division, 100th Support Regiment (created personally by Shojgu), awarded Order of Courage for Syria. "My friend, the colonel, future general" – his friend wrote, and he was not wrong back in 2021.
The war in Ukraine turned things upside down. 27th brigade suffered painful losses during the first days of war near the city of Sumy. POWs, who name Safonov as their commander, say they were "dropped in the middle of nowhere as a kittens" without food, fuel or any support.
Some of POWs from the 27th brigade say they were easily taken prisoners by Sumy territorial defense dressed in civilian clothes. Maybe that’s why he was triggered by that elderly couple? t.me/rf200_nooow/702
Even if Safonov will escape any charges, his career seems to be ruined. 27th brigade escaped from Kharkiv region in a fully chaotic manner, leaving a lot of equipment, including modern T-90 tanks illustrative video)
Now 27th brigade an entry hub for mobiks, who complain about the same things all mobiks do: poor equipment, no training, etc, etc. Some refused to fight and were detained in infamous basements in Zaycevo (“LPR”) verstka.media/otkazniki-v-po…
On this recent video you can see the premises of the unit 61899: conscripts complain they’re being sent to Ukraine with Hepatitis C, which effectively means being dead after the first serious wound (t.me/ostorozhno_nov…).

This story was made possible by our brave journalists working on the ground in Ukraine, as well as their colleagues doing their job in harsh conditions caused by damage to Ukrainian infrastructure inflicted by Russian strikes. Please praise their efforts!
Personal credits where they are due: to my colleague and as always reliable co-author @pustota, brilliant TV star @ValeriaEgoshyna, to @Mike_Eckel for some tricky slang translation tips and @natasedletska for making things running smooth!
Today I was invited by @tvrain to speak about colonel Safonov and an investigation about him. They plugged in 2 soldiers from 27th brigade who fought alongside Safonov in Ukraine. What they told is not only confirming our findings, but reveals many more ⬇️
Both guys, Vyacheslav Doronichev (on the right) and Valentin Erochkin, say that they were Safonov’s personal guards on the front lines. Erochkin even claims he saved Safonov’s life during a Ukrainian shelling.
Doronichev says that Safonov personally organized tortures of civilians in Kharkiv region. "They shot out their ears, cut fingers, all under his direct command" (he says he tried to stop it where possible, but take it with a grain of salt).
Doronichev characterizes Safonov and other high-ranked officers as a "cowards": "What they do is sitting in the shelters and drinking vodka all the time. We did all the job, they receive stars and promotions".
According to Doronichev, in just 2 weeks the 27th brigade lost 30 (!) T-90 tanks (for the reference there are just 26 lost T-90A and 6 T-90M on @oryxspioenkop’s list). oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack…
Another guy who was on air, Valentin Erochkin, fought in 27th brigade as a volunteer. He says the same: total alcoholism among officers, constant underpayment, appropriation of the soldiers’ achievements.
Again: grain of salt pls, but this matches the overall picture we saw in course of our investigation together with @cxemu. See the full @tvrain video here:
Here's the small text version of this follow-up and a call for witnesses – looks like there's still a lot to reveal about colonel Safonov and crimes he might be involved into. svoboda.org/a/otstrelivali…

🧵/ link in the last tweet. Together with @KOvsianyi from Ukrainian investigative project @cxemu and @Mike_Eckel we found a bunch of recently dug trenches and fortifications Russia made before its retreatment from Kherson and the right bank of Dnipro river.
In this thread I will post the satellite images of these trenches which we found on @planet. Photos were taken on November 10th. In the end I will post a video comparing these pics to Oct. 8th imagery.

1) 2 km long trench line north-east of Kakhovska PP (46.78808, 33.42760)
2) Fortifications for some equipment in this line of trenches (46.7807 33.4182)

Russian media report that Kirill Stremousov, Russian-appointed deputy head of Kherson Oblast, died in a car crash in Kherson region svoboda.org/a/rossiyskiy-z… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And to prove that it was not an isolated case, here's another photo of Stremousov (in yet another car) with the seatbelt buckled behind his back. Image
As many people noticed in Oct. when I posted the first photo, driving w/o the seatbelts is common for military all around the world to escape quickly. Though Stremousov wasn't a military guy and never showed up near any real combat areas. Maybe it was just a show-off for him.

Quick 🧵1/5 What do you think of when you read about "humanitarian aid"? Right, that’s what Russian conscripts badly need. In the cold and dirty trenches in Ukraine? No: they need it in the training center in Russia, Ulyanovsk. ⬇️
2/5 The video above was published today by a journalist from Russian Mary El republic and it shows how conscripts from there "receive humanitarian aid sent to them from home" (archive.ph/kB0ej). Included: warm clothes, medications, chainsaws & "embroidered amulets". Image
3/5 "Chainsaws" sounds interesting, because today several Russian TG channels reported a rebellion of mobiks in Ulyanovsk training center. They demanded promised payments they didn't receive.

Quick 🧵/ Igor Igorevich Stepanov, 56 years old, former marine, was killed in Ukraine. What’s interesting is the fact that he was recently recruited by "Wagner PMC" and this fact was publicly revealed by local media in Volokonovka, Belgorod region, where he lived ⬇️.
A large obituary of Stepanov written by his son (on the right on the photo above) was published on Sunday. It says that Stepanov was posthumously awarded with a Wagner's medal for "blood and bravery". (Source: archive.ph/zUDuf)
According to the obituary, in 1999 Stepanov was offered a position of the "instructor" in the 61st Naval Infantry Brigade, after several years he moved to a landing-assault company there, sailed many seas and even fought pirates in Somalia. He retired in 2011.

🧵/ link in the last tweet. Together with @cxemu and @KOvsianyi we found a photo and a video of a Russian soldiers and equipment being evacuated from the right bank of Dnipro river to Nova Kakhovka by ferry. Ferries go unloaded to the right bank at least since Oct. 8th.
The video was posted by "LPR" soldier called Makar Teplinsky on Oct. 13th. On Oct. 10th he posted a photo from the same journey (archive.ph/SZTTz). The journey itself might have happened a few days earlier.
We geolocated the video and the photo as filmed here: 46.776746, 33.323598, near the Dnipro right bank, Kazatske village. @GeoConfirmed

🧵Together with @pustota we checked several videos of Russian POWs, where soldiers or authors of the videos claim that they were recently and/or forcibly mobilized. We found that in some cases it’s not true: some may pretend to be conscripts, expecting better treatment. Image
As an example we checked the video of 5 Russian POWs taken near Svatove, where 4 of them claim to be recently mobilized. t.me/Pravda_Gerashc…
I identified one of them, Vladimir Zhdanov (second on the left, vk.com/id171349875), and messaged his friend on VKontakte. He told me that back in April Zhdanov already voluntarily fought in Ukraine. 2 years ago Zhdanov congratulated his followers with "Mil intel day". Image
