A thread on @WorkSafeBC's woefully inadequate Covid guidelines for employers. 🧵
1/ the 2022 guidelines fail to mention #LongCovid, though this is a serious disease that has caused ~4M Americans to leave the workforce

worksafebc.com/en/resources/h…
2/ The guidelines say "As COVID-19 vaccinations have become widely available to British Columbians, the overall risk of COVID-19 transmission and serious consequences has diminished."

Really? 👀
3/ the guidelines fail to mention masks as a way for employers to prevent Covid. The focus is on handwashing 🧼👎🏼
4/ the guidelines fail to mention the current pediatric healthcare crisis that is causing BC kids to get sick & die bc.ctvnews.ca/busiest-pediat…
5/ wouldn't it be nice to let parents work in safe work environments or enable remote work to all who can so they don't bring home more respiratory viruses, @WorkSafeBC?
6/ back to #LongCovid. It is not rare and vaccinations only reduce the risk slightly (some studies say ~15%).

Read this if you think Long Covid is not an issue 👇🏼
7/ here's a great study on the medium term impacts of Covid.

⬆️ cardiac infarction
⬆️ pulmonary embolism up to 89 days post infection

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.56…
8/ Covid has been linked to immune dysregulation 8+ months (or more, we don't know) post infection nature.com/articles/s4159…
9/ #LongCovid is more likely to impact women. What is @WorkSafeBC doing to protect women?
10/ then there's the risk of reinfections, which @WorkSafeBC also conveniently omits reuters.com/business/healt…
11/ in sum, Covid isn't over. It isn't the flu. @WorkSafeBC hides behind our PHO (who must resign) & endangers BC workers & their families. Do better. We keep receipts.

From today's report:

"Indigenous respondents held more negative views on government’s performance than others, with almost 90% disagreeing with the statement "'The B.C. Government managed the pandemic well'"
"The abrupt removal of most restrictions in April 2022 left most First Nations with no time to react to the changes in areas surrounding their communities and lands."
"More consideration should have been given to the impacts of removing almost all restrictions in April
2022 on rural, remote, and small communities with significant tourism"

The BC government held a private press conference today in response to a 150 page independent report that found their pandemic response lacking.

Why was the press conference not public?

I'd like to ask our provincial health officer to stop wearing performative Indigenous jewelry & accessories out of respect for this population that has been disproportionately harmed by her lax Covid policies.

A disgusting article in which Dr. Henry conflates violent anti-vax extremists with Covid conscious activists asking for more protections like masks.

Let me be very clear: if she actually listened to us, she'd know we are not advocating for "Covid Zero" but for simple effective airborne precautions that reduce morbidity like masks.
It is not lost on me that she met with Northern Health & First Nations Health Authority but mentioned nothing about the 5yo Indigenous girl, Mavis, from BC's North who died in November of Influenza

A great study on the medium-term risks of Covid-19 & associations with hospitalization for respiratory and non‐respiratory conditions.

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.56…
"The known: COVID-19 has been linked with increased risks of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and thrombotic disease events"
"The new:...hospitalisations of people with myocarditis and pericarditis, pulmonary embolism, acute myocardial infarction, and stroke were significantly more frequent after COVID-19."

A lot of folks who sound alarms about Covid & immune dysregulation are looked at like they have a third eye or accused of being alarmist.

Well, here's a great read on the issue by Nobel laureate & immunologist @ProfPCDoherty
doherty.edu.au/news-events/se…
Tl;dr (though I hope you do read!) -- Covid attacks the immune system
Patients with Long Covid had highly activated innate immune cells, lacked naive T and B cells & showed elevated expression of type I IFN (IFN-B) and type III FN (IFN-11) that remained persistently high 8 months post infection.
