With everyone sharing their #SpotifyWrapped, I want to start my favorite annual tradition: Year-End Listicles. I love collecting listicles celebrating the best X thing that year. I will share all the ones I find, without prejudice in a 🧵. Please share good ones you find with me!
To get us started, the reliable as always @Pocket put together a "Best of 2022", which is a listicle of listicles of great articles from the year. Enjoy! getpocket.com/collections?ut…
@Pocket I honestly have never seen most of these, but next up is @GIPHY's top gifs of the year. If I had to pick one it would be the Paul Rudd one; not so much for the gif itself, but for my love of Paul Rudd giphy.medium.com/giphys-top-gif…
Two more coming at ya: Apps of the year. First up is my OS of choice, iOS. Here are @Apple's App Store Award winners techcrunch.com/2022/11/29/app…
Plus, we got @Google's Best of 2022. I own nothing with Android, but as I said, I share all Year-End Listicles even if I don't get much personal use out of them play.google.com/store/apps/edi…
Sticking with the love for Google, here is @YouTube's roundup for 2022. I spent a *lot* of time on this website, but I can honestly say I have watched one (1) of the videos or creators on this list this year. Can you guess which? youtube.com/trends/2022/us/
Alright, let's start a week of media rankings. I am terrible at consuming media, but, hot take, I like movies, music, and TV. So here are some listicles celebrating them. First up, @RollingStone's top 100 songs. What's your favorite? rollingstone.com/music/music-li…
Quick addition: here is @pitchfork's version of that same list. I did not cross-reference the lists. The only thing I know is Pitchfork's #1 did not make Rolling Stones's top 100. Interpret that however you'd like. pitchfork.com/features/lists…
@pitchfork Finishing up the music links I have, here is @pitchfork's best albums of the year. I can proudly say that I recognize like 5 of the artists. So... pretty impressive if you ask me. pitchfork.com/features/lists…
Wait! One more music link. I don't have an NYT subscription at the moment, so you'll have to tell me which albums won nytimes.com/2022/11/30/art…
Onto other media rankings, we have @TheAtlantic's best movies of 2022. I haven't seen any of them (whoops!), but I will not stop talking about @BulletTrain if you want to chat about it theatlantic.com/culture/archiv…
@TheAtlantic @BulletTrain God, there is so much good TV out there (I still really need to watch Andor & Atlanta S3&4) that I still need to watch. @AbbottElemABC is fantastic and deserves to be here. Check out the rest of @RollingStone's list! rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-m…
How do influencers keep such a consistent schedule? I gotta give them some credit. I tried to tweet YELs for like a week and couldn't even keep that going. (I say like anyone is ever reading my tweets). Anyway, I am still committed to tweeting them all, so here they come!
To close out on media week (that was supposed to end two weeks ago but who's counting), we got @RollingStone's best TV episodes. This list makes me think After Party was good? Is that true? I saw that Simpsons episode though! rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-m…
I have no idea what @LWLies is but they also have a TV show YEL. Shout-out to Derry Girls making the cut. Very funny show!
lwlies.com/articles/the-2…
I tend not to love @TheAtlantic's culture desk, but they definitely had some great choices for the 10 best albums list. But also music is incredibly subjective so what do I know theatlantic.com/culture/archiv…
Next up, books! @NewYorker is up there for the best book recommendations, so you better pay attention! Also this list is insanely long, kudos to anyone who gets to like 10% of these within a year newyorker.com/best-books-2022
@TIME is also a pretty reliable source for recommendations and 100, while also insane, is a more manageable list. This is all of the insight on books I have for you at the moment. time.com/collection/mus…
You know what they say; you should absolutely judge a book by its cover. So, please ignore the previous lists and only read the books on this list. (Kinda weird how few of the cover art actually loaded though lol) lithub.com/the-103-best-b…
Are @tiktok_us and other viral videos still media? Technically, yes but emotionally? Who's to say. I'm including them anyway. Here is a list from @TheSource. I like the giraffe one! And the chipmunk is cute although I could do without the voice thesource.com/2022/12/13/the…
For some reason, @lifehacker decided that you can hack your life by watching viral videos? Either way, this is a great list of 25 videos. I LOVE the guy who went to every single Rainforest Cafe lifehacker.com/25-of-the-grea…
This list from @cracked is so long, but... pretty good? I love the casketmobile
cracked.com/article_36425_…
As always, I will end my media compilation with my favorite president and a classic entry in the year-end listicle game, @BarackObama's favorite things. Check them out!

Wait one more album list. It's from some guy in Chicago (lol). I know I just shared another one from a guy from Chicago, but this is a different guy (credit @JoshhTerry) joshhterry.substack.com/p/the-60-best-…
Alright, our next phase of YELs is photos, starting with images from @PopSci. The first picture is probably the prettiest and coolest photo I've ever seen in my life (how's that for a clickbait headline?) popsci.com/science/nation…
Who doesn't love funny animals? I certainly love 'em. Here are some pictures of them! Courtesy of @ComedyWildlife comedywildlifephoto.com/gallery/comedy…
The Northern Lights are very cool. I would like to go there. Whoever likes this tweet gets to go with me, all expenses paid for*, so make sure you like this tweet ASAP to win!

*by you, for me to go. You would be volunteering to take me. Thanks.
capturetheatlas.com/northern-light…
Are the photos here loading for people? They aren't for me. Oh well, @AP takes so many great photos. Hopefully, you can see them! apnews.com/article/2022-p…
Shoutout to @Nature for compiling the best #Science images. Remember the black hole image? That was wild. All of these pictures are super cool, to be honest nature.com/immersive/d415…
Does bad fashion count as photographs? Probably not, but I had nowhere else to put it. So here is @BuzzFeed's worst fashion trends of 2022. I proudly have worn none of them buzzfeed.com/mollycapobianc…
Alright, last photoset of the year. This is probably the best collection of photos of the year because @GettyImages takes some of the best images every year. Enjoy!

creativeinsights.gettyimages.com/en/trends/year…
I've tweeted more today than the past 3 years combined. I'm tired. My fingers are exhausted. We are ending today with important people from 2022. First up, the 10 best at science. They scienced so hard. nature.com/immersive/d415…
All women are great, but here are the best ones. For some reason, my fiancee was not mentioned. I will be writing to @BBC to voice my disapproval soon. bbc.co.uk/news/resources…
This is a fun twist on a year-end listicle. The @nytimes made a quiz of the faces for all the most important people this year. I got 100% because I look at too many listicles. How did you do? nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Alright. I'm finishing what I started. Here are all of the remaining listicles I have in no particular order because I am already 16 days past the new year and somehow there are still a ton of untweeted YELs. Thank you.
Here is @TIME's best inventions of 2022. Humans are incredibly innovative; it's truly wonderful. The hearing aids are particularly incredible time.com/best-invention…
In that same vain (and probably with greater than or equal to one overlaps), @PopSci made a list of 100 innovations, including James Webb telescope, which is quite the telescope popsci.com/technology/bes…
Here's @getembedded interviewing 22 internet people about 2022's defining posts. Some of these are so deep in the internet weeds I had no idea they happened, but that's the internet for ya baybeee embedded.substack.com/p/22-internet-…
I said I would share with you all YELs without discrimination, so I must post a list from Scott's Cheap Flights patting themselves on the back about how great they are at finding cheap flights. These deals are not useful to present-day us, but it is a YEL. scottscheapflights.com/guides/best-ch…
Science! Breakthroughs! So much AI talk! Here is @TheAtlantic's top 10 breakthroughs of they year theatlantic.com/newsletters/ar…
@Grubhub put together a list of top-ordered dishes from 2022. There isn't much useful information in here. Burritos are popular (duh). What is Australian cuisine?? multivu.com/players/Englis…
The only "politics" newsletter I read, @washingtonpost's 5-Minute Fix, put together a list of the most undersold political stories of 2022. These are all super interesting and worth watching for this year s2.washingtonpost.com/camp-rw/?track…
On a lighter political note, here is 11 times politics was funny from @TheAtlantic. The Dr. Oz story was particularly funny to me theatlantic.com/newsletters/ar…
Let's keep the good times rolling. Here is @washingtonpost's list of good news from 2022. Some of these don't really seem like "good news" though. Pickleball becoming a popular sport is more just a thing that happened washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
Here's another good news list from @FRANCE24. I'd argue this more closely hews to the definition of good news. Sadly, neither of these mentions the best news (iykyk) france24.com/en/environment…
Last positive news list. This one is brought to you by @WIRED. It features pigeons, beavers, and telescopes, which are all very cool. wired.com/story/2022-pos…
Twitter updating to show # of views on every tweet makes it even more depressing how much effort I'm putting into this thing that no one is looking at. Anyway, here is @TheWeek discussing 10 scientific breakthroughs theweek.com/in-depth/10193…
I know I already did a week of top media YELs, but there are a few stragglers I'm missing like @Kotaku's top 10 games of 2022. I've played none of them. kotaku.com/goty-best-game…
Reading these listicles of best movies, TV shows, games, etc. makes me question what I even did last year. Or maybe there's too much content and it's impossible to even scratch the surface. Both things are likely true. Anyway, @kottke's best movie posters kottke.org/23/01/the-best…
I did actually listen to some of these podcasts though! Now that @dadwroteaporno podcast ended, I might have time to add another podcast or two to my rotation (lol jk, my backlog is still enormous) esquire.com/entertainment/…
I have absolutely no use for any tools in my life. I am not handy whatsoever. But other people are! They might enjoy this video listicle of tools
Back over to the news portion of YELs. My guy Paul here compiled a list of the best headlines from 2022. There are some really funny ones. His thread is also really long, which is encouraging for me. But he gets engagement, which is discouraging for me
I never get a chance to read enough of them, but @washingtonpost's Monkey Cage blog always publishes some really interesting political science research. Here are their top 10 most popular posts washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/…
A classic mainstay of YELs is the @TSA list of weirdest finds. This year's list features cash hidden in crutches and someone trying to hide a gun inside a PlayStation. People are wild. washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/01…
If the previous YEL didn't blow your mind, get ready for @SmithsonianMag's 96 fascinating finds from 2022 smithsonianmag.com/history/ninety…
Or how about @TheAtlantic Science Desk's 74 mind-blowers from 2022. Apparently, people frequently steal parrots? theatlantic.com/science/archiv…
Alternatively, you can read @kottke's list. Some of them are fun (Meat Loaf coached JV softball). Some of them are less than fun (guns kill more children than car accidents). All of them are interesting kottke.org/22/12/36-thing…
Okay. I have a few more "miscellaneous" year-end listicles to share, and then I'll wrap up with some themed nights (charts, consolidated reviews, article roundups) before finishing with best-of-the-best, year-over-year favorites this weekend. Almost there!
Memes are classic fodder for YELs, but you do lose a bit when a corporation or journalist tries to get in on the meme trend. That being said, I liked the Spirit Halloween meme (even though @InsideHook tagged their own insta) insidehook.com/article/intern…
Sticking with the funny things. Here are the best news bloopers from 2022
@wirecutter is my go-to source for reviews on most products I buy. They've only failed me once (I do not like my desk chair), so suffice it to say their top 100 popular picks are likely pretty good nytimes.com/wirecutter/lis…
Last one for now. I love @DCist 's Overheard in DC column. I probably like it because I live in DC, but who's to say. Here's the best of 2022 dcist.com/story/22/12/30…
Happy hump day! Moving onto the Charts & Numbers portion of our wrap-up. First up is @chartrdaily, one of my favorite newsletters. They summarized 2022 in 5 charts. Check it out! read.chartr.co/newsletters/20…
In the world of more specific charts, @NPR created 7 charts that touched on how life got more expensive (yay, inflation!) and less expensive (yay, productivity!). Check it out npr.org/2022/12/22/114…
Relatedly, here is @thebalance's ranking of the ten most important numbers in personal finance from 2022. I like the number 29. It's not in the article, just thought I'd share thebalancemoney.com/2022-the-year-…
Wrapping up our Charts & Numbers listicles with my favorite two chart roundups. First off is @Recode's incomplete guide to this very weird year, in charts. They are fun. And weird! vox.com/recode/2345123…
Finally, we have the creme de la creme of annual charts from the people who made charts worthy of news articles: @FiveThirtyEight. They always find inventive ways to show data and information. The chart (and article) on redlining is fantastic fivethirtyeight.com/features/best-…
New day, new theme: here are all of the remaining listicles recommending great articles (that are not in my elite-tier set of YELs). First up, we have @weeklyfilet, a great newsletter that I almost always find a good article in every week newsletter.weeklyfilet.com/best-of-2022/
Next up @infobeautiful did a round-up of the most beautiful (and positive) news stories of the year. I hope we can continue on this stretch of saving the world!

p.s. @infobeautiful please fix your RSS feed. I miss it informationisbeautiful.net/visualizations…
Finally, we have The @puddingviz Cup. Whenever The Pudding puts out an article, I am guaranteed to at least open because they have the most engaging and interesting data storytelling and visualization on the internet, and frankly, it's not even close pudding.cool/process/puddin…
Folks, we're on the penultimate set of YELs. This thread is comically long. No one, including me, has read it in its entirety. We will end with year summaries before the best of the best tomorrow. But first, one I missed from earlier by @macstories macstories.net/stories/macsto…
From @GallupNews, the United States has #2022problems and government is pretty much all of them. I hope one day to have the opportunity to help resolve it. Here are America's top problems: news.gallup.com/poll/406739/go…
Another great polling service, @pewresearch compiled all of their striking findings from polls in 2022. These are some really interesting questions and seem representative of the major stories of the year pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022…
Next up, we have @Google's year round-up in two different formats. The first is their trends report, aka the Year in Search 2022. So many categories. No idea where to start. Have fun! trends.google.com/trends/yis/202…
Google also makes a convenient summary of the Year in Search with a 2-minute @YouTube video. All of these major events condensed into 120 seconds? Seems like it missed some things. If only there was a longer video to summarize the year... (foreshadowing)
We have reached the last year summary and the last tweet in this thread. It comes to you from @voxdotcom who does a great job making these videos annually. Starting tomorrow, new thread and even better listicles. Get excited!

Well, we've finally made it. Almost done with January, and I can finally tweet the best year-end listicles from the year. These are always my favorite to read every December. I hope you enjoy reading this thread as much as this was a nightmare for me to compile.
First up is @Pocket's Top Articles of 2022. This one is a great one to start off with because it's a listicle of listicles, replete with the most read articles, small wins from the year, and several categories compilations. Enjoy! getpocket.com/collections/po…
Every year, Future Crunch publishes a great list of 99 good news stories that you don't always hear about. It's a great read to give you some sense of optimism about the amazing things that humans are able to accomplish (as exemplified by the photo) futurecrunch.com/goodnews2022/
