Poverty and children - a short thread: I work in schools with children who are at risk of being excluded from mainstream education. A high proportion of these children share similar personal circumstances, which may include the follows (frequent overlaps): 1/20
Domestic abuse, violence and conflict in the home or they had fled such circumstances. The ongoing relationship in such situations then include the problem of a toxic parent(s) with a damaging influence; 2/20
Low socio-economic-status - being low family income, a view of the work place being a negative and oppressive experience and being persistently treated in society as a second class citizen because their family lacks presentation, prestige or social gravitas or contacts; 3/20
Problems with poverty that include both food and fuel - going without meals (commonly breakfast) not having food in the cupboards, not having electricity in the meter; 4/20
A poor diet and a preoccupation with hunger rather than nutrition. Lots of high sugar/high fat combinations. Food choices that antagonise pre-existing conditions or lead to poor long term health; 5/20
Hygiene and clothing that might cause them embarrassment, being self conscious because they can't keep up with brands, holes in shoes, only having one or two shirts, pairs of school trousers etc; 6/20
Parent(s) working long hours on low wages desperately trying to make ends meet resulting in less parental supervision, nurture, boundaries and contact; 7/20
A low sense of self-esteem and a fear that their mistakes will have a negative impact, making hard situations at home only worse. A self image that suggests that they are not good enough for college. They feel people automatically won't like them or trust them; 8/20
A sense that committing to school work is a waste of time because there are bigger and more pressing issues and studying doesn't do anything to alleviate those pressures / those pressures are too big to put aside and study; 9/20
Health problems that already include drug dependency, self harm, eating disorders, body dysmorphia, anger management issues, poor self regulation skills/mood management skills, and a general lack of awareness about their own mental health; 10/20
This week alone I have encountered the following signs and symptoms of poverty and financial hardship across multiple schools (difficult to believe - but true): 11/20
Child and parent sharing a coat. In truth this means that parent is going without a coat in order for the child to have one. 12/20
Child not knowing if their games console will be at home when they return from school because parents sell it when money gets tight promising to buy another one to replace it when they can. They've had 10 consoles. 13/20
Child saving money to give to parent to help with debt as a Christmas present. Parent has complicated issues arising from cancer treatment. 14/20
Child having no coat and frequently getting trouble for wearing a jumper that isn't compliant with school rules. Eventually admitting that they don't have a coat and they've been cold. 15/20
Child plays computer games on an obsolete games console and has asked for a more recent, but still obsolete games console for Christmas, because they know that they can't put pressure on parent to buy the most recent machine. 16/20
Child not eating more than two meals over the weekend but making excuses and lying about eating elsewhere when they've been out. Child fainted in school. 17/20
When the right wing press and media talk about people cancelling Netflix, not smoking and/or doing some other glib money saving tip to change their lives (eat porridge/rice/pasta etc) they are absolutely misrepresenting the situation some people are in. 18/20
I've read people saying "There is no poverty in the UK - not real poverty". I don't know what their vision of poverty must be. There is real poverty in the UK - but it is caused by greed and inequality - this is the unnecessary suffering of children. 19/20
What we are setting up here is grinding, rigid, intergenerational poverty and poor mental health that is inescapable by any reasonable means or standards. It is a disgusting indictment of our country, our government and endless years of austerity. 20/20 #GTTO#GTTONow

I think it is time for the cost of politics to go through the austerity machine. There are police forces now that have ZERO canteens to feed officers. Here's what we do: 1/16
Never mind subsidised restaurants. London is full of places to eat. Close the restaurants in Parliament. All of them. Let 'the members' go and buy a sandwich in Boots or bring a packed lunch. 2/16
Expenses? Nope. If the average expenses bill is £150,000 for 650 'members' that's nearly £100 million per year saved right there. Which in context is the turnover of an *entire* smaller police force per annum 3/16
What I *never* get my head around is an average person - no royal connections - arguing bitterly with another very similar person about Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton. As if Markle or Middleton give two shits about either person doing so. 1/4
Can people not see this false dichotomy or operate with the ability to recognise the flaws in both women (and in fact all people) instead of fawning over one and being spiteful about the other? 2/4
I think this stuff is a deplorable distraction from the real issues of inequality, the authentic problems we have in our society, and the need for us to actually recognise and make changes to a country so rich and where yet children are unfed. 3/4
Yesterday I told the story of the computers we did for the pandemic. I've posted our latest effort - which is a Christmas fair for under-privileged children. gofund.me/92db1219 Please allow me to tell you a little bit more about that if I may? 1/10
So we decided to put on a Christmas fair. There are so many children who won't have any kind of Christmas this year. Maybe it's sentimental but I think that is absolutely wrong. We want to do something for them. 2/10
We have been given premises by St. John's College at the University of Cambridge and the hall is amazing. We are going to transform it into a Winter Wonderland. 3/10
For those following the thread about the computers we did during the lockdowns, one girl contacted us and asked if she could borrow a laptop for two hours on a specific day for a dyslexia assessment for the Open University. 1/4
She had got her A levels, over coming dyslexia to do it, while caring for both her parents. She wanted to get into the Open University so that she could stay at home and do her degree, while working a job and continuing to care for her mum and dad. 2/4
She came to us to ask for a laptop for 2 hours and expected nothing. We went and got the best laptop we had, upgraded to the best spec we could, and we gave it to her to keep. 3/4
(apologies Twitter is about to die so it sent my last tweet series at tweet 12 for no reason whatsoever - please find that and start at number 1 for this epic and very true story)
We contacted the Department for Education - very proud of what we were achieving and the way forward. We could help the DfE with our learned experiences, and if they gave us a modest amount of funding, for absolutely no profit and with free labour, we would roll out more. 13/28
I underline - we told them NO PROFIT and NO LABOUR COSTS. They wrote back to us and thanked us for our effort in a patronising letter that said they couldn't help us and that they had this situation under control. 14/28
While this PPE scandal is erupting again I'll tell you a little story and it is absolutely and 100% true. Get yourself a cup of tea - this might be one of my threads.
I started a youth representation panel in 2016, I was a police officer. 1/
The purpose of the panel was to improve the relationship between young people and the police in a local area by amplifying young voices and giving the constabulary a consultation board to talk about youth policy and initiatives 2/
It was very successful. So it broadened out and gave support to other agencies and service providers, and began to represent a wider area of the county. 3/
