#INC1 hangover?

Here are the 10 things you need to know about the #Plasticstreaty first round of negotiations 🧵

❤️substantive discussion on objective, scope and structure
❤️ the objective will cover environment and health dimensions (and human rights)
❤️A clause for parties-non parties was suggested to be included

2️⃣ NEXT STEPS:
❤️ Mandate for UNEP to produce a compilation of elements for a #plasticstreaty based in #INC1 and written submissions
❤️No more multistakeholder forum eating💰&⏳of negotiations
💔Rule of Procedure 37 stills on brackets

3️⃣LEADERSHIP:
❤️ LAC region is a leader
- 3 actives members in the bureau
- 🫕 Moitié-Moitié formula for chairing the INC 🇵🇪🇪🇨 was accepted
-🇺🇾 nailed as a host country for #INC1
-🇵🇪🇪🇨 want to host the diplomatic conference
- 🇨🇴🇲🇽🇵🇪🇪🇨🇵🇦🇨🇷🇨🇱🇩🇴🇺🇾 are HAC members

4️⃣REPRESENTATION:
❤️~160 countries represented (against 119 for Minamata INC1)
💔 delegates were exhausted because of the COP27, CITES, etc
💔UNEP only funded 1 delegate per dev. country
💔 Fossil Fuel & petrochemical industry are supported in the negotiations with impunity

5️⃣ NARRATIVE
❤️Health aspect was strong element
❤️Great press coverage
❤️Willingness to cover plastic as materials & products, associated chemicals
❤️ Fossil fuel subsidies as drivers of the crisis
💔industry front groups blamed consumer behaviour and called for false solutions

6️⃣MOVEMENT:
❤️Indigenous peoples, surrounding communities affected by the petrochemical industry, wastepickers, youth, women,etc contributed to the discussions. But is not enough
❤️Scientists were pivotal to change the narrative and contribute to substantial and needed changes.

7️⃣ ❤️ Multistakeholder forum (MSF) seems to be dead ☠️
💔Few MS tried to weaponised MSF as a way to exclude observers of negotiation rooms
💔Inmoral to waste ~half million dollar in a MSF instead of supporting physical participation of developing countries

8️⃣ ❤️UN 🇺🇳🔝top chiefs called on UNEP & MS to guarantee boundaries and not conflict of interest & framed the discussion as a fossil fuel problem with climate, health,biodiversity and human rights impacts.

9️⃣ ❤️ 🇰🇪🇿🇦 launched the “Just Transition Coalition”, an group of friend with @globalrec_org to support waste-pickers during the negotiations and implementation of the #plasticstreaty
