It's #NavyDay today!! 🧵
Happy Navy day to those who served and those who are serving.
Navy is traditionally a mixture of extremes. It is the navy which won territories for the nations. Spain, England, Holland, Portugal, France and India were all successful colonial powers only+
because of their respective navies.
On the other hand, sailors - as against the navy - bring to mind fun and frolic. More than any group of people in the world, it is the sailors who are associated with deeds that usually gets shunted by the general conscience: +
Getting drunk at the slightest pretext in any bar or shack, engaging in brawls for no reason at all while there, rushing to the places where girls await with outstretched hands.

Indian Navy is different.

We dutifully send money home as soon as we get the salaries +
which automatically translates into not spending much on drinks or girls. Or, complete absence of these activities!

When young men join the Indian Navy, almost everyone of them is a complete ignoramus. About the only info they have on the navy is that the navy has ships in it.+
And, they are there not as proponents of any patriotism but as seekers of a way to earn their livelihood. A 16-18 year old boy cannot be full of nationalistic fervour. He is more likely to be filled with more practical thoughts like food, sports and girls.
However, as time goes+
-by, the Sailor becomes aware of things that go beyond food et al. His employment which was solely for his salaries in the beginning slowly gets transformsed into something more purposeful.

His individual fulfillment takes a more generalistic and a sharp focus.+
The country and the part he plays in its general welfare becomes an important part of him. He may be just a drop in the ocean that is the large set up called the defence forces but he is as important as the ocean itself. He is, isn't he?

The navy teaches him things+
he did not know existed. Parallely growing is a mature outlook on life itself. He knows he is in the navy not only to live but to die as well. Death is at the gangway! Like when it was when confronted by China and Pakistan.

Can you deny that it is the navy that prepares you+
for the life in a civilian milieu? Yes, you might have acquired knowledge that the navy had not provided, no denying that but the basic premise stays, isn't it?
On a personal note, I owe it to the navy all that have been and am now. My 15 years in the navy are the foundation for me, my life and my family.

Let's have a drink to that, cheers!

The first destroyer of India INS RAJPUT D141, an R class destroyer which was acquired in 1949 from Royal Navy (It also served in world war II as HMS Rotherham H09) During 1971 Indo Pak war Rajput was deployed in eastern coast to pretend as INS Vikrant to misguide +
Pakistani Submarine PNS Ghazi to keep her away from INS Vikrant. This ploy eventually led to downing of Pakistan’s pride PNS Ghazi.
That time India had three destroyers in same R class Rajput, Rana and Ranjit. Old INS Rajput was decommissioned in 1976 #IndianNavy. #NavyDay2022
In the early seventies INS Rana, Ranjit and Rajput used to be berthed near boat jetty/ pontoon. R-Class destroyers as the name suggests used to present a very scary look as pre-1971 conflict all naval ships were painted in dark grey while their chimney used to be black.

The Kiss of Death

26 years have passed since the bizarre incident but it is still afresh in the memory. In the blistering heat of May 99, in the middle of Kargil War, Lance Dafedar Hari Ram of Indian Army’s Armoured Corps was forward deployed somewhere in d mighty Thar Desert+
Thar Desert of Rajasthan. Hari Ram’s Sentry duty was till 12 o’clock, midnight. Those days, every soldier in the Desert carried a Desi water bottle made of thick cotton cloth – locally known as “मशक”. It kept the water cool. As the Sun set, the desert began to cool, Hari Ram and+
Hari Ram & the rest of the soldiers were joking & chit-chatting almost till midnight. Hari Ram’s “मशक” was hanging on the branch of a Khajri tree.

Laughing in the middle of a typical ‘Fauji Joke’ Hari Ram took the “मशक”, sipped a bit of water +

Let me narrate a true story: How the Life Savers called Military Doctors saves lives..
Dafedar Ram Lakhan from 41 Armoured Regiment (deployed in Rajasthan Desert) was bitten on shoulder by a highly vanomous Desert Krait Snake while sleeping in his tent in the wee hours of night.+ ImageImage
He was lucky as it was the time for sentry changing and two men proceeding to sentry post were awake and had torches with them. A panicky and worried Ram Lakhan informed them, "Mujhe kandhe pe kuchh kata hai."
The other Soldiers saw the bite marks, it was a definite snake bite.+
Their torchlight saw a snake roaming around in the snake pit surrounding the tent.
The snake had probably sneaked in the tent through some tree roots which were there around the pit.
Ram Lakhan was rushed to 184 MH at Suratgarh, Sriganganagar, Rajsthan in an emergency vehicle.+
