Argentina vs England (War)
Having some fun playing the new Falklands War DLC of Command Modern Operations #CMO, one of the best air & naval combat simulators out there.
Time is May 4, 1982, can I repeat Argentine Air Force's famous (or infamous) feat that day?
We know the history: Argentine AF, with just a few Super Etendards jets and Exocet anti-ship missiles (ordered 15 from France but only 5 delivered)
launched a daring attack on @RoyalNavy main fleet and sank HMS Sheffield, a Type 42 destroyer, to the horror of British public.
In CMO Falklands War DLC we are given the same limited assets as the Argentine commander had: 2x Super Etendards each with just 1x Exocet, facing Royal Navy armada TF 317.8 of 2 aircraft carriers escorted by a dozen destroyers and frigates, not to mention the Sea Harriers on CAP!
Recon first. At dawn I dispatch a P-2 Neptune maritime patrol aircraft to search for the RN fleet. Neptune's radar is the then already ancient AN/APS-20, but still gets the job done and located British TF 317.8 about 400nm off Argentine coast..
..which brings us another problem. To have any chance of penetrating British defenses our Super Etendards need to attack flying sea-skimming altitude but that would put us out of fuel range. I therefore dispatch a KC-130 tanker to refuel mid-way, as Argentines did historically.
The Super Etendards, piloted by Capt. Augusto Bedacarratz and Lt. Armando Mayora took off from Río Grande and soon reach 100nm within British TF 317.8. Fortunately British Sea Harriers on patrol seem to be far north and didn't see us coming otherwise this would have gone badly...
From here I set Super Etendards to fly at the lowest, sea-skimming altitude of 300ft. This is to take advantage of earth's curvature to avoid British ship radars and sneak up on them. Again, an important modern naval warfare concept one can learn from playing enough CMO!
At 30nm out, Argentine pilots quickly climb to higher altitude, open their Agave radars and.. Ooh la la! The whole British TF 317.8 is on their radar and they had only seconds to pick targets. Staying here any longer and they could be killed by British ships' SAM at anytime.
So they quickly fired off the precious 2 Exocets and turned back. Historically they targeted the ship on the outskirt - the HMS Sheffield. However here I selected the two contacts in the center, guessing those could be my top prizes - Brits' two carriers HMS Hermes & Invincible.
CMO, unlike real-world, assumes all ships and combat systems function 100% at any time. In this case it means my meager 2x Exocets have little chance of making through Brits defense as SAMs and CIWS easily chew them down almost every time until I reloaded/replayed the 8th time..
HIT! One Exocet made it through and struck a ship in the center! Which one could it be?
Historically Argentine pilots only learned the result of their attack later from newspaper. Since they had no safe way to conduct close battle damage assessment (BDA). With CMO however..
..I could simply switch to UK side with editor to see what happened. The lone Exocet struck the smaller RN carrier HMS Invincible! While the damage seems moderate, the hit evidentially took out many Sea Harriers and Sea King helos parked on the deck!
Obviously a hit on HMS Invincible would be even more rewarding vs sinking Sheffield for the Argentines as it could cripple UK fleet's air power and jeopardize the whole war, not to mention morale damage on the British public. Imagine the headlines on these British tabloids..
In fact Argentines later tried repeatedly to attack the British main fleet and two carriers but all failed as they ran out of the most potent Exocet missiles and had to resort to close up attacks with A-4s using unguided bomb! (came with heavy losses)
Nevertheless CMO gives us an interesting way to experiment with alternate history.
Finally here's an interesting article about the several Argentine A-4 attack runs on British fleet, telling from Argentine pilots perspective. It's worth a read!

Got to disagree. That's an insult to the PLA.
IJA/IJN were piss poor at force planning and built a clumsy war machine with ~50% Japan's GDP based on totally faulty intel. and assumptions about the US. For example this classic memo by Eizo Hori, a G2 officer at IJA General Staff..
Hori calculated an IJA division (師団) had only 1/3 the combined firepower of a US Marine division! No one at IJA General Staff realized this, and for years planning was done assuming 1 IJA div. = 1 US div, disastrous results ensued for the Japanese defenses across the pacific.
Suffice to say PLA today is NOT the IJA. Rather, IJA disfunctions bear all the hallmarks of Taiwan military today.
Did you know.. Chiang Kai-shek hired a bunch of former IJA generals, some really incompetent ones even, to "train" ROC army post-ww2?

Finland here is prepping what Taiwan should do seriously with 10x efforts but not doing.
TW Air Force bases/runways are certain to be massively bombarded (PLA DF missiles, WS rockets etc.) in the first hour of war. Its "dispersion" preps and exercises so far are a complete joke.
As I explained in this report for @NBRnews earlier, runways and air power destruction/incapacitation is the single point of failure in Taiwan's "defenses". A problem long identified and feared, but @MoNDefense and Taiwan leadership never took seriously.
nbr.org/publication/me…
Designated "dispersion runways" are just a few sections of *highways* across Taiwan that in normal time are insanely busy and congested with road traffic. MND dispersion "exercises" for PR show were all planned and prepped weeks/months in advance, traffic cleared out day before!

Bombshell today: Yu Tsung-chi, a ret. Taiwan Army general, said yrs back South Korea under Pres. Moon Jae-in sent a group to Taiwan to study feasibility of shortening Korea's conscription, appalling state of Taiwan's 4-month conscripts shocked them and quickly dropped the idea.
Specifically a group from Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA), a Korea govt think tank, was sent to Taiwan to observe @MoNDefense's conscript "training". During Yu's Korea visit sometime later KIDA ppl. revealed to them this was key in Moon govt. keeping the conscription.
Today's forum organized by Fair Winds Foundation featured Yu and other Taiwan defense experts inc. Chieh Chung. All gave pessimistic assessments regarding Tsai govt's claimed "plan" for re-extending conscription from 4-month to 1-year. Some don't think govt is even serious.

Did you know.. Cai Qi, a new (and arguably the least expected) China CCP Politburo Standing Committee member, visited Taiwan in 2012 and published a short diary?
Here are my takeaways from reading it so you don't have to: ImageImage
In 2012 Cai Qi was a local CCP official of Zhejiang province and visited Taiwan on a delegation. The diary was originally published on a @caixin blog, now deleted. Taiwan netizens backed it up, full text of which you can read it here in Chinese:

It is necessary to understand the background of this 2012 trip: Ma Ying-jeou was then Taiwan's president, China-Taiwan trade and ppl. exchanges were growing rapidly, Beijing was warm toward Ma's KMT govt (at least on the surface), a "honeymoon" period of cross-strait relations. Image

Deepest thanks to Mike and GMU @ScharSchool for the opportunity to share with US folks. Beside the video I will also share my presentation here for those interested.
Per our poll Taiwan public did not buy into govt's PR narrative that we are "learning lessons from Ukraine". ImageImage
Ukraine, incl. its political leadership post-Maidan committed to military reforms and transformation which I argued is what enabled it to fight effectively against Russians this year (though at immense costs). That commitment does not exist in Taiwan's leadership today. Image
Taiwan Navy in 2022 has 26+ major surface combatants and *zero* VLS launcher, heavily outdated, no significant update nor replacement in sight. Standard maneuver calls for egress out of ports to the Philippines Sea, where they will be swiftly attacked and destroyed by PLA. ImageImageImage

What's Taiwan military's "reserve" training really like?
I finished my military service a decade ago as an army corporal. As a reservist I got called up by @MoNDefense last month for a week long training. Here's what I saw. Buckle up and be prepared to.. be disappointed. 1/
You will have to excuse the lack of photographic evidence since smartphones are taken away from reservists right at the gate. Strictly enforced. You'd think it's about "security", in reality it's more to do with MND wanting to avoid embarrassing photo from getting out. 2/
You will notice my training cohort was only 7 days. The much-hyped "new 14-days reserve training" was just a PR clown show made for Pres. @iingwen and her band of sycophantic press (including some foolish foreigners) to pump fake news about "Taiwan revamps reserve training". 3/
