2022 was the most important year for climate action in U.S. history.
The IRA was signed into law. @POTUS took numerous climate actions. But we can't meet our climate goals without state action — and that's exactly what happened in 2022.
THREAD of state clean energy wins 🧵👇
California led the charge on electric vehicles and climate funding, instituting the nation-leading Advanced Clean Cars II rule that requires all new cars sold after 2035 are electric 🚗
The state's last budget also included an unprecedented $54 billion to combat climate change.
Colorado continued to raise the bar for methane emission protections 🌎
✅ Adopted rules that nearly doubled oil and gas extraction site inspections
✅ Tightened standards for methane leaks
✅ Changed well clean-up rules to ensure companies cover costs
Connecticut officially committed to 100% clean electricity ⚡
The state codified a goal previously set by @GovNedLamont in a 2019 executive order — zero-carbon electricity statewide by 2040 — one of the most ambitious targets in the country.
Maryland set nation-leading climate goals 🌎
The state passed legislation this year to reduce emissions 60% by 2031 — the strongest near-term goal in the U.S.
Maryland also created a first-in-the-nation mandate that school buses purchased after 2024 be zero-emission. 🚌
In Michigan, @GovWhitmer released the MI Healthy Climate Plan that commits to:
⚡ Achieving 60% clean energy by 2030
🌎 Retiring all coal plants
🚗 Building charging infrastructure for 2 million EVs by 2030
⚖️ Allocating 40% of climate funding to disadvantaged communities
In Minnesota, @GovTimWalz announced his Climate Action Framework, laying out the state’s vision to achieve carbon-free energy by 2040 and invest at least 40% of state climate-related funding in disadvantaged communities. ⚖️
In Wisconsin, @GovEvers released the state's first Clean Energy Plan, laying a path to reach carbon neutrality, including working closely with local tribes, investing in clean energy workforce development and job training, and creating an estimated 40,000+ new jobs by 2030. 👷
Thanks to policies passed on the state and local level in 2022, 40% of people in the U.S. now live in a place dedicated to 100% clean energy.
Combined with the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act on the federal level, the clean energy future is very much here ⚡
15 states have now officially committed to 100% clean energy — and 31 states have active #CleanEnergyForAll campaigns.

In 2019, the Select Committee was tasked with combating the climate crisis.
In today's final hearing, @ClimateCrisis lays out congressional successes and needed action to transition to a clean energy future and improve community resilience. 🧵

@ClimateCrisis Honoring late @RepMcEachin with a moment of silence, Chair Castor said: “In Congress, he changed the conversation on climate change. Environmental justice was at the heart of his work.... I trust that his example will inspire all of us to be faithful public servants.”
In her opening statement, Chair @USRepKCastor lays out the importance of bold action.
"Our work remains urgent. Climate disasters are putting America’s security and stability at serious risk, and threatening our economy, our way of life, and our communities."

@POTUS 🌎 Biden administration to give $75M to Native communities threatened by climate change
"It gave me goose bumps when I found out we got that money. It will mean a lot to us,” said Joseph John Jr., a council member in Newtok, a village in southwest Alaska. nytimes.com/2022/11/30/cli…
#WVvEPA is a Supreme Court case about the @EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act.
SCOTUS already ruled that the EPA can and *must* regulate climate pollution, but extremists have captured SCOTUS, putting our planet at stake.
@EPA If SCOTUS sides with the West Virginia plaintiffs — who are arguing that Congress has not given the EPA authority to take action against climate change — it could hamstring not only the EPA, but other federal agencies that protect us from powerful corporate interests. #WVvEPA
HAPPENING NOW 📣 @RepJoeNeguse is over on our Twitter handle to discuss how clean energy wins in his home state of Colorado can serve as a model for policies at the national level.
Hi! This is @RepNeguse 👋 tweeting with LCV to talk about #CleanEnergyForAll in Colorado and across the country.
This is a core issue for me: before taking office, I co-founded the non-profit New Era Colorado to engage youth efforts to #ActOnClimate using clean energy solutions.
In Congress, I am proud to serve on the Select Committee on the @ClimateCrisis and be a member of the climate action based caucus @SEEC. We listen to people across the country who are affected by climate change and develop legislative solutions to tackle the climate crisis.
Climate change deserves serious time during the #DemDebate in Detroit. We face an urgent crisis and candidates must tell us how they plan to #ActOnClimate.
