In 1526, the Mongol/Uzbek king of Kabul, Zahiruddin Babur, invaded India and after defeating the Lodhis, established Mughal rule in India.
In 1527, the temple was demolished by a Mughal General, Mir Baqi, and a masjid was built. It was given the name, Bahri masjid, in honor of the new conqueror of India.
The Mughal dominance of India ended in 1707, after the death of Aurangzeb. However, there was a nominal emperor in the Red Fort till the British Crown formally terminated the Mughal rule in 1858.
The Hindus never gave up their claims on the holy site and in 1859, after the British took over, they built a wall at the site. Hindus prayed from one side while Muslims prayed from the other side. Since then, Hindus have been offering prayers at the site.
In 1885, a Hindu maranta asked for permission to build a temple on the site but his plea was denied
In 1992, L K Advani of the BJP spearheaded a political campaign by conducting a rath yatra demanding the construction of a Ram Temple at the holy site.

In spite of conducting a campaign for the construction of a temple, he did not ask for the demolition of the mosque nor did he make inflammatory speeches that sought to incite communal violence.
On December 6th, 1992, a mob converged on the site and demolished the mosque.
Charges were framed against Advani, Joshi, Kalyan Singh and others of conspiring to demolish the mosque and inciting communal violence.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that site belonged to the Hindus and that the demolition of the Bahri Masjid was unlawful. As compensation for the loss of the masjid and not of the site, the Supreme Court awarded a piece of land measuring 5 acres.
Coming to the present case, the CBI court found
no evidence of a criminal conspiracy to demolish the mosque

Hence, it acquitted all the 32 persons accused of all charges.
