Ha. Twitter have updated old verified accounts to have this message."They may or may not be notable". Presumably this wouldn't be that hard to figure out based on their data 🤣
This is one man's policy btw. So you could translate it as "person Musk may or may not have thought was cool". #twitterverified
Only appears to effect Twitter mobile atm
Should add that this appears to only affect twitter mobile atm
To be fair to Musk and Tesla - they may or may or not be notable too

🧵 Some stats on British media coverage of #Qatar2022; Only about 3% (492 of 15000) of all headlines in the period between Russia being awarded the World Cup and its hosting were actually about the sporting event, while with Qatar it is 40% (685) newarab.com/opinion/uk-pre…
A topic analysis reveals that the top 5 most common topics in all articles about Qatar are: 1) worker rights and human rights 2) sports 3) the 2017 Gulf Crisis 4) corruption and bribery 5) aviation.
Except for the key terms ‘Qatar’, ‘FIFA’, and ‘World Cup’, the most common term in any headline article about Qatar was ‘workers’, referring exclusively to the conditions faced by mostly construction workers building infrastructure in Qatar.

Just a heads up if anyone sees a story about Qatar bribing Ecuador 7.4 million to lose the opening game - it started here from a well-known disinformation account who is somehow also the main source in the story @amjadt25 . It's already got thousands of RTs though
Ahh now it's spreading into Spanish
Amjad tagged daily mail in his first tweet - now some random dodgy looking Spanish sites are reporting that the "Daily Mail" reported this story

Some comments in @dw_sports "Since 2010, there has been a consistent narrative about labor abuses in Qatar and the wider Gulf region, which obviously do occur. It's a very real problem," Jones told DW.
"But it meant that, when it came to the 6,500 figure, people were somewhat primed to be receptive to that. And when you mention it in the context of the World Cup, people assume that it must be stadium related."
If Jones considers such (mis)interpretations "common-sensical," he has less understanding for The Guardian's initial choice of headline.

"6,500 is a big number which otherwise barely makes a splash in the rest of the article," he said.

1/ Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, a surge in hate speech has been reported. I can't speak to this, but an #antisemitic hashtag "The Noticing" suddenly picked up, although this was probably more to do with @kanyewest's reinstatment on Twitter Image
2/ The hashtag 'The Noticing' is being used to promote antisemitic conspiracy theories and tropes, often posted as memes. Below you can find some examples. I counted around 36000 tweets from a 3 week period (26 - October - 16 Nov). ImageImageImageImage
3/ The acceleration of the hashtag coincided with @kanyewest's re-appearance on Twitter on 28th October after weeks of being suspended for antisemitism. For context, Musk entered Twitter with the sink on 26th October. As you can see, the trend picked up on 28th Image

I missed this piece. Very interesting quotes on white saviourism re LGBT community in Qatar "LGBT Qataris are calling on foreigners visiting the Gulf nation, which is hosting this year's World Cup, to think twice before speaking up or protesting on behalf of their human rights."
"He and other LGBT Qataris pointed out the Gulf nation was not a democracy and a "protest will result in nothing, you'll have to overthrow the government," to enact change."
Dr. Nas Mohamed added: "His followers [Tatchell] now have this impression that we're all this helpless people, that we're just waiting for him to show and stand up to our government"-

1/ Yesterday a couple of news channels, including @ESPNFC reported on a #Bundesliga game where people unfurled a flag in protest of the Qatar World Cup. It said '15,000 deaths for 5,760 minutes of football - shame on you”. This is a history of where that 15000 figure came from
2/ Firstly, the 15,000 figure comes from Amnesty. It's the total number of deaths of all non-Qataris of all ages and all causes between 2010 and 2019 - not excess deaths. This mortality rate actually is quite low. See this thread >
3/ The 15,000 number originated in around August 2021, in this important report about poor death reporting and failing to investigate unexplained deaths. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
