Two medical appointments to measure co2 & rebreathed air this week - in the middle of a surge 😬 one good result, one bad
Firstly, specialist appointment in office in St Vincent’s intensive care department.
Before we get to co2 reading, noting that on entry visitors to hospital are offering both trident n95/p2 masks & surgicals - last visit it was only surgicals
My uni age daughter on her own as we judged it too risky for me to accompany her this week. She’s asked to remove her n95 & replace it and asks the receptionist if she can layer it instead. Receptionist confused, insists she wants her to exchange.
My brilliant, bold daughter asks politely if she can take the new mask outside into fresh air and exchange there. Receptionist has 💡 moment & says stick the new mask in her pocket just in case, she’s fine in her own mask = win!
Everyone masked in hospital, mix of n95s & surgicals, some areas n95s mandated
In empty waiting room, co2 monitor registered 715 which isn’t terrible but not great. However, five mins later it dropped to 559 which I think indicates a system kicking in & pumping fresh air in
In her specialist’s tiny office it was 631 which is a relief as he was only wearing a surgical mask 🙄 as he took her blood pressure etc
Daughter noted a lot of alarms going off in the busy hospital
Next day’s appointment, another specialist, another tiny office - this specialist has consistently worn n95/p2 masks & just as well she does as reading not good 😳 1799
Will write to her & let her know the danger she’s in - she has a window to open so it could be an easy fix 👍
I am more convinced than ever of the value of measuring the CO2 in the air we breathe. Knowledge is power to make safe choices & we can not only inform & protect ourselves but also others
V keen to get a co2 monitor lending library up to inc & protect more people
🧵 we are living in an Orwell novel come to life but maybe it’s not 1984
These are Orwellian times, usually 1984 comes to mind with its doublethink & reframing of reality but this photo always gives me Animal Farm vibes
Let me explain
I’ll begin at the end
“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”
Now replace pig with Labor and man with Lib
“The Australians outside looked from Labor to Lib, and from Lib to Labor, and from Labor to Lib again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”
proportionate to what? Umm 🤔
To data we don’t collect?
Tests we don’t do?
Deaths we don’t acknowledge?
How much we smash hospitals/ HCWs?
% of workers chronically disabled by Long Covid?
Or our need to keep workers working? 🤔 ah, there it is ✅
“Promoting & creating an environment that mitigates pandemic fatigue”😵💫
Our creative tools 🧰 Minimisation, gaslighting, misinformation, absence of public health info, “Covid is over/mild/just like the flu/necessary” etc
Plus NO protections pls, remember you’re fatigued 🥱
Back in 2020 the wise & prescient @NjbBari3 posted about worrying similarities between Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) & Covid, I googled it, found the idea terrifying & never forgot it
FIP is a viral disease of cats caused by certain strains of a virus called the feline coronavirus (FeCV). Cats infected usually don’t show symptoms during the initial viral infection, but may occasionally experience brief bouts of diarrhea and/or mild upper respiratory symptoms
In approximately 10 percent of cats infected with FeCV, one or more mutations of the virus can alter its biological behavior, resulting in white blood cells becoming infected with virus and spreading it throughout the cat’s body. When this occurs, the virus is FIP.
“At the end of the day, that was the deal that we did, that was the agreement that we had”
“And you also gotta .. you can’t have this discussion without at least some regard for what % of the community would follow rules today if they hadn’t come off or if they were reimposed”
“.. you have to … this is not an academic exercise, people have thresholds, people have limits. There is now and previously a great hunger to get back to something like normal”
This answer raises more questions, but unfortunately they’d cut off @SofiaAnnieW by this point
I will try to remain civil and calm so I can explain why, but I feel shaky with fury right now
Why?
I am friends with some of the most precautious, at risk people in Australia
They don’t have luxury of pretending the pandemic is over as it’s an existential threat to them & their families
They’ve sacrificed much over the last nearly 3 years to protect their health & families
By learning everything they can about Covid transmission
By investing hard earned $ (none are rich) into every protection they can access - from hepa air filters to n95/p2 masks to co2 monitors to nasal sprays & CPC mouthwash
