Ensuring all people have access to clean water is the foundation of our work at @EPA.
I was in McDowell County, West Virginia this week — a community with just 19,000 residents — that has felt the impacts of inadequate and failing water systems for decades. #JourneytoJustice
Many residents rely on straight pipes that discharge raw sewage directly into their yards or into local bodies of water. And too many lack reliable access to clean, safe drinking water.
Even with these challenges, community members in McDowell have remained resilient and resourceful and have come up with innovative ways to make up for a lack of resources.
But here’s the reality: no one in the United States should have to live with the challenges of raw sewage in their yard. No American should have to worry about the safety of the water they drink.
Thanks to @POTUS@SenCapito@Sen_JoeManchin, EPA is making historic investments in our water infrastructure through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law — with $83 million awarded for West Virginia, just this year alone.
We’re going to build a future where our water infrastructure is resilient.
Where all children across this country can play outdoors in their own communities, without fear of hazard or harm.
Where wastewater everywhere is safely collected, treated, and reused.
Igiugig is a remote indigenous Alaskan village, with a population of less than 100 people.
The name Igiugig means “like a throat that swallows water”, referencing the location of the village at the mouth of the Kvichak River and Lake Illiamna. #JourneytoJustice
Started off our day by having traditional lunch with residents of Igiugig.
Igiugig faces concerns like energy generation and solid waste management, but the community worked together to create community-based solutions to address these challenges. #JourneytoJustice
I saw a hydrokinetic clean energy project, funded by @ENERGY, that produces zero-emission electricity for the local community – showcasing just how far @POTUS’ investments in America can go. #JourneytoJustice
Every day, I come to work with the goal of protecting people and the planet. And over the past 2 weeks, EPA has moved further and faster than ever before to do just that.
Here’s what we’ve been up to… 👇🏾
I traveled to Clayton, NC with @RepWileyNickel to announce funding for critical water infrastructure. Under @POTUS’s economic plan, we’re getting unprecedented investments in clean water to communities that need them most. wral.com/story/epa-anno…
Under @POTUS’s leadership, this Administration is delivering real results for real people. #SOTU
Over the past 2 years, I’ve traveled across the country and met with people on the frontlines of our most pressing environmental challenges.
I’d like to tell you about them… 🧵
I met Karen in Toledo the day her lead service line was being removed. Decades earlier, she bought her home after being (falsely) told it wasn’t connected to any lead pipes. It was an honor to be there as she finally accesses safe, clean drinking water.
Merle manages the wastewater treatment plant in West Salem, a small rural community in Wisconsin. Rural water systems face unique challenges, and this plant received $7 million from EPA to begin long-overdue upgrades to ensure clean, reliable water for residents.
The fisheries here are vital economic engines — supporting 15,000 jobs and generating $2.2 billion in 2019 alone.
And for thousands of years, the watershed has been a source of sustenance and culture for the 25 Alaska Native communities who call Bristol Bay home.
After extensive review, we determined that certain discharges associated with developing the Pebble deposit will have unacceptable adverse effects on salmon fishery areas.
The Inflation Reduction Act is going to transform our work to reduce climate pollution in every way possible.
Here are 5 ways this law will make people's lives healthier 👇🏾
📉 #1 - We're going to reduce greenhouse gas pollution from every sector of the economy by about 1 gigaton (that's a billion metric tons) in 2030
💰 #2 - We're going to invest billions of dollars in community-driven solutions to address the disproportionate pollution and climate impacts facing overburdened neighborhoods
The Inflation Reduction Act just passed the Senate! This is a big deal for all people and our planet.
🧵 Here’s how this bill delivers for Americans across the country👇🏾
🌎 Tackle our biggest climate challenges
With this legislation, @EPA will invest billions in deploying zero-emission technologies. It reduces greenhouse gas pollution and supports our fight to reduce climate change impacts.
🏡 Help families and communities
The Inflation Reduction Act will save families an average of $500 a year on energy costs. It supports EPA’s work to clean up air pollution around schools, reduce emissions from trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, and clean up the air around ports.
