#IShareYourAir gym edition

Yes, it’s possible to go to the gym safely in a pandemic

My youngest daughter goes to a large, multi-room gym …

… at 4am 😯

yes, seriously
She usually gets most of her session alone & will tolerate one other person (usually swaps rooms to avoid them) & automatically leaves if a second person arrives or if she hears a cough or sneeze
She wears her @flo_mask always, yes even if exercising alone b/c someone could have been in before she got there & left their breath behind.

She takes a portable hepa unit with her & uses enovid nasal spray & CPC mouthwash before & after
But what about the air quality?

When she first arrived, alone in the building, she measured a reading of 634 which is fine ✅

But an hour later and with another person exercising in the building …
… what’s interesting is it went down 😮 to 552 🤔

This likely indicates ventilation system kicking in & refreshing the air

& is rather reassuring ✅

Will def continue to use @AranetIoT to measure indoor air quality & make informed choices to protect ourselves

🧵 pandemic cautionary tales - the boy who cried wolf

Everyone knows the fable - bored shepherd boy cries wolf, repeatedly fooling villagers that a wolf is attacking sheep. When a real wolf appears & boy cries wolf again, no one comes to help & sheep devoured by wolf
In our twisted version, “the experts who cried Covid”,

a small band of expert shepherds (with integrity), watching over their human flock cry “Help! a Covid wolf is injuring & killing the elderly of our flock!”
But the politician villagers look up disinterestedly and reply - “they’re old & of little value, hardly worth the bother” and go back to their cafe brunch.

Next day, the expert shepherds cry out “Help us please! Covid wolf is injuring & killing the vulnerable in our flock!”

🧵 20 Covid 🎄 protection thoughts

1. The more people who wear masks,
the more people will wear masks

2. Peer group pressure/fear of being different is a thing

3. If everyone wore masks in public indoors, u5 yo kids (not allowed to be vaxxed) would be significantly safer
4. More masks = less virus in the air in public indoor spaces

5. Many govts o/s provide free n95/p2 masks for all

6. If two people talking together are both wearing a well fitted n95/p2 mask, there is very little virus in the air
7. Only 4-5% of Australians up to date with vaccines b/c they wane after 120 days - it’s not just how many you’ve had, it’s how long ago. Are you less protected than you think?

8. Many govts o/s protect kids u5 with vaccines that Aus has approved but withheld from most children

🧵 we are living in an Orwell novel come to life but maybe it’s not 1984

These are Orwellian times, usually 1984 comes to mind with its doublethink & reframing of reality but this photo always gives me Animal Farm vibes

Let me explain
I’ll begin at the end

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”
Now replace pig with Labor and man with Lib

“The Australians outside looked from Labor to Lib, and from Lib to Labor, and from Labor to Lib again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

🤔 from Dom to Dan & Dan to Dom …

🧵 translating @AlboMP & Nat Cab’s

Strategic Framework for Transitioning COVID-19 Measures

It’s spinning so hard I’m getting dizzy 😵‍💫 just trying to read it

federation.gov.au/national-cabin…
“Proportionate” measures 😵‍💫

proportionate to what? Umm 🤔
To data we don’t collect?
Tests we don’t do?
Deaths we don’t acknowledge?
How much we smash hospitals/ HCWs?
% of workers chronically disabled by Long Covid?
Or our need to keep workers working? 🤔 ah, there it is ✅
“Promoting & creating an environment that mitigates pandemic fatigue”😵‍💫

Our creative tools 🧰 Minimisation, gaslighting, misinformation, absence of public health info, “Covid is over/mild/just like the flu/necessary” etc

Plus NO protections pls, remember you’re fatigued 🥱

Update on #IShareYourAir Car Edition

Earlier this week I showed the significant difference between no fan/windows up and 2 windows cracked

Someone reached out and asked me to check on fan settings and I was happy to oblige as it’s fun to experiment 👩‍🔬
Same set up as before - same 2 people in same car

Started with air conditioning on, set to recirculate & windows up & …

omg 😱 sorry for pic quality, that’s 6454 😳 I think that’s equivalent to breathing approx 12% backwash 🤮

This is > DOUBLE the no fan at all reading 😬
Do NOT - I repeat - DO NOT drive around with air con set to recirculate - it’s just a terribly unhealthy reading - the worst I’ve ever measured myself

I quickly changed fan setting to bring in fresh air from outside & within 20 mins it dropped & stabilised at a v respectable 540

🧵 #IShareYourAir the medical edition

Two medical appointments to measure co2 & rebreathed air this week - in the middle of a surge 😬 one good result, one bad
Firstly, specialist appointment in office in St Vincent’s intensive care department.

Before we get to co2 reading, noting that on entry visitors to hospital are offering both trident n95/p2 masks & surgicals - last visit it was only surgicals
My uni age daughter on her own as we judged it too risky for me to accompany her this week. She’s asked to remove her n95 & replace it and asks the receptionist if she can layer it instead. Receptionist confused, insists she wants her to exchange.
