Thomas Joseph of @IENearth says Nature-Based solutions is a PR scheme that lets polluters purchase carbon credits and make dubious net zero claims--it's the legacy of colonial power
We need a systems change, NBS is commodifying our Mother Earth and accessing the land of indigenous peoples who protect and defend our biodiversity. FPIC is essential
NBS is a term used to justify large scale land and resource grabs, and govts are working with private sector to position themselves as fighting climate change, but NBS invites corporations into unseated indigenous territories
With the fancy name, NBS is commodifying indigenous practices, and there's a big difference between the real solutions of indigenous peoples and NBS, which is a continuation of capitalism and colonialism
Mirna Fernandes of @GYBN_CBD: We represent the voices of youth at #COP15. We're very worried about 'Nature-positive solutions' - a term that's misleading because it's a false solution based on creative accounting
Mirna Fernandes: Offsetting has a lot of problems. We're not comparing carbon with carbon, we're comparing ecosystems that aren't comparable. The ecosystems are not replaceable or fully restoreable
Mirna: Transformative change means rights-based approaches and justice at the center of the framework, and concepts that speak to OUR communities, promoting the integrity of ecosystems. Respect for life is the most important target. We need real solutions now!
Nele Marien of @CBD_Alliance: Nature-based Solutions is solutions for what? It's a climate concept but at the CBD we don't need nature to be a solution for nature. Biodiversity is being put at the service of climate offsetting in favor of industries
Nele: NBS and nature-positive--what does "nature" mean here? Monoculture tree plantations? Technological processes like geoengineering? These aren't natural at all. Can't compare it with biodiversity. Net concepts are flawed
Nele: There's a complete inconsistency in the plans of the CBD and UNFCCC, they're problematic in terms of environmental integrity and impacts on the ground for indigenous peoples and others
Marinda from Samoa representing @GYBN_CBD: For us, biodiversity loss is an impact of climate change and globalization, and communities have mistakenly supported the Nature-based solutions pushed on us
Marinda: We're observing all that's going on, and in regards to NBS and nature-positive, we need to stop believing that this is achievable. We need action, we need rights-based approaches and justice. We need COP15 outcome to be useful &achievable, to really conserve biodiversity
