(1) NEW: I'm pretty convinced now the new motto from @wmataGM is "Service Trumps Safety." Again today, #wmata showed they learned nothing from Carol Glover's death & sent passengers towards an actual fire they were warned about. (more)
(2) @NTSB recommendation be damned (attached), Metro now is back to rolling the dice & sending passengers towards smoke reported by their own workers. The following is what @wmata & @dcfireems radio traffic clearly shows this evening at Metro Center. (more)
(3) 6:02 pm: Metro Center station manager reported smoke along the third rail on the lower level (Blue/Orange/Silver). Following this report, the Rail Operations Control Center did NOT stop any trains. (more)
(4) Instead of believing a @wmata employee, ROCC kept asking train operators if they saw anything at Metro Center. ROCC also asked the station manager if they need the fire department? Why does that question need to be asked? Smoke confirmed, send fire department! (more)
(5) 6:07 pm: @dcfireems is dispatched.

6:09 pm: ROCC fire liaison told DC Fire&EMS it was a train operator reporting sparks on the track (said nothing about the station manager confirming smoke). Reported cameras show nothing, 3rd rail power up & trains running normally. (more)
(6) 6:11 pm: ROCC fire liaison update: @MetroTransitPD confirmed debris/trash up against the third rail. In other words, a small fire.

6:12 pm: 10-minutes after their initial report of smoke, train service was finally suspended. (more)
(7) Let's translate what happened. A metro worker confirmed unusual smoke on the track. ROCC didn't want to believe him because it's inconvenient. So they waited 10-minutes until another metro worker -- from @MetroTransitPD -- said yes, there's smoke & a small fire. (more)
(8) A small fire killed Carol Glover in 2015, trapped & injured scores of others. A small fire panicked & injured another train full of people in 2000. These occurred because of the same actions Metro took today -- sending passengers toward reported danger ahead. (more)
(9) The last @wmatagm raised hell & toughened policies after STATter911 reported & @MetrorailSafety investigated 2019 & 20 cases where ROCC sent trains towards smoke reports. Under Randy Clarke reports of smoke seem to no longer be a cause for alarm. Good luck with that.
(10) To give you some more context here's something I wrote in March 2020. (more) statter911.com/2020/03/03/met…
(11) And here's reporting by @justingeorge about the same issues. washingtonpost.com/transportation…

(1) One of the more interesting aspects of Wednesday's @OUC_DC Roundtable was the testimony by 911 directors from @AlexandriaVAGov & @opcd911 (New Orleans) & a sales director for 911 software provider @RapidDeploy. Council members were a bit baffled why they were there (more)
(2) The roundtable's very clear stated focus was call-taking & dispatching, including examining "several recent calls in depth." The two 911 directors, 911 software salesman & two union officials were not prepared to speak about the topic. Their focus was Karima Holmes. (more)
(3) As council members noted, the testimony in support of acting director Karima Holmes was something they might expect to hear at a confirmation hearing, which this wasn't. Watch this exchange between @charlesallen & DC native @tmorris911nola from @opcd911. (more)

(1) "The blogger" got a lot of mentions at yesterday's @OUC_DC Roundtable. Union rep Debbie Knox said her members want to know how to shut down "the blogger". Don't want to be paranoid, but I think Ms. Knox is talking about me. Watch in the next tweet & you be the judge. (more) Image
(2) WATCH: Knox is with NAGE Local R3-07. A significant portion of her testimony focused on the negative image of DC 911 that she blames on "the blogger" & the news media. (more)
(3) @charlesallen tried to determine if Knox thought "the blogger's" reporting wasn't accurate. Knox said "I do not feel we should be depicted negatively in the blog & the media." (more)

(1) Yes @ClohertyWTOP. Anytime I work on a DC 911 story I think of Maria Shepperd. She was 13 years old when she called 911, did CPR on her mom & was told help was on the way. It wasn't. 2 years later & the city's handling & reaction to the latest incidents seem to rhyme. (more) Image
(2) Despite 5 months of the city refusing to talk about @OUC_DC sending @dcfireems to the wrong address, @MayorBowser was not prepared to answer questions about the Shepperd case when @RamirezReports & @SegravesNBC4 questioned her after @Comm_Daily unearthed the 911 call. (more)
(3) Sheila Shepperd's June 2020 death was the 4th in less than a year. Now we are on number 10 in 3 years. Here's what's sill the same about these major @OUC_DC issues (besides @MayorBowser not being well briefed about a death where there was a significant 911 delay): (more) Image

(1) Despite the 5th death in 6 months where there were DC 911 delays @MayorBowser isn't issuing apologies or even acknowledging what happened. She's again making the reporter the issue. That's okay. I'm fair game. (more) @Janeese4DC @charlesallen @ODCA_DC Image
(2) Watch: "If you had Dave Statter that was trying to drive out another director, or pick a director in Arlington or Prince George's, you would find an equal number of instances where people have questions. I have no doubt about it." (more)
(3) Watch: @MayorBowser also told @MarielCarbone of @DCNewsNow: "When people call 911 often times they are very sick and sometimes there is nothing we can do to help." (more)

(1) A 911 call got lost & a 69 yr old man died waiting for DC 911 to find it. It took 3 calls & 11 mins before help was sent. Last month, a call was lost for 8 mins when an infant died. Just 2 of the 6 people to die in DC this year whose final moments involved 911 mistakes.(more)
(2) Last week, @MayorBowser called out "some people who are reporting on OUC". She says they're cherry-picking these bad stories from all the good DC 911 does. She claims they're only interested in mistakes at OUC & with its acting director & not mistakes in other people. (more)
(3) If you're in charge, it's natural to be upset with a reporter who uncovered mistakes surrounding 10 deaths in 3 years. But is the problem really with the reporters & reporting or is it how the 911 center is managed? (more)

@tomsherwood @VSPPIO @ArlingtonVaFD @VaDOTNOVA @ARLnowDOTcom @politicshour (1) @VaDOTNOVA is making a series of changes that will & has reduced the numbers but my observation from watching this for a while is that short of getting rid of the S curve with a left exit at the end of it the problem isn't going anywhere. Most of it is driver behavior. (more)
@tomsherwood @VSPPIO @ArlingtonVaFD @VaDOTNOVA @ARLnowDOTcom @politicshour (2) We have so many selfish drivers who think they don't share the road with anyone else. They think nothing of making a left turn on an interstate highway to get to their exit rather than go to the next one. (more)
@tomsherwood @VSPPIO @ArlingtonVaFD @VaDOTNOVA @ARLnowDOTcom @politicshour (3) Adding flex posts to the gore has reduced numbers but I see drivers make the move constantly. The remake of the Boundary Channel exit this yr will also reduce the amount doing it but there are plenty coming from before then (DC, GW Pkway) who wait until the last second (more)
