🇭🇺Hungary, probably the closest partner of🇷🇺Russia in🇪🇺EU is seeking to diversify its gas imports away from Moscow.
In doing so🇭🇺has reached out🇶🇦Qatar, world's largest LNG producer, amidst #WorldcupQatar2022 and the worst🇪🇺EU Parliament corruption scandal.
🚨That's terrific!
🧵
Yesterday🇭🇺foreign minister Szijiarto has announced that🇭🇺has agreed with🇶🇦to initiate talks between state-owned companies (🇭🇺MVM🇶🇦QatarEnergy) about importing LNG.
"It is in Hungary's interest to draw in new sources into its gas supply," but the deal should "make business sense"
🇭🇺is almost completely reliant on Oil&Gas imports from🇷🇺
In Sept-21,🇭🇺🇷🇺signed a long-term agreement for 4.5 bcm/y. Gas flows from🇷🇺across🇹🇷Turkey🇧🇬Bulgaria &🇷🇸Serbia before reaching🇭🇺.
Desperate for gas through this winter,🇭🇺agreed to buy additional 5.8mcm/d from🇷🇺this summer.
🇭🇺is an important🇪🇺consumer of gas, slightly less than 11 bcm/y in 2021, and heavily subsidised domestic consumption.
Storages are an important element of🇭🇺gas security. Now levels in🇭🇺are at 77.5%, only🇱🇻Latvia in🇪🇺has lower levels of gas reserves.
hungarytoday.hu/hungarian-hous…
But being a landlocked country🇭🇺cannot directly import LNG.
To do so, it needs to rely on gas interconnections within the🇪🇺& the neighbour🇭🇷Croatia.
🇭🇷Krk terminal has 2.9 bcm/y capacity, but🇭🇷wants to double it to 6.1bcm/ by 2026
(Map is from 2019 but shows🇭🇺🇭🇷interconnectivity)
Lately, the option of gas exports from🇩🇿Algeria flowing across🇹🇳Tunisia🇮🇹Italy &🇸🇮Slovenia to reach🇭🇺was discussed
Well, this is a paradox for one of the most nationalistic government in🇪🇺fiercely opposing sanctions vs🇷🇺for the sake of national interests.
dw.com/en/hungary-wha…
The bilateral negotiations between🇭🇺&🇶🇦could not come at a worse time.
A corruption scandal is shaking the credibility of the🇪🇺Parliament, with bags of💶possible influence peddling involving🇶🇦&🇲🇦Morocco
Reportedly, dozens of MEPs are under investigation
politico.eu/article/eu-lea…
🇪🇺elections come in 2024 and there is a fear that the🇶🇦scandal could discredit the institution even more,🔥inflaming anti🇪🇺sentiment & leading to a political disgregation of🇪🇺unity amid the worst international confrontation in decades, the raging energy crisis & surging inflation
This scandal is also an unforeseen obstacle for🇪🇺attempts to phase out🇷🇺gas imports.
🇶🇦wants to expand its LNG production and exports from 77 mtpa to 127 mtpa by 2026.
🇺🇸🇬🇧Western companies, including🇫🇷TotalEnergies &🇮🇹ENI are involved in the🇶🇦expansion.
Recently,🇶🇦🇺🇸companies
agreed to supply🇩🇪with LNG from🇶🇦for 15 years.
With the🇪🇺corruption scandal and police investigations going forward, other possible arrests, what could happen to the🇪🇺🇶🇦cooperation?
🇭🇺could play again its anti🇪🇺role and proceed with the negotiations with🇶🇦over LNG supplies...
however,🇭🇺needs🇪🇺gas network integration and interconnections with🇭🇷&🇸🇮to diversify its gas imports away from🇷🇺
Gas trade is a prominent affair in international politics and it should be studied for its political implications.
Meanwhile, someone at the Kremlin is smirking

🇩🇪Germany has failed for 2 consecutive weeks to save enough gas to respect the 20% demand reduction target, implemented to avoid possible winter shortages.
The🥶cold snap sweeping through🇪🇺EU boosted gas demand, weighting on the🇪🇺gas balance and the🇩🇪imperilled energy security🧵 Image
Numbers first.
Week 49 gas consumption was⬇️5% below the 2018-2021 average, says the🇩🇪Bundesnetzagentur. During Week 48, consumption was 13% below the 18-21 average.
This means 3.421 TWh/d during Week 48 and 3.24 TWh/d were consumed.

Russian crude oil is being shipped to India on tankers insured by western companies, in the first sign Moscow has reneged on its vow to block sales under the G7-imposed price cap.
At least seven Russian crude oil cargoes have been loaded on

to western-insured tankers since the price cap started on December 5, according to FT analysis of shipping and insurance records, despite President Vladimir Putin’s claim that Moscow would not deal with any country observing the cap.
Under the cap introduced this month,
buyers of Russian crude oil can only access western services such as insurance and broking, which are the bedrock of the global seaborne trade in oil, if they attest that they have paid less than $60 per barrel.
If Moscow is willing to let buyers ship its heavily discounted crude

Global coal consumption is set to rise to an all-time high in 2022 and remain at similar levels in the next few years if stronger efforts are not made to move to a low-carbon economy, a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Friday.
reuters.com/markets/commod…
High gas prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and consequent disruptions to supply have led some countries to turn to relatively cheaper coal this year.
Heatwaves and droughts in some regions have also driven up electricity demand and reduced hydropower,
while nuclear generation has also been very weak, especially in Europe, where France had to shut down nuclear reactors for maintenance. The IEA's annual report on coal forecasts global coal use is set to rise by 1.2% this year, exceeding 8 billion tonnes in a single year for the

China’s pivot away from Covid Zero is poised to boost natural gas demand in the world’s biggest importer, potentially curbing supply to Europe and other Asian nations.
CNOOC is now looking to secure more shipments of the super-chilled fuel for next year.
bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
The return to the market of one of the nation’s largest liquefied natural gas buyers follows a period of subdued demand, due to virus curbs suppressing economic activity, and may herald a rebound in imports.
Beijing’s move to reopen its economy and live with Covid-19 has seen
most internal restrictions being dismantled over the last few weeks. Provided that’s not rolled back as cases surge, that will increase the challenge for Europe next year as it prepares for the winter of 2023/24 with little or no natural gas from Russia.
Chinese gas imports are

A battle is raging in🇿🇦South Africa's energy sector
The CEO of🇿🇦’s struggling state power monopoly has resigned as the country suffers its worst ever blackouts, throwing into doubt efforts by President Ramaphosa to fix the collapsing energy supply
ft.com/content/ee4c6b…
André de Ruyter tendered his resignation from Eskom on Wednesday, the utility said in a statement, a week after a minister in the ruling African National Congress called on him to quit.
De Ruyter will remain chief executive until the end of March “while we urgently embark on a
search for his successor”, Mpho Makwana, Eskom’s chair, said.
South Africans have endured twice as many rolling blackouts this year as in 2021 with power cuts of up to 10 hours a day as ageing coal power plants have repeatedly broken down and newer replacements have malfunctioned
