🎬✏️ A student asked me this week what they can be doing now to expand their knowledge of the Film & TV industry to stand them in good stead for applying for roles when they finish their studies. It was a great question so here is a thread with some ideas 💡💡#filmjobs #tvjobs
📺🍿👀 Watch as much Film, TV & new media as you can. Here is a great article from @guardian on the best TV shows of 2022: theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2…. Pay attention to the credits and note who wrote/directed/produced the series you liked and look up what else they’ve made on @IMDb
📽️ For Film get to know the classics. Here is a list of the Top 100 Greatest Films from Sight & Sound: whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default…
🏆 Pay attention to awards season 🍂 Follow which shows/films have won at the @BAFTA @RTS_media @TelevisionAcad @TheAcademy @goldenglobes Awards and again make a note of the teams behind your favourites.
🍿To get on top of the most exciting upcoming film releases pay attention to film festivals which will have the most exciting film premieres. Here are just a few to note (but there are many more!): @BFI @sundancefest @TIFF_NET @berlinale @Festival_Cannes.
📚🎙️🎭 Read and listen to as much as you can. So much of Film & TV is based on IP these days (books, podcasts, plays etc). Have you read/listened to something you think could work well for screen? Think about why…
📚Get to know those classic novels: penguin.co.uk/articles/2022/… and also what’s new this year which might be ripe for adaptation: amp.theguardian.com/books/2022/dec…
✏️ Read scripts!!! The best way to learn how to be analytical about scripts is to read them. @bbcwritersroom has a brilliant script library which is FREE to access and has both Film & TV scripts available: bbc.co.uk/writersroom/sc…
📄 Learn how to write script coverage which will be an invaluable tool if looking for a job in Film or TV development or at a literary agency. Script coverage is a report that provides analysis of a screenplay or a piece of IP. studiobinder.com/blog/script-co…
🎙️Listen to industry and Film/TV podcasts. Some of my favourites are Script Notes by @clmazin & @johnaugust @BGGpodcast @BBCFrontRow @ScriptApart and Take by @KermodeMovie @simonmayo. 🗞️ Also keep on top of industry news at @DEADLINE @Variety @Screendaily @Broadcastnow
🧐 Get to know the Literary & Talent Agencies. Most agencies in the UK are signed up to The PMA which is a professional body for talent agencies. Research the companies and get to know them: thepma.com. Who/what do they represent…? The PMA also has a jobs board.
🧐 Get to know the Film & TV production companies making content in the UK. There are HUNDREDS. As I said before - always watch the credits to see who has made what you like! Here is an article from 2019 on 10 female led production companies to watch: screendaily.com/uk-in-focus/10…
📚There are also some great books on screenwriting, story and the industry out there such as Save The Cat! by Blake Snyder, Story by Robert McKee, The Mailroom by David Rensin, Into The Woods by John Yorke & Making Movies by Sidney Lumet. 📺📽️
If at school/university/college join the film & theatre clubs so you can gain experience of making theatre or producing films/talking about them. The student newspaper is also a great idea if you are able to write reviews and be critical about TV/Film. Or make your own podcast 🎙️
📄The above resources should hopefully be useful to mention when starting to write your cover letters. Make sure you tailor your letter to who you are writing to. Each one should be different! Write about what a producer has made that you liked, or the agents specific clients 📽️
⚠️ This is by no means a comprehensive list, but hopefully it’s helpful. Feel free to comment below if you have any more ideas👇💡

The question I get asked most at the unrepped writer surgeries I run for @50Comedy50 is how to go about securing representation. I thought it might be useful to share my response to that question here. All views are my own & based on my own experiences etc etc (see thread).
Be targeted in who you approach & do research. If you are a brand new it might be best to write to an assistant who is starting to build their list as they will have more capacity (that’s how I started out). That information might not be available online so you may have to dig!
I’d personally suggest initially targeting one person at each agency, as some agencies share their enquiries internally so if all of a sudden everyone has had the same email it might cause confusion.
