We're witnessing a fresh fracturing of news GATHERING and news DISTRIBUTION. Twitter's always been a tool for both. If your audiences and sources are scattering, here's a thread to help 1/
2/ Some of your key sources & audiences have fled to TikTok. @risj_oxford published a study & ran a webinar on how journalists are using TikTok, this week.
Big thread with study links:
Just want to watch the webinar:
3/ Some of your key sources and audiences have already fled to LinkedIn. Especially NGOs & local orgs frustrated with poor organic reach on Facebook. Meanwhile, many journos still not on it.
LinkedIn for Journalists: news.linkedin.com/media-resource…
4/ Recent @meta sackings included many ppl in news curation & partnerships. Facebook Blueprint courses for journalists are old / out of date. Head straight to Facebook for Business: facebook.com/business
(@Trushar are there other resources? DM and I'll add to thread)
5/ For Instagram - again, resources specifically for journalists have been wound down over the past couple years. They used to have an Instagram for Journalists landing page. You need:
Instagram For Business: business.instagram.com/?locale=en_GB
Instagram Reels Help: help.instagram.com/270447560766967
6/ One more resource from the @Meta stable is WhatsApp's new Announcement tool. I've joined @MattNavarra's group and bless him, it's fab. You can add up to 5000 people which is great for niche broadcast lists (excellent tool for NGOs & local communities): faq.whatsapp.com/582420703681043
7/ YouTube is strengthening its offering for journalists. Learn more:
a) What they're planning: blog.youtube/news-and-event…
b) @GoogleNewsInit's Creator site for journalists - free online courses: newsinitiative.withgoogle.com/info/youtube/c…
c) YouTube News blog: blog.youtube
8/ Regarding Mastodon - here's a guide I wrote, which is packed with other people's guides including one from @jeffjarvis, one from @pomeranian99, and many others. medium.com/@corinne_podge…
9/ It's worth signing up for Post.News. I've only just been added to the beta so am yet to learn it but here's a tutorial:
10/ Diverse audiences and sources may be using niche platforms to keep in touch. Talk to them to make sure you don't miss those conversations. Here's a blog post with 21 audience survey methods. Everyone should know how to run a survey! sociallysorted.com.au/survey-your-au…
11/ I know we're less than a fortnight from Christmas and after the last 3 years we all need this like a hole in the head, so I will end the thread with this. Feel free to reply with any tools / resources I've missed. /ENDS
@threadreaderapp unroll please
12/ Addendum - thanks to @Trushar for updating with more useful resources to help journalists use Facebook:

I've been asked 3 times this week by women entering the consulting space how to charge for consultancy services. A thread.
How do you decide what to charge? First, you're not doing the client a favour. You're helping them solve a problem. Your charge is partly based on what the client expects to pay for solving that problem. (You can always ask if they have a budget in mind. Most clients do.)
But you'll also need a personal rate, based on what you need to earn. Begin by researching what the *average* day-rate is for your sector and client location. e.g. average rates for an attorney in New York are $100-$300/hour. Next you need to refine *your* target / average rate.

Watching the launch of the report live right now with @rasmus_kleis. #dnr2021 #DNR21 Image
Interesting to see trust issues with politicians are more than twice as poor as with journalists. Also - willingness to pay for news STILL causally linked to TRUST. Big blockage to payment: wide availability of news for free. #journbiz #dnr2021 ImageImage
Respondents to the #DNR21 report say they want news to be factual, and to present a breadth of views rather than be partisan. Under-35 audiences want outlets to take a stand on specific issues, though, like climate change, says @nicnewman. Image

Great to hear @joonlau kicking off 3 days of the @WANIFRA_Asia Digital Media Leaders conference. Huge line-up, about innovation, product development, revenue diversification and more. #journbiz Image
1st #DigitalMediaAsia session: - Joe Kahn (@nycscribe), Managing Editor of @nytimes, in conversation with @garyliu of @SCMPNews - two giants of digital innovation and revenue diversification. As Liu says, online events supports global knowledge sharing like this. #journbiz
.@nycscribe says 2020 upheavals have driven engagement "beyond what we had witnessed in the past. And we were in a good position to harvest some of this because we've had some years of focusing on digital engagement." (See more: nytimes.com/2020/05/06/bus…) #DigitalMediaAsia)

1st speaker at @tasfreelancers conference starting now. is @marcus_bowles, looking at an issue of concern to every freelancer: The Future of Work. HIs argument is that "freelance is the new normal". More on that here: workingfutures.com.au/160620_newnorm…
We are also going to need more soft skills, and more people who are comfortable and experienced in working from home @marcus_bowles tells @tasfree, citing www2.deloitte.com/au/en/pages/ec…; and www2.deloitte.com/au/en/pages/bu…
If you are pivoting into the freelance market, then in the coming months / year, @marcus_bowles has this list of actions for @tasfreelancers, that you need to take. More from that source here: ibm.myinnergenius.com.

Just finished 3 x 3-hour Zoom lecture/tutorials for @Sydney_Uni Online Journalism students. Some learnings: 1) Online classes are TIRING for students and lecturers. Some of my students had 3 online lectures today. Go for sustained energy throughout, don't overload at the start.
2) It takes students time to switch their microphones on and off. Allow 10-15 seconds if you're asking someone a question. In a classroom they'd know you're talking to them immediately and respond but online takes that little bit more time and patience.
3) At the start of the lecture, I went through the slides to identify points / slides where I'd be asking questions, so they could really focus during those moments. NO ONE can maintain razor-sharp "will there be a test on this later?" attention for 3 hours.
