Once upon a time I was a recent immigrant to the US, working in a toxic environment for an increasingly abusive boss, who informed me I needed to work for free or they'd cancel my work visa & I'd have to leave the country. That was my glorious arrival here.
I'm aware there are people in Silicon Valley right now, as well as around the world in different industries, being held hostage by their immigration status, or in the US by their need for access to job-tied health insurance, or other factors. #Solidarity
I have also been working overseas when a family crisis at home coincided with a personal financial crunch, and I needed to get home but I didn't have the means to leave the country.
Life can be COMPLICATED. (And I've live through some wild things.)
I was a technical recruiter once upon a time. If I still was, I would be swooping in to help trapped people find good jobs at better companies. I hope internal & external recruiters are stepping up right now to do what you can.
(I'm all about random stories today, aren't I?)
I feel for the people trapped in bad situations, who have no options, who deserve better. I've been there too, far too many times than any one person should. You are so much in my heart. Stay safe & do what you need to do to survive.

I will really miss you all.
Please connect elsewhere with me if you can.
It would be my great delight to provide info & tech support to you in making your own contingency plans. That's increasingly difficult to do here, easier to do elsewhere, we'll find a way.
If I can help, hit me up.
Also, I'm not going to lie, I am looking at my third Christmas locked alone in this house, the pandemic has been rough, & I am exhausted at a level that's hard to convey. But... I'm guessing I've got maybe a week to help you get out. So let's make the most of it, hmm?
Here's a tip on dealing with bullies & tyrants: they will often make broad threats designed to make your censor/stifle/limit yourself out of fear of abritrary retaliation. They don't have to enforce edicts when you do yourself.
Make Them Work For It.
(cont'd)
Not everyone has the social privilege to risk facing retaliation from a bully or abuser, I know that.
But *if* you truly do, make them spend /their/ resources enforcing their arbitrary regulations. Push your luck. Waste their manpower. Clog up the system.
In an unfair, unjust, arbitrary system, creating more chaos clogs up retaliation systems & makes more space for vulnerable people to go unnoticed or at least buys them time.

I once woke up as a passenger in a vehicle, no memory of the past several hours, aware something had gone wrong, unaware I had a concussion, & needed to reconstruct events without alarming other or making a fool of myself.
Logging into Twitter has felt like that every day.
I'll only elaborate on that story to say A) my spycraft was on point, in that no one around me knew that I didn't know what was going on, and B) when I became aware that I was likely concussed, I discreetly sought out appropriate medical care (without alarming anyone).
I have spent far too much of my life in situations that I needed to retain control of & escalate appropriately while managing other people's emotions so they did not escalate the situation inappropriately or otherwise derail it. See also: "Special Skills" section of my CV. 😅
