Those beginning to look in from outside & try to figure out what all this #AfghanAdjustmentAct noise is about may notice us calling out certain senators. You need to know that from the beginning our @afghanevac@EvacOurAllies work has been devoid of partisanship. We don't 1/🧵
care what party affiliations we each have. For 17 months and counting we've just been working to uphold US promises to Afghans. This should give us all hope for America - it is completely possible to avoid the party fights tearing our country apart. 2/
We have been unified and willing to call out whichever elected official needs to be called out. This is about doing what's right. Not about politics. We are working to hold our govt to account for promises it made. We also particularly stand with 3/
the veterans in our ranks, for whom this battle to save Afghan allies is personal. These are people they served with. People who saved their lives. People they are bonded with by blood, battlefield blood. They are suffering. And we are also calling out 4/
elected officials as a way of having their backs. Of standing with our vets & service members. As we watch Congress avoid the issue, give silly excuses for not passing the #AAA, we see more wounds heaped upon American vets & Afghans vets. So it doesn't matter to us, 5/
which party is inflicting those wounds. We will call them out. And hold them to account. Because it's not ok for them to shirk responsibility and hide from doing what's right by so many people who put their lives on the line to keep America safe. 6/6
Addendum: Why would the very people who donned uniforms to protect the US be advocating for the #AfghanAdjustmentAct if it didn't keep US safer? Vets advocating for AAA were fighting terrorists. Of course they don't want terrorists in the US. Again, suggesting AAA can't pass 7/8
because there wasn't enough vetting post-evac is illogical. The vets & flag officers asking for the AAA should be trusted when they say AAA is good for national security. 8/8

Here's the thing about the #AfghanAdjustmentAct: The evacuation chaos that resulted in 10s of thousands of Afghans being rushed to the US w/o careful prioritizing of who should get on planes, is the fault of @POTUS. Reps & Dems are right to call out the admin over this. 1/ 🧵
However, by blocking the #AfghanAdjustmentAct, @ChuckGrassley is punishing the Afghans who have already been been punished by poor US actions. It's not their fault the evac was chaos. It does not make sense to further punish the victims of the chaos. 2/
As for the vetting @ChuckGrassley has hollered about, his complaints are nonsensical. 1-This bill requires another round of more intense vetting of any Afghans who request permanent residency. The vetting he wants IS IN THIS BILL. Faulty vetting of those who entered US 3/
A year ago tomorrow. I've still barely had time to process. That morning of the Abbey Gate bombing, one of my team's contacts asked for our help getting a female athlete through the gate. We thought she'd entered the airport the night before. 1/ washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
That morning French time, as my teammates in the US were asleep, we learned the athlete had been outside Abbey Gate for nearly 24 hours in the sun w/o water, since the TB had taken her backpack at the checkpoint. 2/
Our airport contacts had said they'd no longer be able to help by this time, but we had to try to get her through to her evac flight. My teammate awoke to my call because his daughter woke first & tossed a stuffed animal to wake him up. 3/
