this implies "cartoons should get rid of societally-defined gender presentation" & I dunno if the people saying it even realize it, cuz this is the same crowd that thinks identifying as male or female based on adherence to those societal norms is valid
no one complains Bugs Bunny doesn't look like a real rabbit. "realism" is a way to avoid acknowledging the main point of "making female characters girly & male characters masculine is bad" & the weird contradiction of disliking AND embracing gender roles
it's like when people pretend their issue with bikini armor is "realism" and not "female sexualization is bad in general". no one complains that Link takes out fully armored dudes basically wearing a skirt (or his pajamas given the start of LTTP)
and again when other cultures pick up these ideas they're not used to constant doublethink the way anglos are so they say the quiet part out loud. Russian feminists' #respectful_redesign tag was just a mask-off "cover up these harlots"

that said, the drawings are just very generically "dark". you know that bit in tezuka's alabaster where you see an elephant that had the raygun used on it? seeing a tezuka animal with its skeleton & innards exposed is way more unsettling than any of those drawings Image

why put swearing into a popular shonen to begin with? they absolutely wouldn't make Luffy say "fucking" but in Chainsaw Man I guess it's ok cuz it has more blood and stylistic traits that make it easier to pretend "uhm actually it's for adults only!"
hell I doubt subbers would put "fucking" into Kimetsu no Yaiba and that one is pretty gory. I suspect there's just something about Chainsaw Man's western fanbase that sees it as fundamentally different from other Shonen Jump series and I suspect it's about aesthetics
I guess a big part of it is the more realistic, down-to-earth, even "indie" vibe the art gives off, along with the character writing trying to be more realistic, which means "this HAS to be for 30something millennial hipsters"

ok gonna be honest this is a very good criticism of undertale. it's not really comparable to Metal Gear cuz Metal Gear is more just a "war is hell" story where the gameplay reflects the theme & not shitting on other media or even humanity itself
reminds me of the "villains" in the 60s star trek pilot saying "we tried to create a fake reality that'll make you genuinely happy & you still used your hate to break our conditioning & escape. you value freedom above peace & comfort; this makes you a dangerous and violent race"
except it didn't try to give easy answers or moral judgments over that & used it more as an exploration of human nature. one is a "campy 60s tv romp" & the other is considered such high art japanese people with tons of great rpg stories think it's a thoughtful masterpiece

thinking more about Japanese Higurashi fans doing the "IT'S CURRENT YEAR END THE OBJECTIFICATION" bit: even Ken Akamatsu's stuff isn't as "niche otaku" as Higurashi & a lot of his supporters are pretty normie authors. Negima ran in Weekly Shonen Magazine which has stuff like this
I wasn't being a "both sides centrist" in criticizing moe otaku. I genuinely think if you obsess over a fetishized male idea of female purity to the point where you fantasize about BEING that, you're relatively more likely to be be wimpy about stuff like social censorship. sorry!
I'm not saying that stuff is inherently bad at all either! I like some "moeshit" too. I defend the Maid Dragon manga & think there's genuine artistic merit there. but I do think over-focus on that can breed a passive wimpy attitude moreso than mainstream shonen culture

none of these people actually show serious drawing skill or understanding of the appeal of the stuff they hate on before dismissing it
remember the amount of hate code of princess' art got? even from /v/ types "uhhh not for political reasons bro it's just not realistic thus bad :)" and even after kinu nishimura came to be more well known people had to say "uhhh she was forced by evil men to do it"
people with zero taste trying to overwhelm artists who do have taste and take advantage of their niceness and humbleness to change their work according to their own shit sensibilities. why would people deserve nice things?
