In today's #vatnik soup I'll introduce a Russian right-wing politician and a raging spaceman called Dmitry Rogozin (@DRogozin).
Rogozin has also been very active on Twitter, threatening people from Elon Musk to former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly (@StationCDRKelly).
1/14
He was involved in Russian military activities already in 1990-92 in the Transnistria War, where he fought against the Moldovan troops. In 2002 became leader of the Rodina party, which was described by Anna Politkovskaya as a controlled opposition party ...
2/14
... "created by the Kremlin's spin doctors specifically [...] to draw moderately nationalist voters away from the more extreme National Bolsheviks." In 2003, Rogozin's far-right coalition (the real neo-nazis) won 9,2% of the popular vote.
3/14
In 2008, he became the Russian ambassador to NATO. From this position he criticized 🇺🇦's and 🇬🇪's NATO membership applications, stating that "They will not invite these bankrupt scandalous regimes to join NATO... more so as important partnerships with Russia are at stake".
4/14
On Dec, 2011, he was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the defense & space industries. He was one of the first people to be sanctioned by the US, Canada and the EU in 2014. After this, he tried to enter several countries by air but was refused access.
5/14
In May, 2014, he tried to enter Romanian airspace but was refused. He made a threatening tweet, stating that next time he would "fly to Romania on board a Tu-160 bomber".
6/14
In April, 2014 he tweeted that "I suggest to the USA to bring their astronauts to the International Space Station using a trampoline".Elon Musk replied to Rogozin in May, 2020, following the successful launch of Crew Dragon Demo-2 spacecraft, that "the trampoline is working".7/14
In May, 2018, Rogozin became the director general of Roscosmos, a state corporation responsible for 🇷🇺's activities related to space flights and aerospace research.During his leadership, he threatened with deorbiting of the International Space Station and landing it inside...8/14
... the US or in Europe. He also threatened to leave US astronaut Mark T. Vande Hei in space. He also published a video of Russians removing the US, UK & Japanese flags from a Soyuz rocket. Also, the Z symbol was taped into the launch equipment.
9/14
On June 13, 2022, Rogozin declared that Ukraine must be destroyed once and for all: "Let's put an end to them. Once and for all. For the sake of our grandchildren." On 15 July, 2022, he was released from his position at Roscosmos to "ease tensions".
10/14
During the last months, Dmitry declared himself as the leader of the "Tsar's Wolves" movement. This group allegedly tests and supplies weapons for the Russian troops in Ukraine.
11/14
He was criticized by Russian military bloggers when he posted an image of himself wearing expensive military gear that's mostly used by NATO troops.
12/14
Dmitry had a very unfortunate 59th birthday on 22, Dec, 2022. He was celebrating with his friends in a restaurant when the AFU shelled the place. As a result, Mr Rogozin got hit by a shrapnel, allegedly mutilating his genitalia.
Because of the complexity of the injuries, he could not be operated on-site and an attempt to transfer him to Moscow for surgery was made. He could not be transported, though, because of bad weather.
In today's #vatnik soup I'll theorize what's happening with Twitter after Elon took over. As with all social media platforms, Twitter's algorithm is their best-kept secret and there is very little public information available on it.
1/14
Like other social media algorithms, Twitter's is probably powered by a machine learning (ML) components which means that it's constantly changing its behavior. It gets "training data" from the 900 million daily tweets posted on the platform.
2/14
Social media ML algorithms are extremely complex, and engineers from Google and Facebook have said that they sometimes have hard time understanding their own ML algorithms:
In today's #vatnik soup I'll introduce a 🇷🇺 spokeswoman and a birthday girl, Maria Zakharova. She's been working at this position since 2015.
Maria married Andrei Makarov in a glamorous ceremony in New York in 2005. This soup consists of pictures from this lavish event.
1/9
Maria is probably the most quoted Russian diplomat. She likes to bash the West in her speeches, and often brings up (mostly made up) contradictions from the rhetoric of the US spokespeople.
2/9
Zakharova has made some pretty weird statements throughout the years. For example, she's said that 1995 Srebrenica genocide was staged. She's said the same thing about Bucha and Izyum.
In today's #vatnik soup I'll continue talking about Russkiy mir, the "Russian World". This time I'll focus
on the Russian idea of nationality, "Narodnost", and I'll also discuss Russian imperalism.
Narodnost is Russia's version of nationality. The definition of Narodnost came from Russia's leadership, rather than the population itself. The idea behind Narodnost is that Russian people should be ready to sacrifice themselves for the Tsar, for the country.
2/12
This led to a situation that common folk in Russia is very good at suffering & they've actually made it into a virtue. The general idea behind their suffering is that if you suffer for Mother Russia, you'll have lots of good things afterwards: after your death for the country,3/12
In today's #vatnik soup I'll discuss Russkiy mir, the "Russian World". It's a concept that comprises of core culture of Russia, including its traditions & interactions with other cultures. This series is an attempt to explain motivations behind Russia's actions & motivations.1/17
This soup is quite long and extensive, so grab a coffee or tea and enjoy!
First of all, there isn't only one Russia - throughout its history, Russia has been affected and shaped by several cultures and leaderships.
2/17
The core of the Russian society is the "Slavic Russia". It's the "Russian soul" & it's where the language and the Russian entity was born. In Slavic Russia the idea of all Slavic people being one was born, & the role of Russia was of course to keep the Slavic world together.
3/17
In today's #vatnik soup I'll introduce a pro-Russian, Ukrainian oligarch and a politician who goes by the name of Viktor Medvedchuk.
Someone commented on one of my previous soups that I should cover Ukrainian oligarchs, too, so here's one!
1/16
Medvechuk was a lawyer by profession, but quite terrible at that. He was known to being a defense lawyer during the 70s & 80s to various Ukrainian poets and Soviet dissidents, such as Yuriy Lytvyn, Vasyl Stus & Mikola Kuntsevich. They all were convicted and died in prison.
2/16
Medvedchuk entered the Ukrainian parliament in 1997 and was even elected as the Chairman until he was dismissed in 2001 for abuse of power and biased treatment.
He was the main behind-the-scenes force of the pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych in the 2004 presidential election.
3/16
In today's #vatnik soup I'll continue talking about troll farms and social media manipulation, extending the topic to other social media platforms, too.
Our social media space is constantly manipulated by paid actors whose goal is to control the online narratives.
1/10
Most (if not all)social media platforms are saying they are effectively fighting against fake accounts & bots. This is not true:fake account industry is blooming & it's also a very lucrative business.Changes made on these platforms have not changed the manipulation industry. 2/10
From the big social media sites, (pre-Musk) Twitter is actually the best at rooting out the fake accounts, with VKontakte coming close 2nd.Even if you'd think otherwise based on the news, FB, IG, TikTok and YouTube are quite terrible at this and have a massive troll problem. 3/10
