BRITAIN COMPLACENT & COMPLICIT IN REFUGEE ABUSE!!

UK government rips up protections for torture victims & asylum seekers, quadrupling times they may be held in processing centres such as Manston
independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
1/
By creating a "second class refugee protection" in a new, undeclared policy to reduce numbers, the Home Office has acted in secrecy to deny full asylum rights on the basis of faster processing
2/
These sneaky moves come amidst accusations the government are 'making it esier to get away with horrors'.

Immigration Minister @RobertJenrick is rewriting the laws, dramatically downgrading standards.
3/
Healthcare, legal advice, communications and sleeping conditions are all areas which take a hit, and this is AFTER conditions have been so appalling, 49 cases of diphtheria have been reported amongst asylum seekers
gov.uk/government/pub…
4/
These moves stand as 'part of a pattern' of deprioritising and worsening conditions for asylum seekers in line with the tenets of the #HostileEnvironment policies, which intentionally make life in the UK 'unbearable'
5/
Further accusations have been levelled at UK troops sent to support border security in Poland and Lithuania, who have allegedly been complicit in border abuses of refugees there. They are said to have helped build fences to prevent entry.
theguardian.com/world/2022/dec…
6/
Sunak's government deny they have any information related to these accusations, and refuses to release its internal evaluation on the issue.

Furthermore, the MoD DID in fact conduct a human rights assessment.
7/
They decided to go ahead with supporting border efforts in Lithuania DESPITE being officially aware of the country's use of pushbacks, which leave refugees stranded without shelter, food, or water.
8/
Médecins Sans Frontières have described the UK's denial of being aware of these abuse as "bewildering", suggesting the UK is "deliberately turning a blind eye" to the situation.

9/
Meanwhile, families are still grieving the recent incidents in the English Channel with more than 31 people confirmed dead in their attempts to seek safety.

One family member of a teenage asylum-seeker who died last year, said "I don’t think any lessons have been learned"
10/
We MUST do all we can to continue to support asylum-seekers, refugees, and those impacted by loss of life in the Channel while the government make things worse.

A THOROUGH AND TRULY EXCELLENT READ

Jeremy Clarkson, LBC radio and the debasement of women of colour: an abridgement of an incisive piece by @redmeatracists.

@LBC radio presenter Ian Payne is a fan of Jeremy Clarkson, BUT despite Clarkson's recent, awful misogynoir...
1/
He has been unable to muster more than muted condemnation for him, instead admiring him openly (“I’m a fan — and he makes me laugh”) and seemed frustrated by listeners who did not grasp Clarkson’s vile utterances were "stretching the envelope" for “shock-jock” value.
2/
Many people of colour, however, understood the racist heritage to the symbolism that Jeremy Clarkson recently disseminated in The Sun newspaper.

Sunak recently announced a 5-Point Plan on immigration which did not include detail and that remained hostile.

On Thursday, a plane containing 42 people landed in Albania’s capital Tirana and British Border Force were seen ‘unloading’ people.
1/4
independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
Plans include weekly flights to return ‘thousands’ of Albanians. The HO has classified Albania as a safe country.

Sunak’s language is hostile, equating asylum with criminality, stating, ‘We will crackdown on foreign criminals and those who should no longer be here.’
2/4
86% of Albanians granted leave to remain last yr were women, granted this on the likelihood of having been trafficked & of need of protection.

Concerns are grave now that the HO demands documented proof of sex trafficking rather than suspicion, further enabling vulnerability.3/4

UK's EU settlement scheme ruled unlawful by UK High Court.

Many risk becoming “illegal immigrants overnight”

"In a highly critical judgment, the court said the scheme breached the UK's Brexit Withdrawal Agreement".
1/
bbc.co.uk/news/uk-640536…
In the settlement scheme, launched in March 2019, EU citizens who arrived in the 5 years pre-Brexit must "prove they have been living in the UK continuously for at least five years before the end of 2020" to seek "settled status".
2/
bbc.co.uk/news/uk-576566…
It's estimated that over 100,000 people are yet to apply. Those who miss the deadline risk becoming "illegal immigrants" overnight, losing their right to work, rent and access the NHS.

Priti Patel’s actual Christmas cards.

Vile. Inhumane. Sickening. Repugnant.

Christmas is a time usually associated with love, hope, joy and kindness.

This year, our government’s values of persecution, cruelty, hate, fear mongering & blame of the most vulnerable in society.
1/6 Priti Patel’s Christmas car...A cartoon card of a pile of...
Lib Dem home affairs Alistair Carmichael stated, “We have seen Priti Patel’s lack of basic human decency time and time again…”.

The irony of his statement,
"If Priti Patel had been around, Mary, Joseph and Jesus would have been on their way to Rwanda…” not lost.
2/6 A photograph from online me...
A reminder that only last week more people drowned in the Channel.

Two captions in the cards show the words ‘National and Borders Bill’ & ‘Rwanda’; both schemes heavily criticised for being cruel, breaking law and diminishing human rights.

HOME OFFICE WAS AWARE OF ILLEGAL DETENTIONS

HO emails acknowledged the detention of migrants at a processing facility in November were "no longer legal".

450-500 people were described as "overflow" the day after Suella Braverman visited Manston.
bbc.co.uk/news/uk-640371…
1/
Braverman had been under pressure to better manage the severe overcrowding at the Manston site, and the chain of emails obtained through a Freedom of Information request showed, shockingly, that senior HO secretaries were aware of the situation
2/
The Shadow home secretary said the emails "demonstrate the Home Office knew that they were breaking the law and lay bare how their chaotic failure to plan led to this situation".

Child dies after hospital refuses care.
🧵🪡

5 year old Yusuf Mahmud Nazir died after being refused treatment at Rotheram General Hospital despite his heartbroken family "begging and begging" for help.
1/
news.sky.com/story/they-sai…
Despite Yusuf having what the doctor described as "the worst case of tonsillitis he had ever seen" his family were told "there are no beds and not enough doctors".

At this point, Yusuf was struggling to breathe, could not swallow, and was clearly distressed. He was sent home.
2/
Yusuf's family were eventually so desperate they called an ambulance and demanded treatment. He was taken to Sheffield Children's Hospital. Delays had meant that "infection had spread to his lungs and caused multiple organ failure resulting in several cardiac arrests."
