The UK is one of the most magical places in the world, and a country that you can keep going back to. Incredible landscapes and countryside, historical cities, and beautiful architecture.
Miles & points are a great way to explore this country.
However, one thing that the #ccgeeks & the #milesfreaks cannot help but keep getting smacked on the face with is - fees.
These charges on award tickets for a trip to the UK can potentially be as high as an economy revenue ticket.
So, what can be done? Let's see. π
First, let's take care of the outbound leg - DEL - LHR.
Below is a table with the miles requirement for both Y and J and the associated charges.
For the sake of this thread, we will consider the transfer partners available on Axis, only & one additional program - LifeMiles. π
As can be seen, the charges on the DEL - LHR leg can be lowered by simply choosing the right FFP (Frequent Flyer Program). β
Now, what about the return leg - LHR - DEL? The same table is below. π
As is clear, there are no saviors on this leg. Thanks to the high APD (Air Passenger Duty) that is levied when flying out of the UK, especially LHR, the fees on this redemption is always on the higher side.
But what if instead of LHR, we fly out of some other airport in the UK? Say MAN or BHX? Since LHR has a higher APD than these airports, you will only marginally reduce the fees, should you use to take this route.
Decent but not good enough. β
If you really want to save on the fees, here is a solution that is both feasible and doable. Instead of flying out of the UK, let's see what happens if we fly out DUB - Dublin.
Voila! Much much better. π
β But why DUB?
π Firstly, no high APD on flights from DUB, as can be seen above.
π Second, you won't need a separate visa, you can get to Ireland with your UK Visa.
π Third, it is a short flight from London with plenty of LCCs operating on this route, just look at some of the fares below.
So yea, that UK trip is definitely doable with low taxes, surcharges, and associated fees by just being a little creative. π
The idea of this thread is to just give you an idea of how to move things around and get a favorable award redemption. This is no hard and fast rule.
So with all of this information, which do you think is the best FFP for a trip to the UK?
Comment below with your thoughts. π

As a frequent traveller, I've picked up some super helpful & practical packing tips over the years. π¦
These practices make packing and unpacking a breeze and keep me organized on the go. π π
βοΈ The Weather app is your best friend!
Donβt just assume the weather at your destination! Too many people pack based on seasonal expectations.
Use the weather app, check the predictions for the period of your travel and check it till the last moment until you leave. You can make any changes required to your packing if thereβs a change in the weather patterns.
You can use any weather app or website for this, I use Mercury Weather on iOS. It allows me to add my trips to the app and get a quick look at the current weather and upcoming weather and monthly averages for each of the destinations.
π Choose the right clothing materials
Opt for fabrics like merino wool and poly blends over cotton or linen. π
They pack lighter, resist wrinkles, and usually look fresh off the hanger. Uniqlo's Airism line has been a staple for me.
They do a great range of tee and polo basics that are fantastic for travel.

Buying an iPhone on EMI is bad. β But not always, one such scenario is below. β
If you are buying using an HDFC DCB card via the SmartBuy Imagine store. Since DCB has a per day capping of 2500 points on SmartBuy, you lose out on a lot of value. Easy way to get around thisπ
Opt for a no-cost EMI on the SmartBuy Imagine store.
Usually, EMI transactions do not earn reward points, however, EMI on SmartBuy purchases on the Imagine store do and you get the 5X every month for the EMI paid, bypassing the 2500 per day limit.
The sweet spot of 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months will vary depending on the amount of your purchase. Screenshot 1 is for the the purchase of an iPhone 15 Pro with DCB without EMI and the second is with a 9-month EMI.

Get a tastecard membership, think of it sorta/kinda an Eazydiner equivalent wherein you get discounts, or other savings when eating out across their partner restaurants, cafes, and other establishments in the UK. Discounts can go up to as high as 50% or even more in some cases.
