Despite the difficult year for the industry, the Polkadot and Kusama community were busy building the largest, & most diverse ecosystem of use case specific layer-1 blockchains in the world, making huge strides toward building a better web.
2/ With 74 parachains, 300+ dapps, 550+ projects, and 2500 monthly active developers across the ecosystem, the Polkadot community has accomplished an incredible feat in just a little over 1 year since parachains went live, and is continuing to grow.
3/ Following the launch of XCM (Cross-Consensus Message), the Polkadot ecosystem kicked off a new era of secure cross-chain interoperability, sending more than 350,000 XCM transfers, a big step towards unlocking the magic of secure cross-consensus bridging to the world.
4/ Coupled with the upcoming launch of XCMP, this will end the "weakest link" problem that has hindered previous-generation bridging technology to the tune of $2.5 billion in losses this past year alone.
5/ Thanks to Polkadot’s industry-leading upgradeability and governance features, nearly 1000 seamless, forkless upgrades of @substrate_io blockchains have now taken place, including 15 on Polkadot in 2022, demonstrating that blockchain tech can evolve at the pace of innovation.
6/ Some of the major ecosystem adoption breakthroughs this year included partnerships between @AstarNetwork-@docomo, @efinityio-@SquareEnix, and @Kiltprotocol-@dena_news, demonstrating why Polkadot is the perfect home for the rapidly evolving Web3 opportunities.
7/ Throughout the year, ecosystem teams, projects, and dapps on Polkadot kept reaching new heights of what’s possible with blockchains, proving Polkadot is leading the way forward for DeFi, NFTs, identity, gaming, privacy, robotics, IoT, supply chain, and many more use cases.
8/ 2022 also saw the launch of the world’s largest trusted setup on Polkadot by @MantaNetwork, spanning 177 countries with over 13,000 participants and counting.
This technology is essential for building a better, more secure web that keeps sensitive information private.
9/ DeFi on Polkadot got a huge boost this year with the integration of @Tether_to and the announced @circle (USDC) integration, along with the launch of decentralized exchanges @EquilibriumDeFi & @polkadex.
10/ Utilizing the bleeding edge primitives across blockchain and Web3, @centrifuge is leading the largest investment in bringing real-world assets on chain to date with a $220m fund, while #ProjectLiberty is working on a new era of social media on Polkadot with @DSNP_org.
11/ Leading the path to true decentralization, Polkadot’s next-generation governance system, OpenGov, was launched on @kusamanetwork. Projected to go live on Polkadot in due course, this is the most advanced and sophisticated blockchain governance system ever devised to date.
12/ It was due in part to these efforts towards true decentralization that, in November 2022 after a 3-year engagement with the SEC, @Web3foundation announced that the DOT token had morphed from a security into software, a landmark achievement towards the realization of Web3.
13/ Polkadot’s staking system also got important updates with the launch of the staking dashboard and nomination pools, which increase the accessibility of native staking allowing holders to earn rewards with as little as 1 DOT while staking directly on-chain with their own keys.
14/ Over 130 million DOT and 300,000 KSM were lent by the Polkadot community through crowdloans to support parachains’ auction bids in 2022, a massive show of confidence in the future of the Polkadot ecosystem.
15/ 2022 was also the biggest year yet for Polkadot events: from @PolkadotDecoded, #sub0, #PolkadotBlockchainAcademy, and Polkadot hackathons to the biggest conferences & meetups in blockchain and Web3.
16/ More than 714 Polkadot ambassador-led meetups took place around the world this year in 50+ countries. On top of that, the Polkadot Ambassador program added more than 1600 new ambassador candidates this year – the Polkadot ecosystem keeps growing and getting together.
17/ With all this accomplished in 2022, next year for Polkadot looks incredibly strong: the rollout of OpenGov & parathreads on Polkadot, XCMv3, asynchronous backing, and continued maturity of Polkadot’s WASM Smart Contracts ecosystem will set the stage for further innovations.
18/ The outlook for the broader Polkadot ecosystem is even stronger: given that the average parachain on Polkadot has only been live for about 6 months, the new year will see the existing projects rolling out their core functionality, and bringing a new wave of users to Polkadot.
19/ 2023 will see the year of many other developments laid out for the Polkadot network. With all the opportunities on the horizon for Polkadot, read on for the full Polkadot 2022 Roundup: polkadot.network/blog/polkadot-…

3/ New HRMP channels have opened between @AstarNetwork & @InterlayHQ. This allows interBTC (Interlay's 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset) to enter the Astar DeFi ecosystem in a trustless and secure way:
1/ Everyone loves a roadmap, right? Well guess what — Polkadot founder @rphmeier has shared some exciting insights into proposals for a series of major upgrades.
2/ Asynchronous Backing will cut the block time for parachains down to 6 seconds from 12 and increase block space by 5-10x, hugely enhancing scalability.
This will increase the amount of work every chain can do AND optimize network performance, allowing scope for more parachains
3/ It’s estimated this will take the transactions-per-second capacity of the network to between 100k and one million without affecting security.
Asynchronous Backing could be ready for deployment on @kusamanetwork by the end of 2022 and then on Polkadot, pending audits & testing
2/ Nomination pools are now fully supported in the staking dashboard and you can test-drive the feature on Westend and @kusamanetwork 🙌
The pools will soon be enabled on Polkadot and then the staking dashboard will be ready for you to create, join and manage pools
3/ All nomination pools are natively hosted on-chain and are part of the Polkadot runtime, so they are upgradable, secure, and fully embedded as part of the Relay Chain.
So what else can you do beyond joining or creating a pool? Let’s break down some more of the features
1/ Congratulations to @Kiltprotocol on making Web3 history! KILT has successfully moved from @kusamanetwork to the Polkadot Relay Chain, marking the first time a live blockchain has migrated from one network to another.
2/ Kusama provided the ideal place for KILT to develop applications quickly, stress-test their technology and try things out.
Thanks to Kusama’s fast iteration cycles, KILT was able to quickly become decentralized, add new functionalities, and prove its robustness and utility.
3/ But KILT, an identity protocol for issuing verifiable credentials and decentralized identifiers, began seeing adoption by large-scale enterprises.
This required a high level of stability and security that can't be guaranteed within the more experimental environment of Kusama.
