@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford If anyone is "looking for" ways to be concerned, they sure don't need to look very hard. Reply 🧵
1/n.
The initiative clearly is at Stanford & whole pt of "initiative" is to persuade others to adopt, well, what shall we call this?
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford Steelman: "New norms for inclusive language."
Alternative view: "Language policing."
Why? Because of widespread *enforcement* of these "new norms" through punishments.
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford 1. Art history faculty fired after showing a medieval masterpiece depicting Mohammed. Not "language" exactly, but falls under broader categories of "expression" and academic freedom.
reason.com/volokh/2022/12…
Why? Bizarre allegations of "harm."
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford The only thing "Islamophobic" here was the admin's false implied belief that "all Muslms are the same." Or, as @AmnaUncensored put it, can you imagine not teaching evolution because it would "harm" evangelical Christians?

@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored Film prof investigated, removed from teaching for showing a 1960s Othello in which the titular (Black) character is played by a White actor (in makeup, duh).

@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored My personal fav: I was denounced as racist by over 1000 academics for ... wait for it ... using a quote from Fiddler on the Roof.
unsafescience.substack.com/p/1200-academi…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored USC prof, in a class on x-cultural communications, suspended for daring to say out loud a Chinese word that merely sounds like a US slur.
nypost.com/2020/09/06/pro…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored White sign language translator fired from play for translating language spoken by Black actors.
spamchronicles.com/broadway-sign-…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored "Objectivity" is good, right? That's why we have umpires, referees, science and value honest reporters, right? Nope. Objectivity is White supremacy, as per an award-winning physicist.
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored You play golf? Don't watch or refer to the "Masters." Of course, this is about the word, not the tourney. You have a postgrad degree? Maybe don't call it a "masters" you racist you.
theblaze.com/news/the-maste…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored Merit is good, right? You want to work with competents, not incompetents, right? Hard working people, people who stick to schedules, get things done? You racist you. From a Smithsonian exhibit (eventually removed).
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored So, my dear IT, even if it is some tiny little unit within Stanford, it is part of a much larger effort. They view themselves so benevolently, as rooting out racism&bigotry wherever it may be found.
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored Be careful, IT. You may get what you, if not exacty wish for, but dismiss as trivially tiny when its not.
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored This *movement* can find it anywhere. The "narrative techniques" employed by this movement can render anything as the height of bigotry, including dog-walking, commenting on the beauty of the day, and Gandhi.
unsafescience.substack.com/p/is-everythin…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored When will they come for you, IT? Who knows, but this big data analysis was fired for...wait for it...ready? Tw'ing an article by a Black Princeton sociologist showing that peaceful protests are more persuasive than violent ones.
theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored Was Komi "looking for" things to be concerned about? Perhaps. But one need not look very hard. This sort of language policing, expression suppression, and *imposition* of new norms is all around you.
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored Of course, lived experience is not *always* self-serving nonsense. In this essay, a Russian emigre, now USC Chem prof, compares these developments to life under the totalitarian Soviets. She concludes, not the "same," but disturbing similarities.
hxstem.substack.com/p/from-russia-…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored You know anyone who lived under communism? Ask them. Thank the gods, we don't. But academia has become a hotbed of this sort of nonsense. Have they been indoctrinates or do they merely think alike? Who cares? What matters is that they think alike. From a recent dissertation:
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored Indeed, there is now a whole genre of lived experience reports id'ing disturbing echoes of communist totalitarianism. This, from a Chinese emigre:
unherd.com/2020/07/americ…
@AndrewJ73405114 @HonestNauman @Komi_Frey @Stanford @AmnaUncensored I recently attended a lovey social event hosted by a family of ethnic, often immigrant, Ukrainians and Poles. To a person, they are appalled at what is happening here. They came here to escape this nonsense.
END.

Ok, you can't make this up. Apex journal Nature is in free fall. The centerpiece of this article:
nature.com/articles/s4156…
is a cartoon.
Short Thread, 1/n.
I started reading it. Early on, it says this:
"...in many ways, the experience for minoritized scholars is more like a vicious or hostile obstacle course5,6,7,8,9,10"
The #'s, 5-10, are references. So I looked up the first one, "reference" 5 (scare quote justification incoming).
Here is reference 5. It's an f'ing tweet! Nature paper's centerpiece is a cartoon and its "scientific" reference is a tweet! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Pirate Strike!
Paper shown JUST accepted at bigtime psych journal (Perspectives on Psych Sci).
On the disingenuousness of "diversity" as deployed in psychology & academia. (who, besides your fav pirate could get such a paper accepted)?
🧵
Paper available here:

Not gonna summarize; just gonna thread some quotes.
Paper leads off with a quote from ... wait for it ... try to guess... you will never get it. Gonna post it next tweet.

Dear @KirwanInstitute,
Your 2014 report on implicit bias is a scientific disaster area and plausibly describable as "misinformation." If you do not take it down, it can plausibly be described as "disinformation," given that you have been informed.

Has the culture shifted away from Social Justice Insanity? 3 articles (2 NYTimes).
🧵
NYTimes denounces cancel culture but not by name. Caricaturizes wild denunciations of an author's new book as transphobic, racist, etc. as "dystopian."
Indeed.

"The idea that a divorced white woman with two kids, working three jobs, was “privileged” was crass foolishness. The idea that American society was divided between Caucasians and “people of color” was simplistic."
I note that for most of 2020 & 2021 you could be denounced, ostracized or fired for making these types of statements. At the NYTimes (and lots of other places).

Breaking News: Arbitrator Decides in Favor of Charles @CharlesNegy, prof fired by UCF late 2020-21.
Thread. 1/n
Shown below, the arbitrator's ultimate ruling: Reinstatement w/tenure, plus full back pay & benefits, since he was fired.
What was he fired for? Charges were "unprofessional" behav, but anyone paying attention who wasn't an idiot whose brain was rotted by "anti-racist" intersectional dogma knew it was for WrongSpeech.
Charles was-but-is-now-once-again-"is" one of the few at-all right of center profs in all of academia. Slightly right, afaict. Tw'd stuff like "Black privilege is real" referring to things like affirmative action/DEI.
Short version here (search "Negy").
