I've gained 20,677 followers in the last 8 weeks on Medium.

And I kept my day job.

My 5 top writing tips (if you wanna get paid to write):

A bit of background here I've been writing on Medium for the last 3 years. At the start it was slow, then I found my feet, kept going and things clicked.

It's a long game but one that's worth it. I consistently make $2–4k a month on Medium for writing about the stuff I love.

1. Write from experience

If you work 9–5 you'll have bags of experience to work with. Figure out the stories worth telling.

Here's where I'd start if I was on day 1:

- Think about the moments at work that stick with you, ask why.

Everybody thinks of Steve Jobs as a tech guy. Then a great marketer.

But Steve Jobs was a master at a technique called 'pre-suasion'.

Here's how he does it (that I don't see anyone talking about):

Establish Credibility

Marketing 101: The message & the messenger.

You have to establish credibility if you want people to listen, how?

• Tell the audience what you've done
• Tell them the result of that
• Make it a moment in time

Now the audience is primed to listen.

Problem-Statement

You need to answer ONE question: so what?

To do that, you need a method to set up your product, I call it the 3 C's:

• Context (what exists now)
• Conflict (why that's bad)
• Conclusion (your product)

Make the gap between you & your competition huge.

It took 3 years, 966 articles and 100+ books to learn these 8 lessons.

1. Plan for Year Five

Short timelines lead to cheap actions.

Think long-term and most things become noise:

• Post flops? Data
• Failed experiment? Data

Focus on getting to year five and most things will take care of themselves.

2) Iterative Strategy

Most people don't stay in one place long enough and end up low-skilled in many areas.

The most successful people pick a thing and iterate it.

Relentless iteration + a long time horizon = unstoppable.

After 6 months of selling digital products on the internet I've come to ONE conclusion:

Copywriting is the MOST important skill in digital marketing.
