UKRAINIAN BAKHMUT OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY THREAD
/7 "Nowhere in those years was the Ukrainian idea manifested as strongly as in the villages around Bakhmut. Nowhere in the region is a district that would have produced more resistance commanders than Bakhmut."
/7 More than a century ago, Bakhmut was not only the center of Ukrainian life in the region; it was the center of Donbas. The community spread over the modern north of the Donetsk region. All administrative and business centers were located in Bakhmut, the regional capital.
/7 Bakhmut, as a full-fledged settlement, was founded by the Cossacks of the Izyum regiment in the 17th century. From the beginning, Bakhmut developed as an industrial city. First, there were salt mines, and later coal deposits were found.
/7 1917 boosted Ukrainian cultural life in the city. In March, the Ukrainian library and a drama club opened. And in April, a general community meeting was held in the city hall with an agenda of "Political organization of the residents based on Ukrainian national interests."
/7 The Ukrainian military of Bakhmut, immediately after the announcement of the III Universal of the Central Rada, hung a blue-yellow flag over the Bakhmut region Administration (now it is the College of Transport Infrastructure), removing the red flag.
/7 "Bakhmut's Ukrainian School Youth Circle" was also established and began publishing its "Free Thoughts" magazine under the patronage of the city's Ukrainian Club.
/7 After the Bolsheviks occupied Ukraine, Bakhmut resisted strongly. The last known local resistance commander Dorofiy Boyko (callsign "Dorosh") – killed in action in 1921 – but the resistance continued.
