it's still such a fun expressive movie for the sake of it tho. mentioned how american animation ppl think toy ad shows have to be artless but the same thing extends to education shows. education/toys & "fun cool visuals & content" aren't mutually exclusive
a lot of cartoons made jokes about "stupid educational content in cartoons vs FUN" but this wipes the floor with most of them in artistic playfulness
probably a very FREEDOM 🦅🏈🍔🇺🇸 driven attitude where you're either doing exactly what you want or your artistic vision is being stamped on by Big Brother's boot & you're incapable of making the most out of what you have

miyazaki uses his (occasionally very stupid, don't get me wrong) anger & dismissiveness to fuel his own work. roger ebert said hellraiser is "unimaginative" and being a critic was his job
like maybe he was just making shit up but god knows, maybe the translation is off or his wording was messy & he just meant to say "this philosophy results in civilian deaths irl". either way it's clear his main point is "I hate war stories where one side is inherently evil"
that's Miyazaki's view though. Masamune Shirow sees inhuman evils in movies/books as a way to AVOID ethnic human conflict & have people work together to stop a threat (but with fun action that gets your caveman brain pumped up) I think LOTR is exactly that

wish I saved em but I read some Itsuno DMC5-era comments that made it pretty obvious Itsuno didn't really like DmC; "this time you gotta let me do what I want" or something. it was just wrongthink for a while to admit it's even morally ok to dislike it
among journalists, industry people and industry/journo hopefuls/wannabes at least. no one outside of those groups actually liked it
being a contrarian I wanted to give it a try after the initial trailer (and I mean Maximo was basically Ghosts n' Goblins directed by a gaijin) but it just got worse & worse with all the dumb gameplay changes, shitting on fans, corporate idea of edginess, "Shakespearean" etc
