Dr. Timothy Pritts from the UC College of Medicine says there has been “substantial improvement” with Damar Hamlin over the past 24 hours.
“He is beginning to awaken and it appears his neurological condition and function is intact.”
Calls it a turning point in ongoing care.
UC Health physician Dr. William Knight IV says: “It’s been a long and difficult road for the past few days. He has been very sick and has made a fairly remarkable improvement.” Now is showing positive signs in vital signs and organ recovery. Workup ongoing regarding the cause.
Dr. Knight says immediate recognition of a serious situation and loss of pulse by the #Bills medical staff was critical, allowing Hamlin to get immediate bystander CPR and defibrillation. “We cannot credit their team enough.”
Dr. Knight: "We’re focused on the long-term recovery right now. ... He has a ways to go with liberation from the ventilator." Too early to project about Hamlin's full recovery. Many more steps but focus is on getting him home to his family.
Could Damar Hamlin play pro football again?
"It’s entirely too early to have that conversation. He’s still critically ill in the ICU."
Focus is on getting him breathing on his own, getting stronger and back home.
"The best outcome is back to who he was before this all happened."
Doctors say Damar Hamlin initially had a pulse on the field, then lost it under the nose of the doctors assisting him. Received immediate bystander CPR and defibrillation within minutes.
"Textbook" response and NFL's protocol should be a model for other sports leagues, they say.
Dr. Knight says Hamlin is still on the ventilator and hasn't been fully assessed, given the circumstances. "Neurologically intact" means big motor movements and following commands. As for cognition, speech, etc. -- "looking forward to learning more soon."

NFL EVP Jeff Miller says there has been no decision on whether to resume the Bills-Bengals game at a later date. Will consult with the clubs involved. Decision in the coming days.
"That conversation about what we do with that game has begun."
Troy Vincent on options for resuming the Bengals-Bills game or adjusting seeding: "Everything is being considered."
They'll lean on the guiding principles from COVID, including "value of winning and winning percentage." Need to give Commissioner suggestions if game not resumed.
Speaking about Damar Hamlin on a call, NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills says it's "not an exaggeration to say that the skilled and immediate response by all these talented caregivers prevented a tragic outcome at that moment."
Hamlin remains in critical condition.
Sills says he doesn't want to address the cause of Hamlin going into cardiac arrest, pending further investigation, but Commotio Cordis "certainly is possible." Regardless of cause, emphasizes rapid response is key in any event like this.
NFL EVP Troy Vincent now speaking, voice breaking. "There was only one policy and practice that mattered that evening, and that was the emergency action plan by those first responders." Says it was executed to perfection and "it gave our brother Damar another day to live."
The NFL just sent a memo to the remaining playoff clubs with a significant update to COVID testing cadence — eliminating the distinction between vaccinated and unvaccinated players, who will no longer be subject to daily testing, per sources.
The change is based on info gathered the past month on the Omicron variant and was approved by the NFLPA. All players and tiered staff will be subject to enhanced symptom screening, symptom-based testing and targeted surveillance testing.
NFL and NFLPA medical experts are seeing the Omicron wave receding, targeted testing is working and no complications with new 5-day return rule. Also, they’re not seeing unvaccinated people shedding virus longer as with previous variants. So all sides comfortable with this shift.
The NFL informed clubs that unvaccinated players who tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days -- including #Colts QB Carson Wentz and LB Darius Leonard and #Chargers WR Mike Williams -- are now eligible to play Sunday provided symptoms have improved, per sources.
Here’s the full NFL memo to clubs, which also notes that fully vaccinated individuals can still “test out” and return in less than 5 days. Unvaccinated players out 5 days since the initial positive specimen was collected.
Note that return to play isn't contingent on being asymptomatic. You need:
- 5 days since initial positive swab
- At least 24 hours since last fever
- Other symptoms (e.g. cough) "resolved or improved"
- Cleared by team doctor in consultation with ICS and NFL
The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to updated COVID protocols. Statement from the league:
Most notable from a competitive perspective: There are now more ways for fully vaccinated players and staff to “test out” of COVID protocols and return from quarantine in less than 10 days. It’s very technical but should mean more players and coaches returning sooner.
The key is the individual must be asymptomatic, as a majority of the players who tested positive the past few days have been. Return is possible as soon as the day after the initial positive test.
