Anyone who participated in the #January6th attack on our government should not be eligible for political office, including Kevin McCarthy. #Speakerofthehousevote
Just to be clear: all sides of the Republican Speaker debate are insurrectionists.
I could be wrong, but I tried to double check it. These are the folks who voted against certifying Biden's election: nytimes.com/interactive/20…
We know from the Jan6 Committee Report that objecting to certifying the election results was a central part of the coup plot.
As the J6 Committee explained in great detail: there was the "legal" coup & there was the "violent" coup. The "legal" coup attempt used the mechanisms of the courts, election law, & Congressional vote counting process to hide the coup behind the veneer of institutional practice.
The "legal" coup was just as dangerous as the violence coup--maybe more so, in fact. Because it had the appearance of legality it had a greater chance of success. It looked "cool and normal" and like it followed the democratic rules of the game. The violence obviously didn't.
I'm not sure why or how we're supposed to carry on like usual when the coup plotters are still in government. I hope someone mentions this in their House speech today.
This is why I said yesterday that Dems should only deal with non-insurrectionist Republicans to form a coalition speaker. Insurrectionist Republicans should be boxed out of Committee leadership. Those positions can go to Republicans who support democracy.
In 2010 I published my first book Founding Fictions. Not a lot of people read it, but it's still pretty relevant. Here are the epigraphs & ToC, to get a sense of it.
Folks used to ask me how citizens are constructed/constituted now--and my answer in 2010 was that we're still told that we're heroes, except when we're seen as dangerous to stability, but practically we're still ironic partisans (told that we're powerful, but only as partisans).
But I'd change that answer now. I'd say we're still told that we're heroes, except when we're seen as dangerous to stability (that's the "eulogistic covering" central to our Constitution and political imagination), but now we're positioned as propagandists as much as partisans.
-Alliteration (words with the same beginning sound)
-Antithesis (juxtaposing of words with contrasting ideas)
-Hung together with a familiar form (the alphabet)--I'm not sure what/if there's figure for that.
It's a ceremonial speech (epidictic), which are speeches about who we are, about our values.
It's also deliberative (about policy), about what policies the Democratic Party will support, based on their values.
The form A-Z is a useful device, because it is so familiar--but it also makes an argument. These are the Democratic Party policies, from beginning to end. These are our values from beginning to end.
I've seen a lot of folks talking about accountability. I'm with you, we need it. However, Trump is really good at avoiding accountability. Like, his whole life. It's what makes him a dangerous demagogue.
Trump's war rhetoric, used to attack his opposition (and the United States):
Unlucky 13th vote. Will Republicans find a non-insurrectionist to nominate for Speaker of the House, a position that is second in line to the presidency?
Rep. James Comer voted to certify the election results on January 6th, 2021, yet he rises to nominate insurrectionist Rep. Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House of Representatives.
🎵On the twelfth round of voting my true love gave to me 🎵
Rep. Mike Garcia is an insurrectionist who voted against certifying the legal election of Joe Biden on January 6th, 2021.
He arose to give a nomination speech supporting insurrectionist Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House. That position is second in the line of presidential succession (after the Vice President).
If voting be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.
That strain again! it had a dying fall:
O, it came o'er my ear like the sweet sound,
That breathes upon a bank of violets,
Voting and giving odour! Enough; no more:
'Tis not so sweet now as it was before.
O spirit of Votes! how quick and fresh art thou,
That, notwithstanding thy capacity
Receiveth as the sea, nought enters there,
Of what validity and pitch soe'er,
But falls into abatement and low price,
Even in a minute: so full of votes is fancy
That votes alone is high fantastical.
