Watching a feed from Congress, on a Saturday afternoon on the other side of the world.
I want to see history being mad.
A 15th vote possible tonight. Remembering the words of P.J. O'Rourke: the Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work then they get elected and prove it.
I wish there was a #PlanetAmerica live commentary on this.
I like to imagine the very old guy scrolling through his phone is showing the other guy his favourite geese memes.
Maybe Matt Gaetz thinks the hair counter balances the chin, but it's just drawing attention to it.
They can't even vote on whether to adjourn for the weekend or not.
It's 23:40 in DC.
Okay and we are not adjourning (some of them have changed their votes, in a single vote, which makes the 14 votes for speaker even more baffling).
So time remaining on a vote is meaningless. Time means what they want it to mean.
To translate today's events in the #Speakerofthehousevote into Australian vernacular: "couldn't organise a root in a brothel".
Discount Victor Gerber kicks off the 15th vote with a spoken word performance of "A Little Less Conversation"
Minnesota purple tie says ghost George Washington wants them to get on with it.
In Australia when we elect a speaker they have to be dragged to the chair (except for Bronwyn Bishop, who took a helicopter).
"What were the highlights of your American trip?"
"Nunn of Iowa"
Matt Gaetz nominates self for Nobel Peace Prize after brokering truce between Boebert and Taylor-Greene.
Getting to the business end now. I've done nothing today.
It's all over, McCarthy gets there. The woman counting the votes rolled her eyes.
Putting a pretty face on fascism.
Ilhan Omar's face says what we were thinking

I wondered why they kept having votes for a guy who keeps losing.
Turns out he makes concessions ahead of each vote. So a couple more votes and McCarthy will be wearing a powdered wig and clown nose in the speaker's chair, and Tuesday is free burritos for everyone.
Those voting against McCarthy - or at least their supporters - are convinced Trump will take the speaker's role. Sure. That man would love a job where he has to show up to work every day and is only 3rd in command.
This McCarthy stuff is fascinating to watch. I recommend @ElieNYC to see what's going on here.
Though if Congress can't elect their own speaker, maybe we could send them Bronwyn Bishop.
Reviews of "The Last Days of American Crime", a thread:
Variety: An offensive eyesore... Overlong and inelegant... Like some sloppy relic of what once passed for entertainment. (They also mention heavy use of voice over)
Indiewire: so bad it should be illegal... Agonisingly dull... It would take longer to point out the movie's plot holes than to watch the thing... A braindead slog that shambles forward like the zombified husk of the heist movie it wants to be.
Backburning is not a means of creating fire breaks. It involves small, contained fires in at risk areas on a regular basis to reduce ground fuel loads whilst leaving upper canopy of forest intact.
When sparks can jump 1km or more, firebreaks are impossible.
Fuel reduction burns can only be carried out when the ground is moist, so fires stay at ground level and don't spread to the canopy.
In a drought like now, the ground isn't damp, it's dry. Back burning is too dangerous after prolonged drought. Like now.
Hey guys. Saw a tweet referring to Jim Jones' followers - the ones who died at Jonestown - as brainwashed zombies. It's so far from the truth, which like everything in life is far more complicated. You have to look at the full story.
So here it is: why everything you know about Jonestown is wrong (and you should never joke about "drinking the kool aid"). Strap in, it's going to be a long one. 2/
Why do this? Because almost everyone who died at Jonestown was a good person working hard for a better, more equal future. They deserve better than the racism and slurs which have tainted the discourse of their lives and deaths for 40 years 3/
So @Centrelink have quarantined my entire tax refund for a false #robodebt they're claiming I was overpaid all the Family Tax benefit from the first two years after my marital separation... When I was studying, not working, and barely eating.
It's just straight up theft.
Finally got an explanation of the exact details of debt. I explained it's something I can easily disprove. Guy said it might not make a difference.
I might be able to get some money back if I can prove financial hardship. To recover my own money.
This is what they do to people
Still on phone.
Guy and I now realising info they have is accurate and I gave documentation at the time (I always do) so where/why/how debt?!
So after finishing uni/starting full time work last October, the first extravagant thing I bought myself was a VIP ticket to #dragcon2019. It was extravagant alright - I had no trip planned, no passport, hadn't been overseas since 2003. But sounds neat, let's, do it! 1/
Over the next few months, through loads of scrimping, the trip came together. Passport, flights, accommodation. Through it all there was still life: my job is gruelling (I've had to call 000 on suicidal people and console parents whose child has died 2/
Then the usual pain of being separated from my kid, my old demons and a new autoimmune condition. But hey, Drag Con! So exciting, but best of all, meeting Trixie and Katya. On hard days I'd watch UNHhhh while getting ready for work. It became a daily habit. 3/
