For the ten millionth time: the Republican House ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT have the ability to lay a finger on Special Counsel Jack Smith. Can't cut his funding, can't do anything. It's literally not a thing. Any news outlet or pundit pushing this crap should be put out of business.
It doesn't matter that Jim Jordan is vowing to defund the Special Counsel probe. He does not have that ability. It's not even up for debate. It's literally not a thing. So the media has no business running headlines like "Jim Jordan vows to defund Special Counsel probe."
If I vow to flap my arms and fly, the headline should not be "Palmer vows to flap his arms and fly." That headline would falsely imply that such a thing is possible, which misinforms people. The headline should be "Palmer vows to do something that's literally impossible."
When Republicans come up with the disinformation they want to push, they base it specifically on the kind of false things that they think the mainstream media will be willing to run with for ratings purposes. The media knows it's disinformation, but can't help itself.
When it comes to our ability to shut down the Republican agenda, half the battle consists of calling out major media outlets whenever they run with intentionally misleading headlines like "Jim Jordan vows to defund Special Counsel."
If our side becomes convinced that the Special Counsel is just going to be shut down or defunded anyway, and that Trump is just going to get away with it all and magically take over in 2024, then our side won't bother to fight and put in the work over these next two years.
This is why I spend every single day of my life pushing back against the mainstream media's prevailing false narratives, and why you should be doing the same if you want to consider yourself a political activist. It is, at the least, half the job of being a political activist.

If you’re yelling “Republican bastards are going to cut social security and Medicare, we’re doomed!” then you’re part of the problem.

What you should be saying instead: “Republican bastards are trying to cut social security and Medicare, but Democrats are going to stop them!”
The Democratic Party itself fully understands the difference between these two kinds of messaging. Unfortunately, most activists and pundits on our side have found they can get more attention for themselves with the “we’re doomed” messaging and then bashing the Democrats.
As a result, many of you only ever hear two things from the loudest voices on your own side: 1) we’re doomed, and 2) the Democrats are bad at messaging, so you believe and repeat these two lies. And you never even hear the Democrats’ very good messaging.

Even if the lunatic caucus does elect Kevin McCarthy, they will not be able to do almost any of the scary evil things they’re vowing to do. Pundits all know this but they’ll opportunistically spin it into “we’re all doomed” anyway. Don’t let them. House Republicans are crippled.
The lunatic caucus wouldn’t be able to do most of that they’re threatening even if they had 218 votes for it, which they do not.

Republicans in moderate districts have already made clear they’ll vote down the lunatic caucus’ rules package and such.
What you need to understand is that this Speaker debacle is a fundraising stunt for the lunatic caucus. If they cave to McCarthy tonight, it’ll be because they’ve milked all the fundraising they can out of this stunt, and they’re ready for the next stunt.

At this point Kevin McCarthy is writing checks he knows he can’t cash in order to get the votes of monsters, and it still may not put him over the top. Even if it does, since he can’t deliver on most of these promises, he’s setting himself up for a painful run and swift ouster.
McCarthy knows he can’t magically pull off most of the evil things he’s promising to the lunatic caucus. They know it too. They just want him to try these things, knowing he’ll fail, so they can tell their base they got McCarthy to try these evil things. Then they’ll discard him.
And by attempting these evil things, McCarthy will alienate his members from swing districts, who will only he more inclined to work with Democrats on a compromise Speaker once McCarthy is ousted. McCarthy is setting himself to be quickly crushed from both sides.

Michael Moore now says the Democrats will take control of the House before 2024. That's nice, but there's currently no path for that to happen. Moore always predicts more than is even possible, so he can bash the Democrats later for not pulling off his impossible predictions.
This is the same guy who insisted the Democrats would win the 2022 midterms in a blowout, knowing that it was mathematically impossible, just so he could bash them for not pulling it off.
Moore has a consistent knack for getting media attention by making absurdly sunny predictions, and then when he's proven wrong, getting even more media attention by blaming the Democrats for the fact that his impossible predictions didn't happen. Quite a racket.

If this keeps up, Democrats may have an angle for electing a compromise Speaker. They won’t magically get Jeffries. It’ll be some no-name non-insurrectionist Republican. With key concessions about sham committee investigations and such. This would be a huge victory for Democrats.
Spelling this out now because if it happens, the doomsday pundits will insist the Democrats “caved” by electing a Republican Speaker, and should have instead somehow magically made Jeffries the Speaker. Nothing works that way, but these scummy pundits play on emotions, not facts.
There’s also a hypothetical where McCarthy himself agrees to a boatload of Democrats’ stipulations in exchange for becoming Speaker. The Democrats would also be wise to take this deal if it’s presented. It would render the loony tunes wing powerless.

Kevin McCarthy has agreed to let any five House Republicans oust him as Speaker at any time, meaning he'd spend every day auditioning to keep the job, trying to keep everyone in his caucus happy so they don't remove him. Even with this concession, he STILL doesn't have the votes.
We'll see what happens between now and tomorrow. Either the holdouts are just trying to get more out of him before giving him their vote, or they really have decided not to vote for him no matter what. Only they know which it is. You and I don't know. McCarthy may not even know.
That said, there is no indication that any other potential Speaker candidate could currently come anywhere close to 218 votes. So tomorrow's vote will likely either result in McCarthy becoming Speaker, or no one becoming Speaker for now.
