On this day in 1912, Africa's oldest liberation movement, the African National Congress (ANC) - which inspired formation of other parties to fight for freedom - was founded in Bloemfontein.
It won freedom for South Africa after 82 years of bitter struggle.
Following many years and wars
of resistance against colonial invaders and white settlerism, which had started in 1652,
on 8 January 1912, chiefs, representatives of people’s and church organisations, and other prominent individuals gathered in Bloemfontein to form the ANC.
In 1652, Dutch colonial pioneer Jan van Riebeeck established a small colony on the Cape of
Good Hope (Cape Town) as a refreshment station for the Dutch East India Company.
It soon became a town as Dutch settlers sought to grab land and establish themselves through farming.
Originally, it was called South African Native National Congress.
It then changed its name to the African National Congress in 1923 as it sought to become more Pan-African and to mobilise Africans across the region to fight colonial administrations and discrimination.
KEY DATES IN SOUTH AFRICA HISTORY:

1867 - Diamonds discovered at Kimberley;
1877 - Britain annexes Transvaal;
1879 - British defeated by Zulus at the famous Battle of Isandlwana. The British's defeat by Zulu forces under King Cetshwayo reverberates around and shocks the world, but they finally take over Natal;
1880-81 - Boers rebel against the British, sparking the first Anglo-Boer War;
1880s - Gold is discovered in the Transvaal, triggering the gold rush;

#DelimitationDisaster
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) made a fundamental and fatal blunder using the old Lancaster House constitution on the draft delimitation report, rendering it null and void ab initio; exposing Zec's disastrous incompetence.

In an analysis, Veritas, a group
of lawyers seeking to advance accountable government, democracy, constitutionalism and rule of law in Zimbabwe, says the report is deeply flawed and has serious malapportionment errors shown by huge variations in voters' numbers distribution.
The biggest mistake which shows that the report is a botched task is
the shockingly incompetent use
of "some provisions of the old Lancaster House rather than on the provisions of our current Constitution – thus rendering the whole exercise unconstitutional". Image

#DelimitationCrisis
Former Energy minister and then opposition MDC-T senior leader -eventually leader of the splinter Renewal Democrats of Zimbabwe - Elton Mangoma says the controversial delimitation process is riddled with errors, fundamentally flawed and unconstitutional. Image
This will further throw into chaos an exercise already damaged by observations of gerrymandering, malapportionment and political contestations, as well as fights over administrative and logistical issues that have led to divisions within the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec).
Mangoma says the delimitation exercise is based on a wrong legal foundation and is mathematically flawed, hence unconstitutional.
He says the process design and constituency calculations based on registered voters numbers are wrong and the whole process is thus deeply flawed. Image

Public outrage is mounting over the brutal assault of elderly opposition CCC supporters by Zanu PF supporters in the political volatile Murehwa, about 100km north of the capital Harare, a few days ago.
The incident, ahead of general elections, has shocked society and authorities.
The video, which has gone viral, shows elderly men and women being publicly flogged and viciously assaulted, harassed, harangued, while also being interrogated through brazen intimidation for association with the CCC and its activities.
CCC has blamed Zanu PF and condemned the intimidation and brutality, saying this was further evidence the ruling party is going to resort to the same terror tactics it has used since 1980 to rig and steal elections as it is afraid losing free and fair polls due to unpopularity.

Victoria Falls mayor Somveli Dlamini, Local Government minister July Moyo's ally who is on bail after being arrested on fraud and corruption charges, is brazenly violating bail conditions and interfering with evidence with impunity; going to work and office, chairing meetings. Image
This is what Hwange regional magistrate Collet Ncube initially feared when he denied Dlamini bail.
In denying him bail, Ncube had said there was no guarantee that
if released, Dlamini would not violate his bail conditions and interfere with evidence.
Ncube has been proved right.
Dlamini, a Ward 9 councillor in Victoria Falls, was arrested in October last year by a Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission crack team on allegations of
fraud and corruption involving a commercial stand valued over US$90 000.
He is out on bail, but is violating bail conditions.

Rodger Savory, a grandson of a Rhodesian engineer Jimmy Savory who did Lake Kariba's detailed "backbone traverse" survey in the 1940s, says the world's largest dam now has water problems due to environmental and hydrological upheavals in catchment areas, not lack of rain per se.
Savory's explanation comes amid serious electricity supply problems due to diminished generation capacity mainly at Lake Kariba and Hwange power stations, the country’s biggest local suppliers. Zimbabwe is currently reeling
from power outages due to low electricity generation.
"Kariba is a dam which is in failing to meet it’s designed parameters for hydropower generation as originally envisaged by my grandfather when he first did the calculations for the dam and surveyed the locations for the dam wall," Savory says.
