How to live a life of happiness.

The Surfer Mentality:
When a surfer gets up on a wave, they enjoy the moment, even though they know the wave will eventually end.

They fully enjoy THIS wave—knowing that there are always more waves coming.

It's a powerful mentality for riding the waves of life.
The surfer knows that they don't have to ride every single wave that comes their way.

They alone have the freedom and the power to choose which waves to take, and which waves to let pass by.
Sometimes there are going to be long, painful periods between the waves.

Sometimes so long that you may start to wonder whether there will ever be a good wave again.

But if you are patient—and position yourself appropriately—you'll be ready when the next wave inevitably comes.
So as you approach the days ahead, think about adopting the Surfer Mentality:

Enjoy every ride while it lasts!

I first came across the Surfer Mentality in a short video from my friend @GuillaumeMbh last year, but began to think more about it after re-reading Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life.

It is a wonderful, meditative book. Highly recommend audiobook as well. amazon.com/Barbarian-Days…
The Surfer Mentality is also a subtle reminder that the only way to live is by putting yourself out there.

You can’t catch any waves sitting on the shore.

You have to get out there.

Is there a risk? Sure.

But the rewards are so, so beautiful.
I believe the Surfer Mentality can also apply to dealing with grief:

I’ve often heard the grieving process described as a series of waves.

You have to allow yourself to accept and feel the waves rather than trying to fight them.

It slowly gets better.
Another application of the Surfer Mentality I’ve been thinking about: Stress and Anxiety.

Stress and anxiety are a constant in life, but you can choose to let them float under you and pass by.

Don’t feel the need to ride those waves.
The Surfer Mentality is also about the knowledge that 90% of the time you won’t be riding any wave.

You’ll be paddling and waiting.

But when the right wave does come, you need to be positioned appropriately and ready to catch it.
The Surfer Mentality is also about rolling with the blows that life inevitably deals you.

Every now and then, you will get crushed by a wave—the next wave may crash down on top of you.

What matters is how you respond.

You can always get back on the board.

Today is my 32nd birthday.

Over the last month, I asked several 90-year-olds what advice they would give to their 32-year-old selves.

Here's the life advice everyone needs to hear:
1. Now and then, break out the fancy china and drink the good wine for no reason at all.

2. Dance at weddings until your feet are sore.

3. Tell your partner you love them every night before falling asleep. Someday you’ll find the other side of the bed empty and wish you could.
4. Don’t fear sadness, as it tends to sit right next to love.

5. Treat your body like a house you have to live in for another 70 years.

6. Never raise your voice, except for at a ballgame.

7. Do one good deed every single day, but never tell anyone about it.

Feeling stuck? Go for a walk.

There is no mental block strong enough to outlast the power of a 30-minute walk.
We really need to normalize boredom.

Some of your most creative moments come during periods of boredom.

On a walk, in the shower, or at dinner by yourself.

You’re bored, your mind wanders, your thoughts mingle. Bam! Creative insight strikes.

Schedule boredom into your weeks.
Simple challenge for the week:

Go for a 30-minute tech-free walk.

• No phone
• No music
• No podcasts
• No articles
• No audiobooks

Just you, your thoughts, your gratitude, and the fresh air.

It’s a simple reset that will change your perspective.

How to improve your mental health in 2023.

Use my 1-1-1 Method:
It is well understood that journaling is an extremely powerful tool for improving mental health.

But if you’re anything like me, you’ve struggled to get started with a practice.

The intimidation of the blank page holds you back.

I developed a dead simple approach that works:
The 1-1-1 Method

Every single evening, at the end of your work day, open up your journal and write down three simple points:

• 1 win from the day
• 1 point of tension, anxiety, or stress
• 1 point of gratitude

It takes about 5 minutes.

3 intentions to bring with you into 2023:

(1) Time is your most precious asset—it’s all you have and you’ll never get it back.

(2) Rest is a core part of your daily systems—not a reward for your efforts.

(3) Motivation is a byproduct of movement—when in doubt, start moving.
Time is your most precious asset.

When you're young, you are a "time billionaire”—rich with time.

Too many people fail to realize the value of this asset until it is gone.

Treat time as your ultimate currency—it’s all you have and you can never get it back.
Rest is a core part of your daily systems.

One of the most difficult challenges for any ambitious person is eliminating the guilt associated with free time and rest.

All growth requires balance: Find balance—find growth.
