second, writing has multiple communicative modes, as does speaking.
for example, perhaps you are writing as if from a pulpit to convey information primarily in one direction to a broad audience. in this case direct and clear language may be optimal.
there are other modes!
you may also--for example--engage with a single person in mutual conversance; or hold forth at a party, with frequent interjections from a small audience.
by and large, tweeting is often more akin to these scenarios in its dynamic. there is one salient difference, however
while at a party, or in a discussion with a single person, it's likely you are familiar with your interlocutor(s), and that you like them and can easily reach a kind of resonance
that is: your audience is in a sense pre-filtered.
on twitter, this very much does not obtain
_clarity_ of conveyance remains important in this case, but the utility of directness may be subverted: for by selectively reducing directness one may minimize the likelihood that hostile passers-by and wet blankets will alight on your pleasant conversation
if this is the sort of conversation in which your heart delights--intimate, but open to new like minds and unbounded by geography--there is no invention of the age greater than twitter dot com
but you must use a bit of art to select for winsome interlocutors
there is a second reason for clear yet indirect conveyance, which reinforces the first from both sides but is not so crassly utilitarian
that reason is that indirection and misdirection are FUN
esotericism gratifies and flatters the careful reader who takes a bit of effort to identify your meaning
of course there is an upfront cost: and so it is your sacred duty as an esotericist to amply reward the faith of those who persevere by making the revelation a delight
if you neglect to do this, you're just writing badly
a final advantage of indirection is the sense of mutual comprehension engendered between the understanding reader and the esoteric writer. you now share a pleasant secret; your worlds are a bit less lonely, a bit warmer.
when i was an undergraduate i took the lsat on a whim. the test site was at hamline. i stayed up til 4a playing WoW the night before so i was pretty tired the day of the exam
to counter my fatigue, during the break i walked around looking for an unlocked office where there might be some coffee. i found such a room containing coffee and drank drank a cup of it. it was room temperature, black, and clearly from the day before
daughter continues her investigations in metacognition by responding to inquiries with "i still thinking!"
discussing this last night, @selentelechia thought this was striking; that someone would have awareness of and words for mental operation so early. however,
@selentelechia we eventually concluded it just MAKES SENSE
time may be clouding this memory but I recall Thoughts having exquisite weight and texture when I was a young child. in a sense perhaps Thoughts and Ideas are directly palpable to a toddler who doesnt indulge in misguided cartesianism
@selentelechia when my daughter /thinks/--well, she does it like I do so its immediately recognizable
her eyes become unfocused, she stops responding to other stimuli. it's a full-body action for her, just like running or jumping
ok so this is has the potential to be a bit of fun actually. with some caveats. a few notes on the new house select committee for Investigating the Government archive.is/GeSJV
the committee is being set up to do--well, its not really clear what. WaPo states that it is "empowered to investigate any federal agency that collects information about Americans"
apparently there is some amount of latitude involved
the panel is most likely motivated by (i) january 6 prosecutions and (ii) lmao of course there's a house committee investigating the minority party thats just normal now
and of course the spooks will fight it tooth and nail in court, per ushe
im glad everyone in ai is hanging out and having a good time but "cerebral valley" is a ghastly appellation and if it is embraced even ironically im going to be fully blackpilled about ai prospects
rt 🔒
"cerebral valley" is bad because (1) its phonetically cumbersome and (2) shouts "i am very smart" without demonstrating that one is very smart by being clever while making the claim
im very clear about my views. however, i often gate them with a dash of esotericism
this is partly a speedbump to induce readers to think just a little bit rather than have a kneejerk reaction, which serves as a tax on ppl who want to be low-effort tiresome abt object level nonsense
unfortunately this tactic has a failure mode
some ppl REALLY wanna be mad but absolutely wont, or cant, do the legwork
