🧵EPIC epic win for Stamford Hill girls & parents - Years of scheming at Yesodey Hatorah Senior Girls School finally hit the buffers as voluntary aided YHS ordered by the Schools Adjudicator to increase Published Admission Number (PAN) by TEN new places gov.uk/government/pub…
The significance of this decision cannot be overstated and so long that there aren't more than 80 applicants EVERY SINGLE APPLICANT will get in. While there have been 80 girls in the past this is generally not the case. 2/
For September 2022 there were 76 applicants and only 70 offers so 6 girls rejected. At least 1 girl had to go through the stress of an appeal which was successful. 2021 had 80 applicants for 65 places but only 72 offers and 8 girls rejected, some spending year out of school 3/
The Adjudicator has now seen through the web of lies and found that a PAN of under 80 is UNREASONABLE. And what a web it was. YHS is a school built with millions of taxpayers' money for capacity PAN of 90. It then added a building to give it capacity of 105
4/
But it constantly chipped away at those number to keep Stamford Hill Charedi girls OUT. First it added a private fee-paying sem in the publicly funded building which the minutes show was with the express intention "to solve the problem of over-capacity in the school building" 5/
When that didn't reduce the numbers enough they created 2 fictitious year groups with total capacity of 130 places to reduce PAN from 105 to 65(!) despite that those 2 year groups NEVER operated. Again they clearly stated how the school was "operating at well below PAN" 6/
As 2020 & 2021 admissions show, the way it worked was that with a low PAN of 65 they could reject everyone above that number and then find a way to admit those they wanted. For e.g. when YHS favourites appealed the appeal wasn't contested and so those got in by default 7/
But when those fictitious year groups closed they increased the PAN by FIVE places only. Do the sums yourself: 2 fictitious year groups totalling 130 places removed but only 25 places added (5 places per year over 5 years)! But now the Adjudicator has ruled enough is enough. 8/
The YHS lies have been shot through and the barricaded gates busted open. Whoever applies up to the magic number of EIGHTY - WILL BE ACCEPTED. Because as the Adjudicator put it - "THERE IS CAPACITY AT THE SCHOOL" (my caps) 9/
"As far as the physical capacity of the school is concerned, I am in no doubt that there is room for more girls to be admitted than will be the case if the Year 7 PAN remains at 70".
10/
And as for YHS sob stories of being at capacity and poor overworked teachers: "The school is by no means unique in wishing its accommodation were different, or in having budgetary difficulties or staff who feel that they are working under pressure" 11/
As you'd expect YHS fought tooth and nail to resist this. They even had the chutzpe to argue that the "adjudicator had no jurisdiction" to rule on the issue. But thankfully this was given short shrift. 12/
YHS then argued that the school hall - that seats 400 adults for a wedding dinner + dancing space - can hold max. 350 teenage girls davening with a siddur. Who knows, maybe YHS girls shokel very hard. And they forgot that same hall held 800+ girls for anti-technology talk 13/
If only fibbing and rejecting girls was treated with the same seriousness as smartphones! YHS also argued that the adjacent sem building (circled in green) which sits cheek by jowl with main school building is a "separate building" and so can't be counted for capacity. 14/
But the Adjudicator saw through that one easily. And there's even a cherry on the cake - The Adjudicator also found that Torah Learning and online social media are 'private' activities and so can be self-certified and don't need to be certified by UOHC Rabbinate. 15/
So if you say you have a shiur and you're not online that's it and YHS can't go snooping on you at your shul's Daf Hayomi shiur or - Lehavdil of course - on facebook and insta.
HUGE DAY FOR GIRL AND PARENT POWER!!! 16/
But sad moral of this and other stories: Just like only non-Charedi civil judge can rule on alleged Charedi abuser, so it is if you want a place for Charedi kids at Charedi schools. Don't bother with Charedi rabbonim & arsekonim - head straight for non Charedim. They will help //

🧵Friday night popped into first shul I came across on Golders Green Rd Imrei Shofer for Kabolas Shabbos. Modern-ish non-chasidish shtiebel likes of which barely exist in Stamford Hill these days. The rov himself approached me after davening to ask if I have where to eat. ThankU!
Thankfully, I was at a Bar Mitzvah in lower basement of new R. Bassous shul where there was abundance of good food and fine wine. Must have dug down a mile as 2 floors underground and still v. high ceilings. Mixed feelings on shul from outside though stands out for size and looks
In architecture speak it's not very sympathetic to local surroundings but then walking around Golders Green streets and if any sympathy is aroused it's for the local taste, or, and again in architectural speak, the local 'vernacular' such as front balcony with no means of access

For some Stamford Hill think, read on: This guy, let's call him Boruch Yitzchok Grunfeld (apologies if you carry that name, it's not you), meets me and says he heard my droshe and fine, but "What do you have out of it?" He tried putting himself in my position and asked himself...
"What has Boruch Yitzchok Grunfeld got to do with Chaim Halpern? What difference can I make to this?" Now arguments take time plus it's far more difficult to persuade someone whose mode of thinking is on a totally different plane. I said, rather than answer let me challenge the q
I should say he's a decent guy, set up a local charity which he runs, isn't of the type who thinks that abuse allegations are too easily made up, that women make poor witnesses or that too much fuss is made of abuse (such people do exist) though he does still think Stamford Hill

🧵Switching from coffee & cake abroad to the far more pressing issue at home of Chaim Halpern in the news again. You'd be right wondering, is this for real? Can it really be that this guy with all the rumours and reports swirling about him is still having women "sent" to him?
Small explainer on the term "sent". Round here girls and women especially, but boys and young guys too, who have "problems", which can be anything from theological to psychosexual, are "sent" to local fixers. Referrals are for experts and specialists,
... but mental health issues or questions of faith affect family honour, matchmaking prospects and increased chance of leaving the fold which to some can feel akin to a death warrant. So local "experts" get involved rather than, usually outsider, trained qualified specialists.

As the world makes a cheshbon hanefesh whether to leave twitter or stay I might as well join in the fun, maybe even to wipe my tweets with my tears in the manner of tzadikim. I came to twitter not to "join the conversation" or change the world but simply to retain my sanity
In a community where divergence equals sin and conformity is what you strive for, twitter permits me to be myself. To speak my thoughts, vent my anger, crack my jokes and ventilate my heresies. You think my anger is sad, my jokes suck, my heresies, well, heresy? That's fine.
I'm not here for validation or approval but for life itself. You out there who dare not change the colour of your dustbin-liner rain me'il with arm reflectors which you wear only because some unnamed higher authority dictated that in this instance a reflector and hood are kosher

What many of the Charedi reactions to Walder's suicide show is a fundamental immaturity, low EI, if not an absence of empathy. Let's set aside our North Korean press and their silence on the terrible accusations against Walder - one website spoke of him as an "educator" no less
We can also safely ignore the conspiracy theorists who've generally been working overtime of late so another conspiracy is no big deal. I'm not even referring to the innocent until guilty brigade as if Walder had been incarcerated or worse for crimes he hadn't been convicted of
He was accused of heinous crimes over decades in a position of trust while all the time he was preaching morals and the superiority of our way of life. So his books were suspended till he cleared his name. How terrible is that? The Charedi world bans books for far lesser "crimes"

1. Rav Chaim Wosner who passed away today of covid at 83 was born in 1938 in Bratislava (Pressburg). His parents left for Israel when he was a few months old and hoped to arrange for him to follow but then war broke out. He was reunited with his parent only several years later
2. Reb Chaim served as Rov of Satmar here in London from 1991(2?) for about 18 years. He wasn't too popular in Satmar itself where he was considered aloof, inflexible and too preoccupied with communal affairs. However he was hugely respected in the wider Stamford Hill community.
3. From about 2000 when the previous Rav Padwa passed away, Rav Wosner was in a sense the de facto town rov. Besides having far more experience, he was everything that the current Rav Padwa was not. Articulate, statesmanlike, measured and sharp.
