There’s an increasing amount of articles in Western media speculating about Russia’s collapse and disintegration. Having contributed to this trend myself, I think some points are worth clarifying.
First, collapse and disintegration are not necessarily the same thing. I’ve written about collapse, meaning collapse of the current regime and (perhaps) system, but this does not need to lead to Russia disintegrating into pieces – although it may.
Second, post-imperial Russia to some (incl. myself) means Russia that no longer seeks to dominate its neighbours. To others it means also disintegration of the Russian Federation, with colonised minorities establishing their own states. Again, one may lead to the other - or not.
Third, should the West actively promote regime collapse, regime change or even disintegration of Russia? I’d say the Western focus has to be on defeating Russia in Ukraine and denying it the right to a sphere of influence.
What kind of system will emerge in Russia consequently is something the Russians need to figure out themselves. Western ability to influence Russia’s domestic developments is very limited.
One of the achievements of the whole debate is that Western public is becoming aware of Russia’s colonial practices, which are just as deplorable and brutal as colonial practices of some Western countries used to be. The difference is that Russian colonialism continues.
Some commentators are enthusiastic about the prospect of Russia’s collapse and/or disintegration, others are fearful. I think it’s better to avoid being either. Certainly there are risks involved in Russia’s collapse, but
we should be far more afraid of Russia’s victory in Ukraine and the devastating consequences it would have for European security at large than Russia’s defeat and possible subsequent regime collapse.
One can no longer say that very few are predicting Russia’s disintegration – as was the case with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In fact, there are so many people predicting it that it has become kind of trendy. But whether it is likely to happen is another matter.
What is more likely is Ukraine’s victory, which would lead to collapse of Putin’s regime. This is increasingly seen as a real possibility in the West, provided that military aid to Ukraine is further stepped up.
The West must not constrain its support to Ukraine out of fear of Russia’s collapse. END

End of 2022, 10 months of Russia’s cruel war against Ukraine.
Thinking about what has changed for Europe, I’d highlight that Ukraine has become one of the great nations of Europe. Never before has it been regarded as such.🧶
This will profoundly change the (geo)political map and balance of power in Europe for decades to come, no matter when and how exactly the war will end. Ukraine will prevail and will be shaping tomorrow’s Europe.
Ukraine’s future and its justified expectations towards the EU and NATO are creating a lot of concern in Western Europe. I wish Ukraine would be seen more as a source of inspiration, hope and strength. Europe has a strong interest in Ukraine’s victory, speedy reconstruction and

Thanks for the thread @LianaFix
Let me add some reflections of mine.
I used to have respect for Merkel, though I was critical of some of her policies (energy, esp Nordstream; excessive belief in talking to Putin) and failures to deliver (German military, support to 🇺🇦)
Just imagine if Putin had annexed Crimea while Schröder was in power – there would have been no EU sanctions, no common European/transatlantic condemnation.
Remember how different the European and German debate was in 2014,
the Russian narrative on Crimea and Donbass was creating lots of confusion and was given by many the benefit of the doubt. Merkel pulled Germany and EU together, also with US, to condemn Russia's actions and impose sanctions - for sure, in Eastern member states we expected more

8 months since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s ability to wage conventional war keeps weakening. Russia’s defeat is slowly, painfully coming closer.
It's crucial - and increasingly costly - to step up Western support.
Some reflections 1/
The price of the war for Western countries is becoming painful for large parts of citizens, and it will get worse as winter approaches.
Putin is betting on the use of energy as a tool to break Ukraine and its Western supporters. 2/
In recent weeks I’ve heard and read about the need for negotiations and ceasefire from very different sources.
Once again: a ceasefire would allow Russia to rebuild its forces and soon continue with its efforts to destroy Ukraine’s statehood and rebuild its empire. 3/

As an Estonian, I can very well understand the bitterness of Ukrainians over the collection of Nobel peace prize winners.
Western countries reproduce the group identity that has been violently imposed by Russia. 1/
Being labelled and framed as part of a group of countries from which you are making every effort to break away and from which you objectively differ is something the Baltic states have experienced in abundance. 2/
Ukraine is a European democracy with a strong civil society. Ukrainians are dying for their freedom and democracy, and ours.
I wish the same could one day be said about Russia but I'm not holding my breath. 3/3

Lots of speculations, fears and hopes circulating about post-Putin Russia – no one knows when it will come and how, but it is indeed time to think about possible future scenarios. Some reflections.🧶/1
Putin’s fall would in itself be an important signal to the intl. community that the kind of war of aggression that he undertook against 🇺🇦 does not pay off.
Yet don’t expect 🇷🇺imperialism and chauvinism (i.e. belief in the superiority of Russians over other nations) to die. /2
Russia has been an empire since the 16th century, expanding up to WWI as Tsarist Russia, then contracting as it transformed into Soviet empire, and expanding again during WWII.
Collapse of the Soviet Union was the first stage of disintegration of the Soviet empire. /3

Starting from tomorrow, the Baltic states and Poland will close their border to Russian tourists. The only land border for Russian tourists to enter the EU will be Finnish border.
Finland’s refusal to join the Baltic-Polish approach has sparked heated discussion in Finland. /1
Some observations in English, following my own participation in the debate in Finnish, arguing for tourism ban.
First, I’ve been amazed that a vast majority of Finns commenting the issue in social media + private discussions call for a tourist ban similar to Estonia et al. /2
I’ve been commenting controversial topics (usually related to Russia) in the Finnish media many times. Never before have I received such an enormous amount of comments supporting my view (thousands), while only less than 10 arguing against and defending the Finnish government. /3
