VIDEO THREAD: Protesters calling for the closure of #Guantanamo Bay rallied outside the White House Wednesday, the 21-year anniversary of its operations.
@HerbGeraghty said of 35 men still detained by the government, most have never been charged and many are cleared for release.
One speaker described that the demand is not just to close Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, but abolish it.
She references the Biden administration proposal last year to begin sending Haitian migrants to Guantánamo Bay.
The protesters marched to the offices of @washingtonpost, which they hoped to enter.
They say WaPo has given insufficient coverage to the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, but MPD and building security prevented them from going inside.
One activist spoke to @N2Sreports contributor @T_Jones_Media describing how Washington Post has "done insufficient and minimal coverage of the continuing" operation of Guantanamo, despite Obama and Biden promising to close it.
It is worth noting that the Biden administration has signaled its ardent support for indefinite detention, tapping Merrick Garland for AG.
As a judge, Merrick Garland ruled plainly that Gitmo detainees should not be entitled to due process.
January 6 defendant supporters rallied tonight - the 2 year anniversary - outside the DC jail in support of those detained inside.
Inmates flickered lights as they sang the National Anthem.
A defendant on the phone from inside declared "Happy Patriot's Day!" as they finished.
Defendant Shane Jenkins called into the rally outside the DC jail, describing J6 as "an entrapment."
Describing Trump as the "real and rightful president of the United States," he says that "we're gonna be the ones that were proven to have been right the entire time."
J6 defendant Jonathan Mellis performed a DJ bit calling into the rally:
"Good evening, DC Gulag!" he said. "Welcome to the second annual January 6 curfew breakers extravaganza!"
I won't highlight every call individually, but you can hear them all here:
VIDEO: Today while holding a second anniversary march for January 6 around the Capitol, Micki Witthoeft, the mother of Ashli Babbitt, was arrested by Capitol Police Lieutenant Ryan Schauf for refusing to move to the sidewalk.
THREAD on scope of January 6 Committee's investigation:
In March of 2022, the committee attempted to subpoena Texas man Eric Braden to testify.
Braden did not attend J6 in DC, but engaged in armed activism in the months before and after in Texas and Georgia.
In research for an upcoming book project, I interviewed Eric Braden at his home a few months back.
He played for me a March, 2022 message from the United States Marshals Service attempting to serve him the January 6 Committee's subpoena.
Eric Braden told me he hired attorney John Pierce (who is representing a myriad of January 6 defendants) in response to the committee's March 2022 subpoena for documents and testimony.
BIG VIDEO THREAD: A coalition of right wing groups today protested outside the Jackson Heights Public Library in NYC as a "Drag Story Hour" took place inside.
"Groomers!" yelled the Proud Boys.
"Shut it down!"
"Bless your heart" chanted counter-protesters supporting the event.
Police largely kept the two sides separate on opposite sidewalks, but physically clashed with the side supporting the library Drag Story Event.
Ray Epps, the former Oath Keeper who infamously told crowds "we need to go INTO the Capitol" and was accused of being a "fed" the night before January 6 told the J6 Committee he was trying to "prevent" violence ad believed the Capitol would actually be open to the public.
Ray Epps, who was captured in footage by @ElijahSchaffer at the very first breach of the United States Capitol grounds, claimed to the January 6 Committee that he "wasn't aware" violence was used to enter the Capitol until later on.
CONTEXT THREAD: So far, I've found one direct citation of my @N2Sreports team's work in the January 6 Committee report, and two indirect citations (where they cite a source who cited us).
Below I'm going to point those out and add context to them.
Page 659 of the J6 report (citation 239) describes footage by @N2Sreports contributor @T_Jones_Media.
I have fast forwarded it to the moment described (brick throwing) if you click the link.
The J6 Committee's description of that moment is accurate, but I'd add: the door described went nearly unguarded earlier.
This tweet shows same video of a single cop at the door only verbally discouraging people streaming in.
