Alternatively, vertical strike location tells a lot.
Higher strikes on the face tend to signify fatter shots.
Lower strikes on the face are thin for the majority of players (for some really poor players they can still hit it fat and low on the face).

Another drill would be to get into a bunker, perhaps with some foam balls.
Draw a line in the sand and use that as feedback
Now you have your feedback, work on exploring.
Take the ball away and try to hit farther in front of the desired spot. Then farther behind.
You may be surprise to find that you strike it better when you think “farther in front”
Next step would then be to calibrate your desired strike using the feels generated in the exploratory phase.
Changing depth also changes ground contact location
Deeper = ground contact more back
Shallower = ground contact more forwards

Great question. Read more of this thread to learn a couple of ways I've found to be effective.
You could obviously play around with a technical move that relates to face position.
For example, more lead wrist supination at the bottom (think closing the face down via lead wrist roll) vs less (think holding off the rotation of the forearm).
Or you could go with a more external focus - just thinking about what the clubhead is doing through impact and doing lots of impact rehearsals, then hitting with that feel.
