We’ve just wrapped up a week of historic senior-leader engagements for the U.S.-Japan Alliance — from the Pentagon to the State Department to the White House.

One thing is clear: The Alliance is already stronger than it’s ever been, and it’s getting even stronger. ImageImageImageImage
On Wednesday, @SecDef Austin joined @SecBlinken and their Japanese counterparts for a meeting of the U.S.-Japan Security Consultative Committee – the 2+2 – and advanced key bilateral initiatives to build a more capable, integrated, and agile Alliance. defense.gov/News/Releases/…
The results from Wednesday’s meeting underscore that the U.S.-Japan Alliance stands at a pivotal moment. Here are just a few examples:
1⃣ The Ministers announced the stationing of a Marine Littoral Regiment – the Marine Corps’ most advanced formation with advanced intel, surveillance, and reconnaissance, anti-ship, and transportation capabilities – by 2025. cnn.com/2023/01/11/pol…
2⃣ The Ministers welcomed Japan’s updated national strategy documents – which @SecDef described in December as reflecting “Japan's staunch commitment to upholding the international rules-based order and a free and open Indo-Pacific.” His full statement: defense.gov/News/Releases/…
3⃣ Our leaders expressed their strong support of Japan’s decision to increase defense spending and acquire counterstrike capabilities, which will be vital to modernizing the Alliance and enhancing regional security and stability.
4⃣ The Ministers also resolved to jointly strengthen Alliance activities with allies and partners within and beyond the region, including Australia, the Republic of Korea – yet another example of why it matters when our friends deepen their cooperation.
These initiatives demonstrate significant progress in the U.S.-Japan Alliance, and the Ministers resolved to advance even more – you can learn about them all by exploring a new fact sheet from the @DeptofDefense: defense.gov/News/Releases/…
On Thursday, @SecDef Austin and @ModJapan_en Minister Hamada met at the Pentagon to reaffirm these steps and sign two new defense cooperation arrangements in R&D and supply-chain security. defense.gov/News/News-Stor…
These arrangements are a big deal for increasing U.S.-Japan collaboration on researching and developing advanced technologies, as well as strengthening cooperation between our defense supply chains. defense.gov/News/Releases/… Image
And today, @POTUS welcomed @kishida230 to the @WhiteHouse at a time of important and deepening strategic alignment between the United States and Japan when it comes to upholding the rules-based international order and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The U.S.-Japan Alliance is the cornerstone of peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific – and we’re taking concrete steps together to make our Alliance even stronger and more capable. Image
