my job requires me to use a two-factor authentication app called Duo
i asked my supervisor “what if i didn’t own a smartphone?”
the reply?
“we’d expect you to get one after your first paycheck”
my grad school? requires two-factor authentication via SMS (text message) to access the online student portal, which is required for all courses, online or in-person, because that is where assignments are posted and submitted
i am painfully aware of how smartphones are manufactured
my father is from Kenya. i know well about the exploitation of the African continent and my people
i know about the sweatshop slave labor used in China to produce a smartphone
but this is why the aphorism “there is no ethical consumption under capitalism” exists
not as an excuse to avoid accountability for our decisions, but in acknowledgement of the fact that participation in capitalism is coerced, and even necessities are extracted from exploitation
i pursue harm reduction as praxis
i don’t shop at Walmart. i tend to buy certain electronics used (such as my recent laptop purchase) for both environmental and human rights reasons
i tend to shop local to minimize participation in corporate supply chains
am i perfect? hardly
but do i at least make an effort to reduce the harm i cause through my participation in capitalism rather than being passive about how my choices affect others? absolutely
and that’s why your “but you have a smartphone!” replies mean nothing
y’all act as though people shouldn’t try to improve society even a little unless their choices solve every social injustice
that’s both unrealistic, and vile
the unwillingness to try to solve small problems because there are bigger problems, is unequivocally selfish
like, imagine saying “you shouldn’t buy an electric or hybrid car to reduce carbon emissions, and reduce global dependence on oil, because cars are made from minerals extracted from mines from slaves
might as well keep driving gasoline cars”
that’s how dumb you assholes sound
so yeah, i do have a smartphone, but guess what?
a smartphone is a modern necessity for work and school. Hogwarts Legacy is a video game: it’s a luxury, not something you need to participate in society
if you don’t see the difference, you’re not as good a person as you think

every time men see women complimenting each other in ways men don’t for each other, they think it’s “unfair”
but what’s unfair is expecting women to do for men something men should do for themselves
it’s not women’s responsibility to fill the emotional deficits of male culture
and where i see trans men in this discourse is more or less the subjects of culture shock
many trans men grew up in female social spaces, so to from that social paradigm to the masculine social paradigm is probably as isolating as it is jarring for them
what’s even more frustrating is that the push to get members of the LGBTQ+ community to stop using the word queer, has been led by homophobic and transphobic straight people attempting to co-opt community discourse to make it easier to exclude people from the community
the whole “LGB without the QT” narrative has been pushed by anti-LGBT hate groups such as the LGB Alliance in the hopes of causing community collapse
and some of you are so goofy that you play right into the propaganda, serving our enemies as useful idiots
like, i understand that early transition is a struggle: we all get that urge to compare ourselves to other trans women who are farther along in their transition or have had gender affirming procedures
but other trans women’s transition progress isn’t some offense against you
and yes, it is absolutely unfair that society treats people differently based on appearance, and pretty privilege is very much a thing
but it’s not any given trans woman’s fault that she passes and you don’t
the way cis people mythologize who a trans woman was before she transitioned is gross
“i miss the old you”
what did you miss about the old me exactly? the depression, the toxic coping skills, or my rapidly declining physical health caused by the other two problems?
regarding the “there are trans girls who never crossdressed before starting hrt?” discourse
i feel it’s important to reframe how we think about crossdressing
at its core, crossdressing is gender exploration and expansion, and there are many ways to “crossdress” without clothes
“how can you crossdress if you don’t actually do the dress part??”
easily, in a modern world
perhaps the most useful example of modern crossdressing without actual clothes is video games with female characters or create-a-character options (e.g., The Sims, World of Warcraft)
a study from 2014 found that one in three male gamers played as female characters when given the opportunity, but the more interesting revelation was that male gamers who did this didn’t stop at aesthetic
they changed their behavior to role-play traditionally feminine qualities
i’m an ardent supporter of drag a queer performance art, and as a modality of expression that allows cis gay men to explore their femininity within the context of manhood rather than the context of womanhood
but Drag Race as a show is deeply problematic
Drag Race is often heralded as queer representation, and to some extent it is, but when it is so clearly framed to serve the interest cishetero consumption, its value as queer representation is diminished
