Last week, after relentless advocacy by @MomsDemand volunteers in IL, @GovPritzker signed the #ProtectIllinoisCommunitiesAct into law—a critical gun safety package. But, this win didn't happen overnight. It's the result of years of tireless dedication by our Illinois volunteers🧵
In 2018, @MomsDemand volunteers showed up (more than 500 strong) to the Illinois state house and successfully advocated for the Gun Dealer Licensing Act, SB 1657
Despite polling showing broad support for the bill, then-Gov Rauner vetoed the bill. But that didn’t stop @MomsDemand volunteers… politico.com/newsletters/il…
As we always say, “Do the right thing and we’ll have your back, do the wrong thing and we’ll have your job.” So @MomsDemand turned around got to work getting out the vote for gun sense candidate @GovPritzker, who handily defeated Rauner.
And Illinois @MomsDemand volunteers have supported life-saving legislation that will make Illinois communities safer, such as stronger FOID requirements
Ultimately, Illinois @MomsDemand volunteers have worked with gun safety allies to pass stronger gun laws in the state, including: Gun Dealer Licensing, a Red Flag law, FOID reform, and School Safety Drill reform.
Illinois @MomsDemand volunteers also successfully advocated for #HB4729 (sponsored by former volunteer, @RepMaura!), a law that will see the state develop and implement a comprehensive 2-year statewide secure gun storage public awareness campaign.
Illinois @MomsDemand volunteers have proven themselves to be political powerhouses over and over, and in November 16 of our volunteers ran for and won elected office - 10 of whom will represent Illinois in the state legislature this coming session. #twillmomsdemandaction.org/victory-for-gu…
.@MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers will help Illinois continue to lead the way in keeping its citizens safe – and our playbook of turning volunteers into lawmakers will continue to pay lifesaving dividends across the country. #MomsAreEverywhere
OF FUCKING COURSE: The Utah man who fatally shot his wife, her mother and their five kids had been investigated two years prior for child abuse, but local police and prosecutors decided not to criminally charge him. apnews.com/article/crime-…
Had Utah police pressed charges and had the man been convicted of felony domestic abuse, he would have been prohibited from owning guns and the guns he owned could have been confiscated. Instead, he used his guns to kill his family.
An obituary published in the St. George Spectrum described Michael Haight in glowing terms as an Eagle Scout, businessman and loving father. The obituary made no mention of the killings and was taken offline after backlash.
Right. This is a private story about a domestic abuser with easy access to guns in a family of gun extremists now making excuses for the murders of women and children. We should respect their privacy and not discuss the fact that violence against women is a public health crisis.
Definitely don’t say that the presence of a firearm in the home during a domestic violence incident increases the risk of death fivefold, and that more than 50% of all intimate partner-related murders of women were committed with a firearm.
We shouldn’t acknowledge that weak gun laws increase the number of violent crimes committed against women, and that states like Utah with lax gun laws experience some of the highest rates of firearm homicide against women.
Obituary for the Utah man who fatally shot his five children, mother-in-law and estranged wife: “Michael made it a point to spend quality time with each and every one of his children. Michael enjoyed making memories with the family.” mortuary.org/obituaries/mic…
And if that’s not gross enough, the wife’s family put out a statement supporting … guns: “This is the type of loss that will continue to occur in families, communities and this nation when protective arms are no longer accessible.” eastidahonews.com/2023/01/read-e…
“It is our desire that the media turn their attention to … the great works of God that can render a forgiving heart, how religion can heal and enlarge our capacity for love, and a return to foundational principles of peace within our nation.”
NEW: As the gun industry gets ready to party in Vegas at the NSSF’s #SHOTShow2023 - where thousands of gun makers, sellers, and media gather to celebrate sales and show off new products - @Everytown has just released a new report on the NSSF 🧵 everytownresearch.org/report/the-gun…
One of the biggest draws? Deadly assault weapons like the one used in the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. But that won't stop @NSSFSHOTShow - a few months later, just 2 miles down the Strip, they went on with the show, as they did after Newtown, Parkland and more.ktnv.com/news/las-vegas…
Open only to industry insiders, SHOT is put on by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (@NSSF), the gun industry’s trade association, which actually now spends more money on federal lobbying against gun safety than the NRA does.
After starting @MomsDemand and serving as a full-time volunteer for a decade, I’m stepping back from my leadership role at the end of 2023. It's been the honor of a lifetime to lead this organization and fight for gun safety while empowering women to lead.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/…
Founders play an important - but finite - role in movements. We create a space to gather, but it’s the people who fill it who make the difference. And that’s the amazing @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers and gun violence survivors I've worked with for so many years.
It was important to me to step back so that others can step forward. I’ve always said this is a marathon, not a sprint. But the reality is, it’s also a relay race. And the time has come for me to pass the baton to other leaders in our organization and movement.
