“It's my entire belief that when the activists truly understand what this technology can do, they will be handcuffing themselves to corporate headquarters demanding that companies use blockchain to do their primary recording.” — @dave__ford

“The one thing we know about blockchains is that they have a global reach, and they make things transparent to all and that is the core technological innovation that makes these markets suddenly unified and uniform.” — @el33th4xor

“Voluntary carbon markets are made up of 99.8% of nature-based solutions, which of course we need. But really, in order to have an impact as it relates to climate, you have to get new removals. And you got to get new removals on-chain.”— @BZBronfman

“This technology is the ability to create a democratic playing field for additional services on top of raw data or on top of virtual tokenized assets that one can use.” — @el33th4xor

He'll dive deeper into this at #Consensus2023.

“The thing that we need to do today is get ... those trustworthy tokens online so people can trade them with some assurance that they actually represent some good for the environment. That I think is the biggest challenge ahead.” — @el33th4xor

“The crucial element for interoperability is how do you relate that offset to whatever claims you're making about the real world and use that to give people a high degree of confidence? And that's really where some of these crucial interoperability questions enter in.” — @rransil

“Companies tend to report on all of their sustainability targets once a year. And if you only report once a year, right firstly, that data is not generally machine-readable, which is a huge problem." — @rransil

”Carbon offset markets especially have been marred by unverifiable claims by carbon offsets that are not quite real. And so, that itself is a cause for concern.” — @el33th4xor, a @consensus2023 speaker

“As consumers, we need to hold [policymakers] accountable. Once we've got this transparency [and] we understand what their footprint looks like, we've got to hold them accountable to achieving whatever good is or whatever best practices." — @W_Alasdair
twitter.com/i/spaces/1Yqxo…
"By introducing new technologies and allowing people to ... separate companies that are really making good on their sustainability commitments from ones that aren't, that's going to really allow [and] give companies that are transparent an edge in getting investment.” — @rransil
“The time is now and the realization is that all of these different chains have to come together and work together. And that climate is the place that we can do it and the place that we have to do it.” — @dave__ford

We’re excited to introduce you to Consensus Magazine.

Starting today, we’re rebranding Layer 2 by CoinDesk to align our flagship magazine more closely with our annual festival as we frame the conversation on the industry’s future. 🧵

Each December since 2014, we've taken stock of the year to find the themes, stories and people that made an impact on crypto, blockchain and Web3.

And 2022 has been like no other year.

Welcome to #MostInfluential2022, presented by @Bitstamp: coindesk.com/mostinfluentia… Image
To be clear, this is a list, not a ranking.

Some of our influencers had an outsize impact this year, and more prominence on the list. Many of our influencers are bad actors (but influential nonetheless).

“Of these 10,000 crypto tokens ... I believe that the vast majority are securities,” @SECGov Chair @GaryGensler told a U.S. Senate panel on Thursday, repeating a pro-oversight stance in the wake of @Ethereum’s transition to just such a method.

Testimony got heated on Capitol Hill today.

@SECGov chair @GaryGensler says “there are many factors“ for crypto to qualify as a security.

“It’s not about the token being on a thousand computers, it’s like a group of developers in the middle.”

What do Cashio’s @0xghostchain, Sunny Aggregator’s @SuryaKhosla and 9 other anon devs have in common?

They’re all @simplyianm — and they helped him pump TVL on the Saber protocol and Solana last year.

@realdannynelson and @0x_bae investigate: bit.ly/3zZwbYO
Coding as 11 purportedly independent developers, a 20-something computer wiz from Texas created a vast web of interlocking DeFi protocols that projected billions of dollars of double-counted value onto the Saber ecosystem. bit.ly/3zZwbYO
.@simplyianm’s activity temporarily inflated the total value locked on Solana.

The ploy worked for a while. By his count, Saber and Sunny comprised $7.5 billion of Solana’s $10.5 billion TVL at their peak. bit.ly/3zZwbYO

DeFi attackers strike again — siphoning nearly $200 million from the cross-chain crypto bridge @nomadxyz_.

It's suspected that an update to one of the smart contracts that allow Nomad to send and receive tokens across different blockchains is to blame. bit.ly/3OMzxCw Image
Inter-blockchain communication is key to addressing scaling challenges, @davidzmorris wrote back in February. But bridges and other connections between blockchains present inherent security challenges.
coindesk.com/layer2/2022/02…
If you want to move tokens from one blockchain to another, you’ll likely need a blockchain bridge to allow those assets to travel.

Still confused? We explain how they work: coindesk.com/learn/what-are…
