Socialist councilwoman Kshama Sawant won't run for re-election. There's a reason for it and it's not that she doesn't have a fringe base for support -- she does.
She's not running because she's become wholly ineffective on the council. Few like her. She's toxic. /1
When she was first elected, she undoubtedly had legislative accomplishments like #15Now, which then-mayor Ed Murray tried to steal credit for. But that was Sawant.
She used to speak to all media outlets (I did a couple dozen interviews with her) and be more proactive. /2
But she grew angrier and more isolated due, I think, the recall efforts against her. She BARELY scraped by the last recall challenge. People were growing weary of her nasty and divisive rhetoric. /3
But most importantly: her council colleagues, who are almost all as extreme as she is on most issues, didn't want anything to do with her. She was always so brand focused, which irked many in City Hall. But she was also just rude and unpleasant to be around. /4
That's part of the reason why she's been less effective: she has no allies on the Council. And the media hasn't covered her much because reporters grew tired of her lazy "corporate media" attacks and her office generally doesn't respond to many requests anyway. /5
Now she'll lead some activist movement to be the thorn in the side of Democrats. Good. This will likely mean moderate candidates will have a chance of getting into the race because Sawant will start pushing the crazy to run for council seats. It'll alienate most voters. /6
There are a ton of crazies concentrated in only two districts. It's why running a crazy against more moderate Alex Pedersen failed.
She's still a threat in that her cult will be motivated and active, so you can't count her out. But it gives a path for smart moderates to take. /7
In the end, Sawant ran her course. She changed Seattle for the worse, so I'm happy to see her go. Now we just have to make sure she (and other councilmembers who are calling it quits), aren't replaced by people as destructive as Sawant. /end
*isn't.

As of this morning, WA voter engagement is far below where it was in 2018 (39% vs 48%).
It's King County/Seattle showing the most dramatic turnout (37% vs 51%), indicating it's Democrats that are sitting this one out in significant numbers.
There's a caveat here: young Seattle voters (Democrats) tend to vote on the day-of the election via dropbox, so their numbers come in late.
But they usually don't show up in big enough numbers that would match 2018 numbers. Is it possible? Of course. But seems unlikely.
It's also important to note: in WA, Republicans vote day-of, too, in significant numbers. So this will be... interesting.
BREAKING: School shooting in Seattle with, according to a police source, one victim. CPR was being performed. Location is near Ingraham High School, source says it’s on campus.
In Whatcom County? Vote @SimonSefzik and Tawsha Thompson. This is a no brainer.
Know anyone who lives in Bremerton, Ollala, Port Orchard or anywhere on this map? Make sure they vote for @RepJesseYoung for State Senator and Spencer Hutchins & @MichelleCaldier for House in Legislative District 26.
EXCLUSIVE: UW Medicine falsely claimed a study showed gender-inclusive care led to rates of depression plummeting.
I obtained emails showing that staff didn't correct false reporting about the study because it received such positive coverage. mynorthwest.com/3602854/rantz-…
After @jessesingal published "pretty concerning claims" of the study, calling out the false publicity materials, one UW staffer said she wouldn't drive traffic to it with internal promotion. It was that troublesome.
The staff was happy with the positive news coverage that the false claims received. So, they weren't eager to correct it.
One of the study's authors even said she would be fine NOT clarifying the errors at all, if it led to too much attention. /3 mynorthwest.com/3602854/rantz-…
I'm told there was a riot at the notoriously poorly run Echo Glen Children's Center on Saturday night.
A statement is finally forthcoming but, unfortunately, the King County Sheriff's Office is slow-walking any details despite this being a clear news story.
We shouldn't have to wait for a carefully worded statement from Echo Glen to frame the story. They don't get to tell us how to view whatever happened on Saturday night. Was it even a riot?
I asked for the incident report last night, but the sheriff's office won't provide it.
Echo Glen statement is out.
"On Saturday evening at around 9 p.m., five residents at the Chinook building, a 16-person unit at Echo Glen Children’s Center, refused to return to their rooms for evening bed time according to current rules for the facility."
